538. Health Headlines

Transcript Of Today's Episode

Announcer: You're listening to The Doctor Is In podcast, brought to you by martinclinic.com. During the episode the doctors share a lot of information. As awesome as the info may be, it is not intended to diagnose, cure, treat, or predict any disease. It's strictly for informational purposes.

Dr.Martin: Good morning everyone and welcome to another live this morning. I hope you're having a wonderful day. I'm going to give you the headlines [00:00:30] in health of course that came out this past week, and you'll find them... I think you will, you'll find them very interesting. Some of them I'll pontificate a little bit on and some of them I won't.

Here's one. Periodontitis... Okay, so gum disease, nine times more likely for COVID. Gum disease, [00:01:00] nine times more likely for COVID. That's the headline. The dentists wanted to get in on COVID too. I don't blame them, okay, because oral health has a huge effect too. I remember that this is... Go back 40 years ago, maybe somewhere around there, the first connection between heart disease and [00:01:30] gum disease. They talked about a connection close to 40 years.

What they were saying at the time is when you have a low grade... Like if you've got gum disease you're not going to have a fever, right? I mean you can have an infection in your mouth and have a fever, but most of the times you don't have a fever at all. It's low grade. You don't see what's happening.

There was a connection go back that long between if you have a [00:02:00] problem in your mouth, gum disease, gingivitis, where your gums are got bacteria, your body fights that. It has a response to it, and that response creates a low grade inflammation and you don't even know you have it.

Problem with inflammation, we've talked about this many, many, many a time. Inflammation is on your side until it's [00:02:30] not. Inflammation, if you have a fever, is good for you. You hurt yourself, you want inflammation. Your body is rushing to the site with the... I call it the ambulance system in your blood vessels. Let's say you bang your knee. While the ambulance system comes to the knee it's bringing extra protein, extra enzymes and all these things your body is fearfully and [00:03:00] wonderfully made and it knows what to do.

I always argued a little bit about ice, the treatment with ice, because I said, "I get it. You have inflammation. You want to put ice on it to lower it." Not right away. I always said, "Look, your ambulance is coming. It'll help you to repair." Anyway, that's another subject, whether to use ice or heat. I was more [00:03:30] of a heat guy, because then your body would even produce more enzymes and things that would help to fight the injury.

But we all understand chronic inflammation. A lot of people have said that inflammation is at the root of all diseases. It's not at the root of it, but it is a big factor, because when you have elevated insulin you get inflammation. When you have leaky [00:04:00] gut you get inflammation. When you have oxidative damage, free radical damage, you get inflammation. Over a long period of time that can destroy your blood vessels, and this is why it had that connection. Even 40 years ago they were talking about it, the connection between gum disease and your heart disease, because it damages blood vessels. Inflammation is on your side [00:04:30] till it's not, okay? I think you guys understand that.

This one is saying that periodontitis, or gum disease, puts you nine times more likely to get ill from COVID. What's the connection? It's inflammation. Of course when people get really sick with COVID they have an inflammatory... It's too much. They call it a cytokine storm in their lungs, so it's another [00:05:00] factor.

I talked to you... I can't remember if it was last week or the week before, I don't remember exactly, but I talked about inflammation. Before we get to the other headlines let me just recap a little bit. Chronic inflammation, it's not Houdini. There's a reason for it to come out.

I remember writing about this in a book. Was it Serial Killers, or I think [00:05:30] it was... I'm trying to remember which book I wrote first about inflammation and its effect. I think Medical Crises: Secrets Your Doctor Won't Share With You, I'm pretty sure it was in that one.

Inflammation is a huge factor, because it destroys blood vessels, it will destroy nerves in cancer, in neurological disease, in Alzheimer's, Parkinson's, MS. Again, it's not the root cause, it's not the [00:06:00] root cause, but it's a big factor. In pulmonary diseases, asthma, COPD, bronchitis, hay fever, joints, because you get that with joints, right? Osteoarthritis, osteopenia, sarcopenia, rheumatoid arthritis. You see, let me just give you another study. Again, this would have come out 30 years ago at least.

