398. Q&A With Dr.Martin

Transcript Of Today's Episode

Announcer: You're listening to the Doctor Is In podcast, brought to you by martinclinic.com.

During the episode, the doctors share a lot of information. As awesome as the info may be, it is not intended to diagnose, cure, treat, or prevent any disease. It's strictly for informational purposes.

Dr. Martin: Hello, good morning everyone. So we're going to do question and answers this morning, and hope you enjoy our time.

Okay. So let's get into the questions somebody.

First question that was asked is about [00:00:30] night terrors and what to do about them.

Well, I'm sure everybody's experienced at some time or another having a very bad dream, but night terrors, really, as a condition ...

When people get this kind of thing, you always look at, is there any kind of deficiencies?

So in my clinic days, I always looked for deficiencies.

And it actually [00:01:00] was nice because we could do the blood work or saliva or whatever, and actually look for these deficiencies.

Here's what I found with people; first of all, I don't think I've ever seen a case where they didn't have high levels of cortisol. So that stress hormone was high.

Secondly, often they were low in vitamin B12. Remember, your B12 is a brain vitamin.

It's a very important vitamin.

And this is [00:01:30] why I'm always telling you to eat red meat, because it's the only way to get it in food.

I mean, you can get a little bit of B12 in brewers yeast, but that's not enough for a mouse.

You need high levels of B12, and that's found in steak.

And if you have any kind of digestive issues, well, then you often need to do a supplement of vitamin B12.

Now remember about B12, it has to be taken sublingually under the tongue, and it has to be the right [00:02:00] B12.

You can get a B12 shot, and that's fine.

But the problem is, it's usually a pain to do that.

I like the methylcobalamin vitamin B12.

Take it daily, get your B12 levels up.

I like to see them around 800 to 1200 in your blood work. B12 is an important vitamin.

Most people, I'd say near the 80% mark, are low in B12.

The other thing is too with night terrors, remember, get your [00:02:30] melatonin levels up.

How do you do that?

Get in the sun! Get in the sun, especially in the morning. Get 10, 15, 20 minutes. Anytime the sun is out, get out in the sun. Don't burn in the sun, but get your sun, because that's how you get melatonin.

And then make sure your room is dark at night.

So dark, dark, dark. If you have to, wear a face mask. Not the face mask for COVID. The face mask to cover your eyes, your eye mask.

[00:03:00] I sleep with an eye mask because I want the highest levels of melatonin.

Isn't it interesting that you get melatonin in the morning from the sun?

If you want to take a melatonin supplement, fine.

But most of the time, it doesn't work after a certain amount of time. It just seems to wear off or your body gets used to it.

That's the supplemental melatonin.

But remember, your body makes [00:03:30] melatonin. It's a hormone. Your body makes it.

But it makes it from the sunlight.

Remember, you're a human solar panel. Your body needs the sun.

So the sun and then darkness at night. Real dark. The darkest you can get your room.

And if you have to, like I say, cover up your eyes even with an eye mask.

That's really, really important to get that, because [00:04:00] with night terrors or even any sleep problems, you've got to elevate your melatonin.

And then secondly, watch for low levels of magnesium.

This is what I used to find in the office. Low levels of B12, low levels of melatonin and low levels of magnesium.

Very good question. Thank you very much.

Somebody was asking about ... You know what? I should have wrote the names down. Well, hold it. I have it here. I'm going to go through the names. So I'll tell you who asked me that. I have it here on my emails.

[00:04:30] Okay. So the first question was asked by Joy. And Jan is asking about Himalayan salt. When you cook with Himalayan salt, and I hope you do, the question is asked, do you lose the nutrients when you cook it?

Nope.

And just to be sure, use it on the food after, when you eat it.

There's nothing like Himalayan salt.

Why is that?

Well, because it has 84 minerals in it. It's so good for [00:05:00] you.

Salt is good for you. You know, salt has got a bad rap. They blamed salt for what sugar does.

Now that's not my dog, by the way, if you can hear it barking. That's the neighbor's dog.

Okay. So Jan, no, you don't lose your salt when you cook with Himalayan salt.

You've got 84 minerals.

The pink in there, you know what that is? That's your iron. And it has [00:05:30] iodine in it. It has 84 minerals. I love Himalayan salt. So use it. Use it. Don't be shy. You can use it. I don't care if you have high blood pressure. You can use Himalayan salt. It'll actually help to lower your blood pressure.

The blood pressure, somebody's asking this this morning.

Might as well answer it right now.

What about blood pressure?

