496. Q&A With Dr.Martin

Transcript Of Today's Episode

Announcer: You're listening to The Doctor Is In Podcast, brought to you by Martinclinic.com. During the episode, the doctors share a lot of information. As awesome as the info may be it is not intended to diagnose, cure, treat, or prevent any disease. It's strictly for informational purposes.

Dr. Martin: Well, good morning everyone. And welcome again to another live this morning. I hope you're having a great start to your day and good to have you on with us this morning. [00:00:30] And we got a good feedback from yesterday, doing it in the afternoon. It was different, but a lot of people appreciated it. So let's go through the questions. All good questions, so we appreciate that. Send your question in, don't be shy. We're here to answer your questions. So like to tell you every Friday, I usually break them up by food and supplements and then conditions. So I usually do the conditions last.

So [00:01:00] here's Jamie asking, "How come we can't have hot sauce on the reset?" Well, remember it's eggs, meat, and cheese. You can drink coffee and water, tea, if you want it. I don't know why anybody would want to drink tea when you can drink coffee, anyways. No, there's a reason for it. I don't want anything else in the body [00:01:30] other than 100% nutrients. Now, if you've got a little bit of hot sauce, it's got no sugar in it, you know what? I'm not going to scold you for that. But the idea is that your body gets a break from everything else except high density nutrients in eggs, meat, and cheese.

So again, I don't necessarily want to be religious [00:02:00] about it in a sense that like if you get a little hot sauce or you put a little bit of garlic or whatever. I don't care. It's not the end of the world, but the idea for this it's a ... Remember the reset is temporary. Now some people are staying on it because they feel so stinking good on it. And guess what? It's fantastic for them. You can eat that way the rest of your life, but for others, you can introduce [00:02:30] things that you like, like fruits and vegetables, afterwards.

The idea with this, it's very specific. It fixes metabolic syndrome. If you're in that 88%, it will take you out of that 88% and put you in the 12% only of people that got no insulin resistance. And somebody asked me a question the other day, and I can't even remember if it somebody asked it again. [00:03:00] Well ow long? Well look, if you still got some signs of insulin resistance after 30 days, if you've been a carboholic for a lot of years, 30 days we'll empty your liver, you'll fix your pancreas, blah, blah, blah. But you might find you still got a little bit of inflammation. We're going to talk about this, this morning because somebody asked the question about your C-reactive protein. We'll talk about that. The reset fixes it, it lowers it. Thousands [00:03:30] of found that out, especially the ones that were tested, had their blood work done before, and then the blood work done afterwards. So hot sauce, if you can't live without it for 30 days, then have a little bit, but no sugar. A lot of those sauces have sugars in them. I don't want that.

Lynn, again, on the reset stool changes on the reset. You're giving your body [00:04:00] a big break. Part of the big break is for your gut too. People don't realize, carbs are sponges. Carbs are sponges. They take up a lot of water in your body. And guess what they'll do? They'll produce generally, generally, there are always exceptions, when I say something like this. But understand carbs, take up a lot of volume in your gut [00:04:30] and they take a lot of water with it. Carbohydrates will dehydrate the body. They'll suck up water in that gut. And so you're going to have a large stool, whoopie doopie. What does that mean? You got a large stool, who cares. No, really.

I remember I was hired, I did a little bit of consulting, but it wasn't more than not. I was just hired [00:05:00] to be a speaker and I did a tour with this company. This is years ago, 20 years ago, at least. And because I could speak French, they sent me into Quebec, but I didn't talk about their product at all, at all, at all. I just talked about health. So every night I would do a different type of seminar in a different city in Quebec. And we did a few in Ontario too, but their big thing was looking at your stool. They [00:05:30] had this product and then you looked at the toilet and you saw. And I used to sit and listen to some of the testimonies afterwards and for me, look, my expertise is in clinical nutrition. I'm telling you that the best thing that you can do for your gut is to get off those stinking carbs and fiber.