People who had rheumatoid arthritis were [00:06:30] 50%... This is the headline 30 year ago. People with rheumatoid arthritis had a 50% higher chance of having a heart attack or stroke. What's the connection? What is an autoimmune disease like rheumatoid arthritis have to do with heart disease? It's inflammation that doesn't go away. It destroys [00:07:00] your blood vessels. It can destroy your nerve endings. See, that's the key. So when that study came out I flagged it, talked about it, I wanted to talk to you this morning about it. This is headline Thursday.

Here's another headline. Baby foods have dangerous levels of heavy metals says the FDA. [00:07:30] Most baby foods, dangerous levels of heavy metals. Wow, like mercury, like lead, like cadmium, heavy metals, baby food. Even babies are exposed to environmental factors. They get into baby food. Imagine that.

Babies are like canaries in the coal mine, like their [00:08:00] system... Lead, mercury and that, it's almost impossible not to be exposed to that stuff today. I'm just telling you what it's like to live on this planet. There's almost... Unless you're planning to leave this planet you're going to be exposed to heavy... I used to test for heavy metals in the office. I used to see a lot of it, mercury, lead, cadmium.

I always used to tell people if you keep your liver clean your body [00:08:30] will get rid of that stuff. If you gum it up with crappy carbohydrates and you got fatty liver, guess what that fat does? Fat cells attract heavy metal, and so keep your liver clean guys.

Remember, your liver is a suitcase. You're liver is the Costco parking lot. It gets full very quickly when insulin, the traffic cop, sends [00:09:00] sugars. Can't stay in the bloodstream, out, out, out, out, out, out, out, get over to the liver. Your liver, guys, is such an important organ. There are 600 things that happen in your liver. 600 things happen in your liver, and one of the biggest ones is that it detoxes.

Headline... Here's another one. Study of 21,000 students... I sort of mentioned this a couple of weeks ago, [00:09:30] 15 to 20% of athletes... They studied 21,000 athletes at the college level and 15 to 20% of them met the standard for having a concussion. You know what the problem was? They never had a concussion.

Now again I brought to you a whole podcast on this. They never had a concussion. You know what they had? Stress and the lack of sleep, and [00:10:00] 15 to 20% of them of the 21,000 mimicked symptoms of concussion. You want to know why you have brain fog, guys? Did I ever have a concussion? I got my bell rung... I remember... I might have told you this. While I was playing hockey I come around the net and I did not see this guy coming. I didn't see him. He was a classmate, [00:10:30] but we were on opposite teams.

Man, I wanted to kill him about a day later when I got his license plate. He hit me so hard, I didn't see him. He was waiting for me as I come around the net. I was just picking up some steam with the puck and he hammered me. I remember it was like tweety birds. I went back to the bench and... I probably was concussed, but in those [00:11:00] days... I sat... I think I missed a shift and I was back out there.

But today, of course... You know, I talked to you about the movie Concussion and all that. You guys go watch that if you haven't watched that movie. Watch that. It's all about concussions. It's not about football so much. Remember, it's a good movie. Anyway, I talked to you about that.

But imagine, these athletes never had a concussion. What they did is they weren't sleeping properly and [00:11:30] they were stressed. Who the heck ain't stressed in this day and age? We talked about this last week on the webinar, what cortisol kills. It kills your brain. I first talked about this in chronic fatigue syndrome and fibromyalgia. Brain fog, one of the major problems, and sleep disorder, exhausted but you can't sleep. It's the chicken or the egg. What [00:12:00] comes first? Cortisol. So this is what this study is saying. Isn't that something? Study of 21,000.

Now another one, plant based diets are devoid of... And they were just talking about one element in this study, and very, very crucial, devoid of... Finish the headline, guys. It could be B12. [00:12:30] If you said that I'd give you marks for that because it's very true.

Zinc. Plant based diets reduce zinc. It's a bad idea in the age of COVID. That's the headline. Study after study after study after study, and there will be a hundred more, more than that I promise you. Plants, plants, plants. And listen, God gave us two kingdoms to eat from, [00:13:00] the animal kingdom and the plant kingdom.