Because they were actually asking about low blood pressure.

But high blood pressure is your body screaming at you, "Hello!" If you have high blood pressure ...

Well, [00:06:00] let me just get the question. I think they were asking about ... There was two questions on high blood pressure. Let me just get to it here in a second here.

I think they were asking about cranial blood pressure.

That's what it was. And that's a specific condition.

But again, blood pressure is a symptom.

When you have high blood pressure ...

That's the question.

Idiopathic. Idiopathic means, "Oh, well, [00:06:30] we don't know what causes your high blood pressure. You got it."

Well, listen. You can't see your endothelial level on your blood vessels. And inflammation starts to affect that.

But inflammation is not Houdini. It didn't just come out of nowhere. It comes from elevated insulin. Insulin.

So remember; it's food.

And then I like high DHA [00:07:00] to help your blood vessels with the high blood pressure.

I've treated this for so many years.

I love Navitol because it elevates your nitric oxide. Again, that affects your endothelial levels. That's your little Teflon.

What is endothelial? Your little Teflon layer of your blood vessels. You don't want those to be like Teflon. You want them to slip, not stick. And magnesium helps with that too. [00:07:30] But get your inflammation down due to elevated levels of insulin.

You know what? It's insulin, man. It's so important to get that.

And the other question was on low blood pressure.

Well, the low blood pressure is often, you have to look at what's causing it.

Generally, what I find, it's the thyroid.

It's low levels of thyroid. And you know what?

You know me, I talk about this all the time.

Thyroid is a very finicky [00:08:00] organ. It's a puppet. The thyroid doesn't act independently. It's a messenger. And so, if you have low blood pressure, you're lightheaded when you stand up fast, that's low blood pressure. Usually, it comes from the thyroid.

And another factor that affects the thyroid is the adrenal glands.

The adrenals is your stress glands. And if your cortisol is high, you're not [00:08:30] converting T4 to T3 properly, that will slow your thyroid down. That can give you low blood pressure.

And we talked about it yesterday. It can give you hypoglycemia.

Low blood sugar too. So watch your diet, of course. Look out.

A lot of times the blood work on the thyroid is very inconclusive.

Remember that.

Doctors today, they're fixated on the lab. The lab. "The lab said you're normal." "Yeah, well, I don't [00:09:00] feel normal." Well, go with your feelings. Okay? Because the lab is so ... Look, they're numbers. God love the lab technicians, but they're just bean counters. They count numbers. You need your symptoms.

Somebody was asking, "What do I ask for when I want to go get my estrogen levels checked?"

Well, your doctor knows what to order, but I don't even like those numbers.

You send them to me and ... Tell [00:09:30] me what your symptoms are.

I want to know your symptoms, because you might have very normal estrogen levels and progesterone levels, and yet you have all the symptoms of estrogen dominance and low levels of progesterone.

And I tell people, "Well, your symptoms override the lab."

Thousands and thousands of women especially have come into my office over the years with very low functioning thyroid, and their blood work was [00:10:00] within normal limits.

Remember?

Ladies Lives Matter?

Well, your life matters.

And a lot of times, it's horror-mones, and thyroid can play major tricks on you.

So I'm not saying don't get the blood work. I'm telling you don't rely on the blood work. Rely on your symptoms and fix those things. There's always a cause to it. Okay?

Very good questions. I appreciate it very much.

DHA, they're asking [00:10:30] about it for kids.

Well, yes, yes, yes, yes.

Your brain is made up of DHA. And when I see an autistic kid, when I see a kid with ADD or ADHD, they're bouncing off the walls and they can't focus, I changed their diet.

And kids are smart.

You know what? I tell you, kids are very intelligent. You just have to have grandchildren to figure that out. Kids are smart. They listen. You think, "Oh, they're not even paying attention." [00:11:00] They're pretty smart. They're listening.

In the office, I used to grab their little faces and say, "Listen to me, Linda." It wasn't always Linda, but you know what I'm saying? I used to say, "Listen though, are you tired of getting in trouble at school?" "Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah." "You can't focus? Whatever?" I said, "Okay. Now, I'm not going to get you to do a hundred things, but I'm going to get you to do a couple of things. And mommy and daddy, they understand this, and I want you [00:11:30] to understand it. You see that sugar there? You see your cookies and your ice cream, and whatever? Not too much. I'm not saying don't have any. You're a kid. But don't live on it. You have that first piece of pizza? Okay, great. The second piece, just eat the toppings and make sure you eat a lot of meat. Okay? Eat the toppings. Leave the crust there, because that's going to be sugar in five seconds. That's going to go right to your brain."