Donna, you're asking about using oat fiber in recipes. [00:06:00] Well, obviously that is done not during the reset. You want to do some oat fiber after. If you were on yesterday afternoon, you know what I said? If a doctor, any doctor tells you that oatmeal, steel-cut or whatever, is better in the morning than an egg, run. They don't know what they're talking about. [00:06:30] And I know it's been pumped into us for years and years and years. Fiber, fiber, fiber, you need fiber. No, you don't. It's called insoluble fiber for a reason. Your body doesn't take it in, it's to wash out the bowel. Man, drink water that'll wash your bowel, naturally without scrubbing it to death [00:07:00] with fiber. I'm not telling you, you can never have fiber, there's fiber and fruits and vegetables. I get it, overrated.

You have no idea how many people with leaky gut, with IBS, with all sorts of digestive, diverticulosis, diverticulitis, ulcerative colitis or whatever. You know what I do? I get them off all the fibers. [00:07:30] Quit, irritating your bowel. Dr. Martin, I'm used to going to the bathroom two or three times a day. Well, you're not a dog. You don't have to go two or three times a day. I know I go against the grain guys, but I'm telling you, give your gut a rest, eggs, meat, and cheese. See eggs, meat and cheese are so full of all your vitamins, [00:08:00] all your minerals, all your nutrition, all your proteins, your healthy fats, that your body will take almost all of it in. So you're not going to have a big stool. You might not go to the bathroom every day. Oh, Dr. Martin, if I don't go to the bathroom every day, I might die. No you won't. No, you won't. You ladies with your chicken and salad, salad, [00:08:30] salad. If I don't have salad, and you wonder why you got so many digestive issues. You're not a rabbit. You're not a rabbit. Anyways, that was Lynn.

Mimi, butter does it effect your microbiome? Only in a good way. You know what kills [00:09:00] your microbiome is sugar and crappy carbs. And those vegetable seed oils that you get in your crackers and you get in your bagels and you get in all that stuff, affects your microbiome, but your bowel loves butter. It loves butter. The CLA that's in butter, the vitamin K2 that's in butter. It's fantastic for [00:09:30] you. Can you eat too much butter? Eh, no. Now listen, let me just make a statement, so that you understand. For the reset and I get it ladies. I get it. A lot of you do it for weight loss and it's the best. I mean it, it is the best and healthiest weight loss diet that you can have. It's the best. [00:10:00] Now it wasn't created for weight loss. It was created originally to get rid of diabetes. It will put diabetes into remission because diabetes is an allergy to carbs, a 100%. I created that diet and I've done other diets. I created other diets for weight loss, for chronic fatigue syndrome, whatever. [00:10:30] But this is the best. This is a 100% better than all of the other ones that I talked about for years.

Now, listen, let's say you have 20 pieces of cheese, is cheese good for you? A 100%. Somebody asked this question, let me answer it at the same time. Bonnie, she watched a documentary that said eggs and cheese have lots of sugar [00:11:00] in it. Bonnie, no. Eggs, and cheese have fat. You know what their macros are? Fat and protein. You're lucky to get one gram of carb in cheese and a gram of carb in an egg, they're perfect foods. So I don't know what documentary you were watching, but don't watch it again because it's stupid.

[00:11:30] In the first day in your PhD in nutrition, you learn. No, but this is why eggs and cheese, for example and even today, red meat is vilified. Oh, it is so bad for you. It's got too much fat. It's got too much protein, not enough carbs. That's what they'll tell you. No, there's not enough carbs. You need carbs. [00:12:00] No, you don't. You don't need carbs. If you never had another carb ... Bonnie, I didn't watch it, maybe they said this, that if your body needs sugar, it will take a piece of steak and turn it into sugar. But if you've listened to me and I repeat it almost every day, sugar is poison in your bloodstream. Sugar is the new smoking. Your body [00:12:30] reacts to sugar by doing what? It secretes insulin. And it has to take sugar out of your bloodstream. Otherwise, you're going to destroy your blood vessels. Your body knows that.

