Dr. Martin goes over a study showing that heart and brain health go together. The study shows a direct correlation between cardiovascular disease and cognitive decline. The same things causing heart disease are the same things that cause Alzheimer’s.
In the United States and Canada, the number one killer is heart disease, followed closely by cancer. Alzheimer’s disease is now the number three killer. In the United Kingdom, Alzheimer’s is number one!
It’s metabolic syndrome that connects cardiovascular disease to cognitive decline. Your heart, brain, liver, pancreas… they are all connected… and finally science is agreeing with what Dr. Martin has been saying for years!
Dr. Martin also looks at a study showing that microplastics are being found in the placenta! This shocking study shows that environmental factors like plastics are affecting us more than we realize!
TRANSCRIPT OF TODAY'S EPISODE
Announcer: You're listening to The Doctor Is In Podcast, brought to you by MartinClinic.com. During the episode, the doctors share a lot of information. As awesome as the info may be, it is not intended to diagnose, cure, treat, or prevent any disease. It's strictly for informational purposes.
Dr. Martin: Well, good morning everyone. And welcome again to another Live this morning. Hope you're having a great day. And sure appreciate folks coming on. Okay, let's go through this here, okay? This is an interesting... Heart and brain baby, heart and brain, okay? What do I mean by that? Heart and brain? Because there's a big connection with your heart and your brain. Heart and brain health, they go together. Let me read you this study, the cardiovascular risk. Cardiovascular risks and cognitive decline, okay? Cardiovascular risk and cognitive decline and let me explain this to you, okay? So, what affects your heart? Okay, so we've talked about this many, many a time. So, just remember what has been said over the years here on our Facebook group and into obviously, as we look into our podcast, when... In this study, they talk about the same things that cause heart disease are the same things that cause Alzheimer's.
Now, if you've read the book, The Reset, The Metabolic Reset, it's exactly the point that I made. The connection between your heart, your brain, your liver, your pancreas, they're all connected. And finally science is agreeing with what we've been saying. Guys, this is really, really, really important, okay? So, it's going to go over basics. It will go over basics again, but so important that you understand it and what you do in your 30s, in your 40s, in your 50s... if you want to protect your brain, you need to make changes, especially in the diet and... this study did it, but it's something that we've been saying for a long time. So, guess what guys? Your brain hates sugar. It might be calling for it. I know women that go buy Laura Secords and they want to do a swan dive. They need that sugar fix. Horror-mones, but guys, your brain doesn't do well with sugar. It just does not do well. With sugar. Sugar destroys the brain and more particular, it destroys the heart and the brain. The heart and the brain.
So, let me just go over what this study says, and I will break it down for you. I call it heart and brain, baby. Heart and brain, okay? Okay, this is what they're saying. When you have extra fat on your body, especially in those internal organs. Fat around your organs guys, is an organ in itself. It's an endocrine organ, meaning it's releasing hormones on its own. Fat inside the body, and sometimes you will see it with belly fat, but this is part of what we call metabolic syndrome. So, let's just go over that because that's really important. And you'll see that it has everything to do with food. Cognitive decline.
Remember what we've been saying? It's flabbergasting. Can I use that old word? Flabbergasting, that in North America, the number three killer, in Canada and the United States, the number three killer, okay? Heart disease is still number one. Cancer's number two, close, close, close together. And number three is Alzheimer's. Number three is Alzheimer's, unbelievable. In the United Kingdom, Alzheimer's is the number one killer. Again, incredible, incredible. Well, let's tie this together. If you have metabolic syndrome, according to this study, meaning that metabolic syndrome, let me just say it for you again, what is metabolic syndrome? And according to the CDC, according to studies done in 2018, this was a Game Changer Studies guys, a Game Changer Studies that came out and said that 88% of the population in North America is metabolically unwell. They have three to five of the symptoms or the testing for metabolic syndrome. 88%, it's craziness. Only 12% of the population, according to the CDC, is healthy, metabolically.
What is metabolic syndrome? Elevated blood pressure, okay? And we already know that in North America, well over 50% have elevated blood pressure. Elevated blood sugar, now I'm not talking about diabetes, guys, I'm talking about in the upper end of blood sugar. And I sent a chart last week and we can post it again if you want, on the private Facebook group, just showing you what numbers are even in that high-end for blood sugar.