And your brain [00:12:00] loves sugar.

Not that it's good for it, but your brain is a teenager.

It wants sugar.

Because if you give it fuel, it doesn't matter what kind of fuel you give, your brain will suck up the big portion of it.

Because your brain is headquarters.

So you see, for kids, their brain is made up of that good fat, DHA.

Somebody said to me the other day, "Oh, why do you always talk about DHA?" I said, "Because I'm a fat head. That's why." [00:12:30] Someone calls you fat head, take it as a compliment. Your brain is made up of fat. Those neuro-transmitters.

And you know what I get kids too?

I get kids not only on DHA oil. I have to give them the oil, because I want to give them therapeutic doses.

I changed their diet, I give them therapeutic doses of DHA, and they do really well. They do really well. Kids change that, it's amazing what happens to them.

[00:13:00] Now, I'd rather you eat your DHA if you don't need it for kids.

Okay?

Because it's not easy giving them oil.

But listen, if they're autistic or whatever, they need to be sliding out of rooms they're taking so much of that DHA. It's so good for them. I have had teachers literally phone my office and say, "I want to talk to Dr. Martin." Teachers. And they say, "I don't know what you did with that kid, but what a difference." And you know, I tell the teacher, I say, "Man, I [00:13:30] changed their chemistry because of their diet and whatever."

These are just canaries in a coal mine, these poor kids.

And we see so much more of it today.

And they're carboholics.

How would you like consuming 200 pounds of sugar a year?

They don't even realize it.

It's in everything.

So their brains get affected.

And of course, I'm big on probiotics.

You know that.

Because leaky gut, leaky brain.

I've never seen an autistic kid ever, not once, never [00:14:00] seen an autistic kid that didn't have severe leaky gut.

You know, mommy was on antibiotics, or whatever, or antibiotics within their first two years for ear infections, or whatever. They start a leaky gut, then they start a candida fungus, yeast, and the yeast goes up to their brain. I'm telling you, I've never seen exceptions to it. They had enough yeast coming out their ears. So you don't feed the bears. Don't give it sugar. And then you can kill the yeast by probiotics. And you just [00:14:30] make the kid understand that. "It's not your fault." I tell them, "It's not your fault."

Oh, and by the way, let me tie this one in, because it's another question.

What about chelation?

Somebody was asking about heavy metals. Well, that's another thing.

We used to test in the office for heavy metals; mercury, lead, cadmium. I tell you, there's heavy metal, but you know what?

I've never seen heavy metals in a person that didn't have leaky gut. So probiotics is a great key leader.

You know what chelation is? [00:15:00]

Chelation is just literally like Velcro, and it attaches to the heavy metals and it takes your heavy metals out of your body. And we're surrounded by heavy metals. Mercury, it's in high fructose corn syrup. I tell people, "Don't worry about fish", because a lot of people, "Oh, fish. That's where you get mercury."

No!

It's from high fructose corn syrup. It's made in a laboratory sugar that they put into everything from your ketchup, [00:15:30] to your bagels, to your cereals, to whatever.

Even salad dressing with sugar added, they're using high fructose corn syrup. And then they lie about it. They call it another name. But they're always using that cheap sugar that was made in a stinking lab.

And guess what that does?

It has heavy metals in it. Mercury, for heaven sakes. I get uptight because people don't know that stuff. [00:16:00] And we're being poisoned, slowly poisoned with foods. And I know we don't live in a perfect world and you'll never get perfection on this side of the planet, but guys, you do every bit you can. And so chelating is meaning you take it out.

I have a section in my new book on Glutathione.

What is that? Glutathione?

Well, it's three amino acids. "Okay, doc. What's that mean?" Okay.

All it [00:16:30] is, is your body makes glutathione when you eat eggs, meat, and cheese.

Your body will make it when you eat the right foods. And glutathione is like Velcro. It flows through your bloodstream to take out your heavy metals and help you to get rid of yeast. And you know me, about the liver. I will repeat this till the cows come home; your liver is your detox organ, and your liver will work perfectly when [00:17:00] you empty it. It's a suitcase. Unpack it by lowering your carbohydrates and your sugars.

Look, somebody asked me another question. Hey, I'm getting a lot of questions here.

Somebody asked me a question about alcohol. Where does it go?

100% to your liver. In a nanosecond. Alcohol turns to sugar in your liver in a nanosecond. You're filling your liver up. That's why you get cirrhosis of the liver [00:17:30] with alcohol.

But you know what?

