It all began in the month of June. She had just turned 40.
At first, it started with allergies…
Swollen eyes, dry cough, runny nose, and sinus congestion.
This was the first time she had to visit her family doctor as an adult. She actually had to introduce herself.
(She had come a long way over the years because she was actually very sick as a child.
She spent a LOT of time in hospitals with doctors and specialists.
When she was young, she lost a kidney from illness and was on antibiotics for
over SEVEN years as a result.
We now know this was where it REALLY all started.)
Her new doctor told her it was normal allergy stuff and gave her pills.
When she asked why she’s only starting to get allergies now, he told her that these things ‘just happen’.
(I know now, that these things don’t ‘just happen’.)
So…she continued her normal routine.
She ran 3-5 miles every weekday, and much longer runs on the weekend.
But, by August, the allergy pills weren’t working.
Her symptoms were getting WORSE.
Normal breathing became difficult and she was forced to stop running.
It was time for another trip to her family doctor.
This time he told her she now had asthma and gave her a few different types of inhalers.
When she asked him why, he told her he again that these things ‘happen’.
(I know now that asthma doesn’t ‘just happen).
But the inhalers didn’t help.