"Oh, and Dr. Martin, my blood sugar is normal." No, it's not. You haven't been labeled a diabetic, but if your blood sugar is even in the upper end, you're in do-do. You need to fix it because this study is saying, and it's a cohort study meaning they looked at all the other studies and realized that metabolic syndrome connects the brain and the heart. And the thing is that really, what the study is saying is that if you don't take care of that, you are on your way to cognitive decline. Who wants to lose their brain? So, blood pressure, I say this a thousand times. Blood pressure is your body screaming at you. If your blood pressure's high, screaming, "Hello, you there. This is a symptom of insulin resistance."
Because remember, metabolic syndrome is insulin resistance. Metabolic syndrome is insulin resistant. It's food, blood pressure, blood sugar. Again, can be within the normal ranges, but in the high normals, not good. Belly fat, visceral fat, fat that you can... You can be skinny and have lots of fat in your liver and around your organs, and you don't even know it. You don't even know it. You have to look at the other factors if you're skinny. What is your triglyceride? Okay, metabolic syndrome. Here we come back to it. These are actual tests that'll tell you if you have metabolic syndrome, okay? Blood pressure, blood sugar, triglycerides. I look at that every day, I look at numbers, numbers, numbers, triglycerides, and ladies, you better have lower triglycerides than your husband, okay?
I like it under one for women. 100. Under 100 in the US of A. Men, about 125, and certainly no higher than 150 for a man. But triglycerides, remember triglycerides are made in the liver. Three fat balls made in the liver. When the liver, the suitcases folded, sends triglycerides into the bloodstream, very dangerous if they're high, especially because their partner is HDL, okay? HDL. So, if your triglycerides are high, your HDL will be low. They go together. Teeter-totter. I've taught you that. Triglycerides come from food. They come from sugars, not fat, not cholesterol, "Oh, Dr. Martin, I don't know if I should have too many... How many eggs can I eat in a week?" How about a hundred? It doesn't matter how many eggs you eat in a week. They're good for you. "How many steaks can I have in a week?" I don't care. 20? "How much cheese can I have?" I don't care about that either. It's just good for you. You got it?
But triglycerides are made from crappy carbohydrates, sugars, and remember carbs. Carbs are just long chains of sugar. They're going to be sugar, okay? So, just understand that. And this study is saying, if your triglycerides are high, your HDL will be low. They go together. They're the opposite of each other. Remember you want to have high HDL. Why do you want to have high HDL? High cholesterol? Why do you want to have high cholesterol? Because HDL will take your triglycerides out of your bloodstream. HDL will take triglycerides out of your bloodstream, okay? So, fat, HDL, triglycerides, all things you can look for, metabolic syndrome. And then there's another one that I've mentioned many a time... and that is Uric Acid.
I believe it is a biomarker for metabolic syndrome. But remember I've told you this again, you're not always going to see this because people go, "Well, Uric Acid is Gout." Yes and no, guys, okay? Uric Acid and Gout, a lot of people, actually, most people that I have high levels of Uric Acid don't get gout at all. They have no symptoms of it. Actually, the only symptom they often see is their blood pressure is up. Look, everybody makes Uric Acid. It is a by-product in your body of fructose. But when you hold on to too much Uric Acid, it's because you have a condition called insulin resistance. Uric Acid is not, "Oh the King, the King got Gout." I heard it on the weekend. Somebody told me that. "Yeah, but I said the King got Gout, not because he was eating red meat because he was drinking too much wine, and too much beer."
Fructose. It's a by-product of fructose. And we talked about this the other day. There got... A fruit, and fruit of course is much better, but it doesn't matter. It's still fructose. And in this day and age, I'm telling you to curtail it. Don't live on fruit. Limit your fruit. Kids, look, you can give them fruit. I'm not saying never have fruit. And kids will do better with fruit, but don't make a living on it. The study has shown, they're pulling these two things together, the heart and brain, because everything I just mentioned will affect your heart. Your triglycerides. It's not cholesterol that causes heart disease. It's not cholesterol that causes heart disease. It's triglyceride, and low cholesterol. Low cholesterol. You want to get your cholesterol up. Now, I know you have to undo 50 years of teaching. You have to undo in your own minds, you have to convince yourself first of all... A lot of you want me to give you stuff, and so you can convince your doctor. And I understand that, I don't want you fighting with your doctor, okay?