The biggest problem is not cirrhosis.

The biggest trouble is fatty liver from sugars and crappy carbs.

They're stored. So empty the suitcase. That's why I love the reset. It'll empty your liver in 30 days. Empty. Okay? So got that? Okay. Good. Very good question. DHA.

Somebody's asking about the ionic foot bath. As [00:18:00] a detox.

I'm not telling you don't spend your money on that.

So don't come after me, please.

But don't spend your money on it.

No, because I just told you how to detox.

You got to eat anyways, so eat the right foods and you'll empty your liver.

If you empty your liver, you're going to get rid of heavy metals. You're going to get rid of all the mycotoxins.

Somebody asked me how to get rid of mycotoxins. [00:18:30] You want to get rid of mycotoxins?

Your body knows how to get rid of mycotoxins. Your liver. Your liver. It's food, man. It's food. You don't have to even use supplements for your liver. Just don't eat crap.

Somebody was asking about atropic pancreas.

Well, that's caused from your liver. The liver gets gummed up. The liver is full of fat. Get rid of that fat in your liver, guys. It'll save your gallbladder. [00:19:00] It'll save your pancreas. They work together. The Trinity. They do. They do. You see?

And that's the key for your triglycerides.

Even your liver is your key for your heart.

Yes, because when your liver is full, it's sending that fat that is made from crappy carbohydrates and sugars, it sends it into your bloodstream as triglycerides. Three [00:19:30] triglycerides. Fat. Three fat balls. Three fat balls is very dangerous in your bloodstream.

And last, you have high cholesterol, good cholesterol, HDL. You need good cholesterol.

Remember, those are the FedEx trucks, the Canada Post, the US Post System, UPS, on the highways of your blood vessels, getting rid of [00:20:00] triglycerides. Guys, you do this with food.

That's another reason to take DHA. HDL. HDL is High Density Lipoprotein. Big words.

You know what drives me mental?

Medicine couches everything in big words.

People don't understand what they are. My job is to simplify that for you. So you see what I did with triglycerides? Three fat balls. HDL, [00:20:30] that's good cholesterol.

"But Dr. Martin, what about LDL?" I don't care. LDL. What's it mean? "Oh, I got to get my LDL down." "Who told you that?" "Oh, my doctor." Your doctor? It's a medication that gets your LDL down. A cholesterol lowering medication. Why do you want to have low cholesterol? For Heaven sakes, you need high cholesterol in your body.

Bad cholesterol is not [00:21:00] cholesterol. Bad cholesterol is triglycerides. That's the dangerous one. And it all has to do with that ratio between your triglycerides.

And remember, don't aim for your heart, aim for your liver.

And that'll fix your heart.

Isn't that beautiful?

You fix your liver, you fix your heart. You fix it. I think I'm going to make up a song. "If you fix your liver, you fix your brain. You fix your liver ... " Okay. I will. I'll try working on a song here. If I can find one.

[00:21:30] Somebody was asking about berberine for blood sugar.

Yeah. I use berberine. On its own, no. Look, blood sugar, first of all, is food.

You're never going to out-supplement a bad diet.

You guys know me. I have a very good insulin formula. I've used it over the years with thousands of patients. But it's in [00:22:00] adjunct with the diet, because you can't just take insulin and stay on a bad diet. It's going to eventually ... You're on the Titanic. You're going to hit that iceberg, man. You got to change course. So nothing will replace a bad diet. I'm sorry.

Supplements, I love. You know that. But you got to get the food, [00:22:30] right. It's the key. Food, food, food. You got to eat anyways. You have to eat anyways. You might as well eat the right thing.

Okay. I answered that. Okay.

Oh, somebody's asking about diverticulosis and can it be healed?

Yeah, it can be. Diverticulosis are little pouches, usually on the left side of your transverse colon.

And they're little pouches [00:23:00] caused by chicken and salad. You women. Why do women get diverticulosis more than men? Because you like your salad and your seeds and your nuts. "Ah, Dr. Martin, they're so good for me."

No, they're not. They're overrated. Spinach. Guess where it gets caught in your teeth when you eat it? So don't eat too much of it. Don't live on it. Because it sticks in your gut and it starts to form little pouches. [00:23:30] Yeah.

So how do you heal diverticulosis?

Number one, numero uno: probiotics.

Numero duo, there goes my Latin, is ... I like IBS formula. But listen. Again, I'm going to bring you back to food.