So I don't know what documentary, but here let me come back to the other thing I was saying, if you eat too much cheese and really ... Somebody said, "Well, how much is too much?" I don't care. But if your goal [00:13:00] is to lose weight, you want to lose the fat inside your body, so you want your body to turn on that fat. If you're eating 10 pounds of bacon, well your body will have to burn the 10 pounds of bacon. It's not going to turn on your inside and burn fat on the inside of your body. Think about that. But health wise, in terms of energy and in terms of the best fuel, you're better off to have bacon. You're better [00:13:30] off to have cheese. You're better off to have eggs than you are to have a brand muffin or oatmeal, a 100%.

So Donna, Mimi ... Oh, Mary is asking about the different types of magnesium. All magnesium is good. The best, according to me and listen, I always tell people look, you got to understand practice for 46 [00:14:00] years. I had to get results. Every day I get asked about different things and I say, "Yeah, I like it. But I found this to be better in practice." I do that a lot by the way. And guys, you got to understand for me ... On the internet, you're going to read, this is great and magnesium gluconate or magnesium biphosphate, magnesium this. I found in my practice, [00:14:30] magnesium citrate to be the best. It's the most bioavailable of the magnesiums. And we're having such a stinking hard time to get the exact magnesium that I've always got because of COVID. Ooh, drives me crazy. But I don't want a secondary type. I always got the best results with this one type of citrate, but doesn't mean the other magnesiums are no good. [00:15:00] But I like citrate and I like a specific type of citrate, anyway. We got to do some teaching on that one day, I'll do that.

Linda, "Should I be taking vitamin B1?" Yes, in food. You know how you get your B vitamins? Eggs, meat and cheese. B1, B2, B3, B6. Red meat, B12. So you won't hear me [00:15:30] talking about taking a B-complex, for example. Now, if you want to take it, I've got a B-complex in my blood boost. I put everything in there. But those are for people that have really low blood and people that are going through cancer treatment. People that are an anemic, people that don't eat properly. And look, if you can find a better product in terms of a multivitamin, [00:16:00] multi amino acids, a multi ... All the herbs that I like, it's all in there, man. Tooting my own horn. But generally I tell people, look, eat your Bs The reason hat people are so low in B, because they eat chicken and salad.

Ladies, eat butter, eat eggs, eat meat, eat cheese. And you've got all your B vitamins, [00:16:30] all of them, including B12. Now, you know me, I separate B12 off a little bit because what are they saying, 70, 80% of the population today is low in B12. It's a sad state of affairs, because red meat is going to give you get cancer. Red meat is no good for you. Vitamin S, steak. [00:17:00] It has zinc. It's the best thing for COVID. It's got zinc, it's got vitamin D, it's the top of the food chain. numero uno. Liver's a little bit higher, but I don't like liver. I don't like the taste of it. So you won't hear me talking about liver that much, but just because me, I don't like it. I don't expect people to eat something that I don't like. Well, it's good for you. Liver [00:17:30] is fantastic. Who doesn't like steak?

I talked to a lady the other day. She said, "I don't eat that. It's got eyeballs." I felt like, "Lady, you have no idea what you're missing, man." What vitamin D level is good? Well, look, here's what I like, in American numbers, I like vitamin D, [00:18:00] dihydroxy 25, which is your serum vitamin D levels. I like it to be above 60. Someone was saying the other day, I really liked it. It said, they shouldn't let you on a plane without the vaccine, but in the day and age they said without your vitamin D levels in the United States to be above 60, about 10% of the population have vitamin D levels above 60. And in Canada, I like about [00:18:30] 125 to 150, even higher than that to be optimized, but a minimum of 125 in Canad, 60 in the United States and above, 60 to 90, you want to fight cancer. Get it high. And 125 to about 200 in Canada. I like those levels. Good question.

Oh, [00:19:00] Lori's going on a cheat day. Okay. So this is past the reset, then you're doing a cheat day, which I like. I want you to cheat, once you get past the reset. Have a cheat day, it's all right. Will I lose more weight, if I have a cheat day and eat more carbs? No, no, you won't. You don't need carbs to lose weight Lori. I promise you that, that's the problem in the first place. The reason that there's so much [00:19:30] obesity, so much trouble with weight. I mean, there's hormones and all sorts of things, but the number one thing is carbohydrates. It's sugars and carbs, my dear. So no, you're going to have a cheat day. You want to have some pasta, you've been a good girl all week. Enjoy. I got no problem with that. I like the idea of rewards, I really do. I'm big on rewards.