They're not keeping up with the reading. They don't take enough nutrition, doctors. And God love them, but I feel sorry for them. They're not trained, they're trained to hammer that cholesterol down, hammer it down, hammer it down. And they're pumped 24 and seven by big pharma, to get cholesterol down. It's taught in the medical schools. It's their training. It's hammer that cholesterol down. Hammer it down. Total cholesterol, total cholesterol, and let me see your LDL. And do I ask you for your LDL? The only thing I want your LDL to be is up. I want cholesterol to be up. You want to die young?
Well, then get your cholesterol down. But again, let's come back to the brain for a minute. Imagine, you see? Your brain, especially the hippocampus, okay? The hippocampus, the memory center of your brain hates sugar. Hates it. It's not good for it. And your brain, look, if you eat sugar, it will take a beeline to your brain. Rapid. Brain is headquarters. It will take 25% of everything you eat. It's like taxes. Right off the top, right? You make a paycheck and your taxes, they're deducted at source, but that's what happens when you eat guys, your brain is headquarters. It says, "Give me 25% and you can keep the rest, okay?" It's like taxes. Of course, most people are even higher than 25%, okay? Wait till COVID is over. Ooh, the taxes, going to be crazy I think.
Anyway, so that's what headquarters does. The brain wants it. But you see the connection? See the connection, the very same things that cause heart disease, high triglycerides, low HDL, right? Increased blood pressure, increased blood sugar. These are all things that cause heart disease. It's the same thing that causes your brain to decline, especially the memory center. Remember, sugar saturates the hippocampus, the cells of the hippocampus. And when you develop insulin resistance, even kids have insulin resistance. It is the scourge of our society today. And what bugs me about the viruses, we're not talking about this. Viruses will come and go, guys. All the emphasis on this, but we're not talking about long-term health. We've been hijacked. Our health system has been hijacked by the public health, nevermind mental health, which is a big tragedy today. But I'm talking about cardiovascular and brain health. It starts when you're young, these things go upside down when you're young because it has everything to do with the diet.
We don't talk about it enough. And I know I'm preaching to the choir this morning. You guys understand this. You guys understand this. It's something you can control. You can control it, okay? So, isn't that an interesting study, that the heart and brain, baby, are connected? Heart and brain, baby. Heart and brain. Really, really interesting. Okay, let me give you another study that came out. I'm going to just change course a little wee bit here this morning. It says evidence of microplastics in the placenta. Wow. Evidence of microplastics in the placenta. Our good friend, Dr. McEwen sent me this study on the placenta. Imagine that. They're finding all, and I've said this many a time. If you're heading off with Elon Musk, to go live maybe on Mars or whatever, but oh boy, you can't avoid it. As a matter of fact, they're showing that these microplastics, these endocrine disruptors are already seen in the placenta.
You know what? Let me just make a couple of points. One, you live on a planet. It's the way it is. They talk about climate change being the big factor in the planet, I say, no, I say it is the environmental factors like plastics. We're not going to get away. I call it the DuPont disease, okay? I've renamed it, DuPont, the chemical company, okay? And I know they're big. They're huge. And look, they did some good things, okay? So, it's like the pharmaceutical industry, okay? We don't want to throw out the baby with the bath water. The greatest discovery in medicine was antibiotics, right? You got to give Louis Pasteur and guys like that, they were scientists, wonderful, beautiful. And the pharmaceutical industry has, it does a lot of great things, including antibiotics that can save people's lives even today. And DuPont, the biggest chemical company in the world, it's done some great things, okay?
Like over a hundred thousand new chemicals in our environment since World War II, a hundred thousand new ones, but there's a double edged sword. Some conveniences, and they're in cosmetics, they're in paints, they're in plastics. The problem is they're forever chemicals. You can't get rid of them. You can't get rid of them. They get in the water. They get in the air. And I'm more concerned guys, about that, than I am about the climate, okay? Let's not have an argument about that. I'm just telling you what I believe is a much bigger danger because what happens? Okay, so think about this for a second here, that in baby, in the placenta, there's these microplastics. They just needed better testing to be able to see it, and better microscopes and they analyze a placenta, and here's all these microplastics. I've said this in the past that these are things that have an effect on baby's brain.