Don't avoid the animal kingdom, because if you do you're going to have low levels of zinc. I don't even want you to take a supplement of zinc. You won't hear me talking about it, although you could, but I'm not big on it. I want you to eat your zinc in Vitamin S. Steak, [00:13:30] Mr. Consistent, this study, okay? Plant based diets reduce zinc. Bad idea in the age of COVID.

We talked about what zinc does. Zinc goes inside your cell and boosts its protection of the cell and boosts the immune system, but I would rather you eat [00:14:00] your zinc than take it as a supplement. I mean it. And guess what pushes it inside your cell? Quercetin. And again, you do not have to take a supplement of quercetin, with a Q. Drink it when you have coffee. Coffee takes your steak and drives the zinc inside the cell because coffee is full of [00:14:30] quercetin. Wonderful, isn't it? Wonderful.

I think I have another study. Oh, yes. Oh, yes. Here it is, another study on coffee. Headline, coffee decreases the risk of heart failure. Coffee lovers, coffee reduces the risk of heart failure. Oh, wow. I told you. Only for 46 years I've been telling you about coffee. It's [00:15:00] not acidic. Coffee is not acidic. Go on the internet and it's saying coffee is acidic. No, it's not. Not when you drink it. I guess the bean might be acidic. But don't put sugar in your coffee please. That's what ruins your coffee.

Coffee reduces your risk of heart disease, heart failure. [00:15:30] Love the headlines, don't you? Japanese study, 58,000 men they followed for 14 years. 58,000 men, they followed them for 14 years. There is no association... Okay, here's the headline. No association of consumption of saturated fat and heart disease. The headline [00:16:00] continues the more saturated fat, the less your risk of stroke. Fat don't make you fat. Fat don't give you heart disease. The butter don't give you heart disease, okay?

There's no link between saturated fat and heart disease, and I saw this, okay? I had to write it down, to give you the other [00:16:30] side. Here's in the United Kingdom headline, eating half an egg a day increases your risk of death by 7%. Now one is following these people for 14 years, the other one is just an observance study. They don't tell you what else these people were eating.

Eggs, guys... I mean, look, how in the world could an egg be hard on your heart? Think [00:17:00] of what's in it. Think of the nutrients in an egg. It's not the egg. It's the toast. It's not the egg, I see it all the... Look, the guy is eating bacon and eggs and they had a heart attack. Yeah, but they weren't talking about what else... Did he drink? Did he smoke? Did he have toast with his bacon and eggs? Yeah. Well, you're looking for love in all the wrong places. [00:17:30] Hello. Japanese study, 58,000 people. Eat your eggs, folks. Trust me on this one. Eat your eggs.

Okay, high DHA... Here's the headline, eight times more effective than plant based omega-3 for breast cancer. Ladies, high DHA, [00:18:00] which you get in fish, which you get in steak, eight times more effective than plant based omega-3, which has ALA. You have... In your fish, your steak, what do you have? DHA and EPA. They're long chain fatty acids, DHA being the longest chain. The longer the chain, the more you absorb it.

Plant based omega-3, nothing [00:18:30] wrong with that. ALA, there's nothing wrong with it, but it's not a long chain fatty acid. Your body doesn't absorb it, and this is why I'm always telling you to eat animal products, eggs, meat and cheese, and fish is in meat, okay? Fish is meat guys, and it's better than chicken. I take fish every day in a capsule. I just had it.

[00:19:00] So those were the headlines. Oh, by the way, this is another study out of Japan. I told you about the other one. Let me just read the headline again in Japan. Japanese study, 58,000 men, they looked for 14 years, no association between the consumption of saturated fats, which is in an egg by the way, which is in bacon by the way, which is in steak by the way, saturated fat. [00:19:30] Saturated fat is found in all olive oil too.

Every guru that I've ever met, and I mean this, and a lot of my colleagues, if you ask what is the best oil, I mean there might be a little argument between coconut oil and olive oil, but generally their training would tell them that... They would first go to olive oil, because if you just Google [00:20:00] it you'll see olive oil, olive oil, olive oil, olive oil is so good for you, and I agree. I agree. Olive oil is so good for you.

Extra virgin, cold pressed olive oil, is it good for you? It's fantastic. I have never met any of my colleagues that have said olive oil is no good. As a matter of fact, I bet you they even drink it. They probably [00:20:30] have a couple of tablespoons of it a day.