I married an Italian for heaven's sakes, [00:20:00] if you told me I could never have pasta. Oh, what do you mean? Now, not during the reset. You know what I found? A little bit of noodle. It's not the noodles I like, it's the meat I like. I love the meat. I'm a big guy on the meatballs and the sausages, in my wife's sauce to die for. And I see the noodles, it's pasta. [00:20:30] I have a little bit as a treat, but I don't live on, I'm a meat guy and much better for you. And you get used to it, it's like anything else, you have to form habits. You just go, "Yeah. Yeah." You're at a party, whatever, have a little bit, but fill up on the meat and the meat sauce. All good questions.

Jim's asking [00:21:00] about COPD. Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. Well look, we wrote an email the other day that showed you the link. Your bacteria in your gut Jim, imagine they communicate with each other. This is something we did not know. All these new studies that are coming out about bacteria. Your body's made up of bacteria. Good, bad, and ugly. You need to have a balance and your lungs, [00:21:30] leaky gut, leaky lungs. We explained it in the email, great teaching. And when you have leaky gut, you see, you have a little lining in your gut. It's a barrier between your gut and your blood. And when you have a good barrier made up of guards, healthy bacteria. They sit there at the border of your gut and your blood and they won't let garbage in. [00:22:00] No undigested food, no bacteria, no viruses, no parasites, no yeast, no poop. Sometimes you get poop in the blood, micro-size because you got leaky gut. Well, what can happen? It can get leaky gut, leaky lungs. It can go through the bloodstream into the lungs. It loves moisture, especially [00:22:30] yeast.

I've never seen a case of COPD where they didn't have a major fungal yeast infection in their lungs. So what do you do, Jim? Fix your gut because it started in the gut. Now, if you were a smoker and all this and that, or you worked in an environmental soup and chemicals and all that. Sure, you breathe that in that can affect your lungs. All of these cleaners. Ladies, I'm so worried about lung [00:23:00] disease down the road with all this spray, spray, spray, all these antibacterial stuff. I hate that stuff. Use oil oregano, even to clean your house, use vinegar. Oh, I can't stand all the other chemicals. You have no idea what that does. Why do you think we see so many allergies and so much asthma and so much garbage in the lungs, [00:23:30] so take care of your gut Jim. Don't use any of that chemical stuff. Don't put it on your hands and don't put it. That's going to get into your bloodstream guys and take probiotics. And one thing they know about vitamin D is, that vitamin D is essential for your lungs. I like high DHA oil too, lubricate those alveoli in your lungs. [00:24:00] High DHA oil, Omega 3, eat steak Jim. You get a lot of Omega 3 in steak. So generally that's the answer.

Denise, long-term effects of suppressing the thyroid. Well listen, you can get hyperthyroid, that's why you would suppress your TSH Or you can get hypo and you got medications that want to build up and artificially [00:24:30] bring your TSH up. Remember what I've said about the thyroid, just to understand where I'm coming from. The thyroid is a puppet. The thyroid does not act on its own. It's part of your endocrine system and I find if you can get your estrogen, get your progesterone balanced, get your cortisol down, clean out your liver, because this is where the T4 to T3 [00:25:00] occurs in the liver. You can't have fatty liver. That's why the diet is so important. You don't want to have leaky gut because T4 to T3 about 20% of it occurs inside your gut. So very, very good question. But all these things will help to balance your thyroid.

So Denise, it's a good question. What are the long-term effects? Well, you can Google that, the long terms effect [00:25:30] of medication. Look, sometimes you have no choice, if your thyroid is not working. I've known a lot of people that have had radiation to kill the thyroid, to suppress the thyroid, but I'm looking everywhere else, the thyroid on its own. And I stimulate the thyroid oftentimes or level it out. That's why the thyroid formula is good because it's good for both. But I look elsewhere, I look at cortisol. I look at the gut. I look at [00:26:00] the liver. I look at all those things for balance of thyroid.