I mentioned in The Metabolic Reset book, that when I was in practice in the 1970s, I can't say that I ever heard about autism until about 1978, when I heard about it for the first time. I didn't even know what it was, honestly. And then we see it so much today. What is it? One out of 39 kids or whatever, and it used to be one out of 10,000 and one of the 20,000. And it's down into... And cognitive problems with kids and their brains. So, what do you do about that? See, that's the key is I want to tell you what to do. Mommy, while you're pregnant, preferably before, you need to take probiotics because probiotics actually help to take away dangerous Xenoestrogens, okay?
Remember, those things look like estrogen and estrogen is a growth hormone, Xenoestrogens, plastics, these things, your body thinks it's estrogen, and that's not good. It's not good. Your body knows how to make estrogen. You don't need any extra, okay? You don't need any extra. Probiotics help to get rid of stuff out of the... When you take a broad spectrum probiotic, that is helpful to get rid of this garbage, in you Mommy, and in the placenta. It's an absolute essential thing to do, okay? And I've talked to you about using DIM and hormonal support, to take these micro plastics out of your body, but you're never going to completely get away from it, guys. You're never going to completely get away from it because you just live in a world where it's everywhere. It's in the air, it's in the water, it's everywhere.
And some good things have become, you know what I mean? The convenience of chemicals, okay? Household cleaners, and ladies, what are they showing? I remember this is quite a few years ago, that they did a test on 400 lipsticks, okay? I didn't know there was 400 different kinds of lipsticks. I've never used any, okay? But apparently, I remember the study because of the number, 400. I said what? 400. And 400 of them had these Xenoestrogens and the lead. What? You're putting lead right on your lips. How crazy is that? Like I said, almost impossible to get away from it. It won't happen, but at least protect yourself and protect your children, as much as you can from the damaging effects. Because again like I said, when you elevate estrogen, I've said this many a time, that there's two things that will make cancer grow, grow, grow, insulin and estrogen. Insulin and estrogen. They're growth hormones.
And then you add stress, cortisol, and that's like adding fuel to the fire. Insulin is food and estrogen, one of the things of estrogen are what we call Xenoestrogens, which are chemicals. The DuPont factor. Okay, I won't call it the DuPont disease, I'll call it the DuPont factor, okay? Remember what I've said, right? Here's another one. It's the Johnson & Johnson factor, okay? Johnson &... I sort of blame some companies, because Johnson & Johnson were at the forefront of yeah, suntan lotion or sunscreen. And when you see people laddering up with sunscreens, those are Xenoestrogen. So, we call it a DuPont factor and Johnson & Johnson factors. And you know where you get a lot of these chemicals are, and guys, I'm just telling you to be careful because I see it all the time, is that people have this idea, remember when they put the virus first, they have no idea.
Every time they squirt, squirt, squirt, and then they use these antibacterial soaps or whatever they're called, and, oh, I can't stand it. And when they spray, spray, spray, you go to Walmart or whatever, and they're always spraying and over cleaning, because they're told the virus, the virus, the virus. I'm more worried down the road, for cancer, cancer, cancer. These are Xenoestrogen. If you're really worried about the virus, carry a spray of oil of oregano, that's the best to be antiviral, okay? Okay. So, I just wanted to bring those two studies. I know I didn't get to all the questions and maybe I'll do that as part of tomorrow. We'll see. Got some other good studies that came out though, but okay.
So, a couple of house cleaning, one, Metabolic Reset Book. What a gift that makes for friends. You really want to show them the way to a healthy body, that's a great gift to give to people. It really is. The gift of information on how to... We talked about, like I said, the cardiovascular risk and the brain, who isn't worried about that today? About your brain health. People are very worried about that. And I show you what to do about that. And the connection between diabetes and cognitive, and diabetes and the heart. And like I said, most people, if you have metabolic syndrome, you are effectively a diabetic and that's 88% of the population, but not you guys. You guys know better. So, okay. So, we'll meet you tomorrow and we'll talk tomorrow. And if you're not part of the Martin clinic Facebook group, make sure you join. We love you guys and talk to you soon.