But in clinical nutrition 101 what's in olive oil? It's a saturated fat that's called oleic acid. Okay. What's in bacon? Oleic acid? That would be right. Same oil. One you eat [00:21:00] and the other one you drink. I'd rather eat it. I mean it. You might as well have protein in the bacon. It's better for you than olive oil. Why? It has oleic acid, but bacon also has protein. Never mind the fat. You get that in olive oil. You want to drink olive oil, go for it. I'm going to back you up. I prefer to eat it. I prefer to eat the oleic [00:21:30] acid in my bacon. Hello. Plus then you get protein, very high protein.

I know, "But Dr. Martin, what about this and... You know, bacon and all, it looks so terrible. Like look at the grease in there, and oh my word, and that can't be good for you." Yes, it is. It's better than olive oil, because olive [00:22:00] oil is not giving you protein. It's giving you fat, and fat don't make you fat. Fat's good for you, so if you want to have a tablespoon or two of olive oil just like that, I like it. Good for you. I prefer bacon myself.

Okay guys, for the next couple of Thursdays we're going to do a [00:22:30] morning session, okay? We're going to do morning sessions, just my schedule. We sure appreciate the feedback on the programs. We appreciate it. It's been tremendous. It's a privilege for me that you would give me your time and I appreciate it.

Tomorrow is Question and Answer Friday, and so I don't think it's too late to get your questions in, and we'll tackle [00:23:00] that tomorrow. That's always a very popular podcast and Facebook. Again, we're always inviting people to join our Martin Clinic Facebook group.

You know what? This is just a little bit of feedback. A lot of people have said to us that that group, if they're doing the reset for 30 days that has given them a confidence first of all, just that feedback from [00:23:30] members in the group telling people, "Look, stick to it." Because some people, they're carboholics or their hormones are so stinking messed up or whatever, and they have nothing but trouble. They start the reset and it's not easy. It's simple, it's not easy.

Some people sail through it and others, if they're metabolically really unwell, there's an adjustment. Your body is changing fuels. You're [00:24:00] going from low octane to jet fuel. Your brain is different. It has to react to that. Everything is better when you're mitochondria get that jet fuel. It's meant to be. It's not keto, it isn't. People mistake it. It's not. It's keto-like, but it's not keto.

I try and explain... See, keto is [00:24:30] get your carbs down almost to nothing, 20 grams for women, maybe 50 grams for men. There's keto foods and there's keto this and keto that. But the reset isn't that. We're bringing the carbs to nothing, but you're replacing... Okay, you have to understand that this is a replacement, because people think it's a weight loss program. It wasn't meant for that, although [00:25:00] I'm telling you there's no better weight loss program in the world. You name it, I've done it. I've read about it, I've written about it, I've pontificated about it.

My patients over 46 years... There isn't a diet in the world that I didn't know about. I've written books on diets, but this is different. It's not made for that. It's meant to fix metabolic syndrome. That's why I created it. You in four weeks, [00:25:30] four weeks... A diabetic will go into remission. In four weeks your triglycerides will come down, your HDL will go up, your A1C will come down, your CRP will come down, that's C-reactive protein inflammation.

You know what? I think I'm going to do another teaching on it. It's a replacement of fuels. You're going here and then your body will change [00:26:00] fuels because of that nutrient density. You're going to go up here 100% to now rocket fuel inside yourselves. That's the difference in the cells and the mitochondria. This is why I preach it unashamedly. It is a high fat, high protein diet, high, high, high fat.

Okay, so tomorrow we talk again. We love you guys. Get your friends. Share this [00:26:30] teaching on Facebook, the algorithm. I don't know anything about it, guys, but it's supposed to be good if you do it. Share it. By the end of the day there will be nine or 10,000 people that have watched this video. That's you guys. It's not me, it's you.

Every day nine, 10, sometimes higher, thousand people watch the video and then the podcast. Okay, love you guys. Talk to you soon.

Announcer: [00:27:00] You've reached the end of another The Doctor Is In podcast, with your host Dr. Martin Jr. and Sr. Be sure to catch our next episode, and thanks for listening.