Somebody's asking, I didn't even write the name. Well, Janine was asking about hearing loss and somebody else was asking about tinnitus. What is the cause of that? Well, one of the biggest thing in tinnitus is insulin. It's a sign that you have insulin resistance. It's a sign that you're a carboholic. [00:26:30] Now listen, you got other factors in tinnitus. Maybe you worked in an industry with loud noise and then you got tinnitus. Manufacturing or whatever, in a plant with noise and whatever, you can get tinnitus. But I found if you are a carboholic and you lower your insulin, it really can help with tinnitus. And for some, even a cure. Now I like B12 for tinnitus. I like [00:27:00] vitamin D for tinnitus because oftentimes they're deficient in that. I like Navitol for tinnitus. There's some studies showing that it can be effective, but again, I'm a big guy on food first. And if you get all the nutrients that you need in your food. Oftentimes when you lower your insulin, it makes a big difference.

Coleman is asking about under arm sweating and Julia was saying her father, [00:27:30] every time he eats, he gets that sweaty. Hey, it's just the way you're built. We call it hyperhidrosis, excessive sweating. What do you do about it? Can I be honest, I've never seen anything that really was that effective for it. Someone tells you they have a cure for that, run too, because they're usually lying. My experience, it's just the way you are. It's not easy. And some people have had surgery under their armpits to [00:28:00] change the glands there. I don't like playing with nature. And look, I get it. You don't like that excessive sweating and that, but I never found anything to really be that effective and help. I'm not going to tell you something that I have never really seen work. So you sweat a lot when you eat or whatever. Well, it's the way you're built.

Okay, Let's do the CRP because [00:28:30] Cheryl is asking, what is CRP? CRP is C-reactive protein. It is a measure of your inflammation, silent inflammation. So if you have rheumatoid arthritis or any auto immune disease, you got an inflammatory response. And so between zero to six, zero to three really is normal limits. I don't like anything [00:29:00] over three. I actually don't like anything over one. It needs to be under one. That means you have no inflammation. If it's under one, you've got nothing to worry about. You go into a higher risk for heart disease, for cancer.

This is 25 years ago, at the university in Sudbury, Laurentian University, they actually did a study on C-reactive protein. And they said they could tell you by [00:29:30] checking your C-reactive protein to see if you had a possibility ... Seven years ahead of time to see if you could ... It's one of the tests that doctors don't do enough of, they should it routinely, to see if you are at risk for a heart disease. But it's more than heart, anything with inflammation, auto immune, heart disease, cancer, Alzheimer's because inflammation is not Houdini. It doesn't come [00:30:00] on its own. But if you have high levels of insulin or whatever, that'll drive your CRP up. So that's what it is. It's C-reactive protein. It's a very effective test. It's one of the things I love to look at. Ask your doctor, if you don't ask, a lot of times they won't do it. Ask for it. I want my CRP done. Good question.

Joanna. Does endometriosis go away? Yes, it can. [00:30:30] Sometimes surgery's involved and it's severe endometriosis, where you have to have a hysterectomy, but what is the cause of endometriosis? Too much estrogen, too much of a woman. And remember women fight a war all the time between estrogen and progesterone, it has to be balanced. So when we say estrogen [inaudible 00:30:58] says, "Hey well doc, what do you mean? My estrogen should be going [00:31:00] down." Yeah, but it all has to do with, in relationship to your progesterone, ladies. You see men, we fight testosterone and estrogen. That's our war. Women fight estrogen and progesterone. That's their war. If you have endometriosis, you have too much estrogen compared to your progesterone, a 100%. Estrogen is a growth hormone. The endometrium grows [00:31:30] because you have too much estrogen. And guess what another hormone is? Insulin. It's a growth hormone. You get PCOS, polycystic ovarian disorder, insulin estrogen. So can you get rid of it? Some people have, changing their diet, taking DIM. Te hormonal formula, it's meant to lower your estrogen, knock it down, get it where it needs to [00:32:00] be. Very good questions.

Karen, "If a person is stressed for a long time, how long does it take to get their cortisol back to normal?" Depends. A lot of this has to do with your environment, family dynamics, a lot of it has to do with personality. Some people get stressed easier than others. So we all got a different fingerprint. [00:32:30] There's what, 7.3 billion people in the world? Your fingerprint is different than mine and everybody else's on the planet too. So it depends. Sometimes people have been taking our cortisol formula for years and years and years. They just don't feel that good without it. It's only good for you. I like vitamin E, exercise for cortisol, lowering your stress level. Keep your insulin [00:33:00] down. You need a good sleep. There's a lot of factors. So very good question.

Diane, asking about vitiligo. Well, there's two factors in vitiligo and that is when, in certain areas of the body ... It's skin disorder. What causes it? Genetics, leaky gut. Environmental issues can effect. So again, [00:33:30] the thing that you can control is, fix the gut. That's really important. Good question. DUTCH hormone testing. DUTCH hormone testing, you know what that is? That is dry samples. So instead of doing like urine, they do a dry sample of urine. Do I like it? Yeah. I like it. Remember any hormone test though, let me just say it because I did hormone tests for years and years and years and years. Cortisol, estrogen. [00:34:00] I did all that and I taught my staff this. I don't care what that test tells you, I really don't. Compared to, what are your symptoms? I'm more interested ... Symptoms always trumped the lab, always trumped the lab.

So what are your symptoms? Like, we were talking about the thyroid earlier, a lot of people, " [00:34:30] Oh, my doctor says my thyroid is good. Oh, yeah. But I'm losing my hair. I'm gaining weight. I don't feel good. Blah, blah, blah, blah, blah." I said, "Well, that's your thyroid. I don't care what the lab said." Doctors at one time didn't rely on labs. Today, they don't even see the patients most of the time. They just, "Oh, we'll wait and see what your blood test tells me. We'll wait and see what your hormone tests tell me." I read hormone tests and tell me how you're feeling. [00:35:00] Tell me your symptoms. I want to hear about that first. I'm not saying I wouldn't look at your cortisol levels, for example, we used to do that in the office. I didn't care what it said compared to how you're feeling, symptoms.

The lab's got it upside down. I remember doctors including my father saying, "The [00:35:30] labs, if it walks like a duck and talks like a duck, it's a duck." Much more important that I know your symptoms. And a lot of times in those hormones, it's not just estrogen. Remember what I was talking about the thyroid, you need to look at the whole picture. I don't want to just know what the ovaries are doing. What are your adrenals doing? What is your thyroid doing? What's your pancreas doing? That's your endocrine system. I'm a holistic [00:36:00] guy. I want to see all of it. Testing, yeah, yeah. I'm not against it. I'm just saying it's a tool, but it's not the only tool in the toolbox, symptoms are more important. They trump those tools.

Okay, I think I'm done. One more question. What about the DHT hormone? Yeah, that's a sex hormone, really important. But guys, I don't care, you can test it. You can do whatever you [00:36:30] want. I don't care. I don't even want to know. I want your symptoms. I can tell a man in five seconds, give me your symptoms, if his testosterone is low. I don't even need to see the number. I can look at a man pretty well and tell him if his testosterone is high or low. Remember a man battles every day his testosterone with estrogen. And I know a lot of men that got more estrogen than their wives. I mean it, [00:37:00] how do you think you get prostate cancer?

So if you're not part of the Martin Clinic Facebook group, get in there. Thank you. I want to thank you on behalf of my son and I. We want to thank you for making the reset book. Probably the number one seller in Canada. Yeah, I think it would be. We only had limited amount, but [00:37:30] we want to thank you for the enormous success of that book. Incredible launch and we just sort of half launched it, but that's all right. Thank you. We want to thank you for supporting that endeavor, we really do. And if you have any questions for next week, send them in. We love you guys. Talk to you soon.

Announcer: You've reached the end of another Doctor Is In Podcast with your hosts, Dr. [00:38:00] Martin Jr. And Sr. Be sure to catch our next episode. And thanks for listening.