Fiber is overrated. "Oh, Dr. Martin, if I don't have my fiber, I don't go poo three times a day." Why do you want to go poo three times a day for? It's so overrated. [00:24:00] Ask somebody that's got Crohn's or ulcerative colitis. They're on the throne 20 times in the morning. That ain't no fun.

Look, I'm teasing a little bit. Please. But all I'm saying is this. You do the reset. Because the question was asked by Leila ... This is Joanna asking about diverticulosis. I think it's Leila. "My doctor said when I had diverticulosis", I don't know if it was her or her husband, "Don't eat steak." Oh, [00:24:30] I'm getting a headache. You see my migraine? Don't eat steak. Steak is the best food for diverticulosis. It's your salad. Don't have any lectins. Your veggies. Cut them out for 30 days. Let the thing heal. The pouches, let them heal. They'll heal over. It's amazing how your body is made. Okay?

And then, like I say, you absolutely need to get [00:25:00] the lining of the gut better by taking, the biggest thing is the probiotics. I love the IBS with the mucilages that coat ... And even bone broth.

Bone broth is great for diverticulosis. So either make yourself a bone broth ... And if you don't, get a bone broth ... I love bone broth. Why? Full of collagen. Full of collagen.

My brother, yesterday, was telling me about his Chinese wife, and they love the bone. [00:25:30] They love the gristle on the bone. I said, "Well, that's collagen. That's how you make bone broth, man." All that collagen is so good for their gut. Good for their skin. Good for their brain. They're smarter than we are. People are, "Oh, I'm not going to eat that." Well, it's good for you.

But that's why I love bone broth because it's full of el glutamine. You know what el glutamine is? It's an amino acid that helps to restore your cells within your gut. It's so good for [00:26:00] you. And this is why I talk about that all the time.

Oh, testing for estrogen. And again, let's go back to the blood. Look, if you show me a test for estrogen, what numbers am I looking up? I'm not. No, seriously. You can send me your blood work. You know that. I will look at your blood work. I'll give you my two pennies worth.

But here's what I'm telling people. When it comes to hormones, I don't really care about those numbers so much. I really don't. I want to know what you're feeling. What are your symptoms? [00:26:30] Okay? But thanks for the question. Thanks for the question.

Okay. Let me just see if I have any others. Oh, here's a good question. Here's a real good one sent in by, I think it's Brianna, but I could be wrong because I can't even read my own writing. Hold on a minute. Let me go look. I've got the email right here. Okay. So let me just see. Who was asking about ... Oh, yes. Brianna. It was Brianna. Brianna said, "I have a friend who's [00:27:00] 57 years old and is a bodybuilder." And she's saying, and it's a very good question, "If a high carb diet is bad for you, then why does he seem to be in such great shape?"

You know why? You know why, Brianna? I'm going to tell you why. It's such a good question. They're the very few people in the world that get to eat more carbs. You know why? They have bigger storage bins.

The more muscle you have ... Now, listen. Let me bring you a little physiology again. [00:27:30] When you have a carbohydrate, you guys know this, it's rapidly turned into sugar. If you don't use it as energy, it's going to be stored. That's insulin's job. So insulin either stores it in your liver, in your muscles, or it will make three fat cells. Liver, the storage bin, muscles. But if you don't have big muscles, you got no place to store. That's why bodybuilders ... So don't look at body builders. That's not a good example [00:28:00] anyway. Think about it. "Oh, Dr. Martin, I can eat as many carbs as I want. I am a body builder." Well, good for you. But the vast majority of people are not bodybuilders.

But you know us at the Martin Clinic. What do we tell you? Even you ladies? Build muscle. Quit just doing aerobics. "Dr. Martin, I lik to run." Well, good for you, you like to run, but be strong too. Lift some weights. Somebody said [00:28:30] online yesterday, I think, or the day before, "Take two cans of soup and start pumping them." It's a good idea. It doesn't have to be heavy weight repetition. But I'm 68 years old. I pull, I weight and I have a TRX. I do weight resistance with my own weight. Plus, I have some barbells and I do weights, guys. It's the greatest exercise. [00:29:00] You want storage bins.

But that's why he's getting away with it, Brianna. Okay? So there's no real confusion here. There's no confusion. I'm never telling a person ever to eat high carbs. Even that weightlifter. You can't out-weightlift a bad diet. Yeah, maybe he looks like he's built like a tank, but I don't know what his liver's like. I want to know what his triglycerides are. I want [00:29:30] to know what his HDL is. I need to know all that, because a lot of times, you might think a person's in tremendous shape, and underneath the skin, you look at their organs, and they're not always doing so well. You cannot beat a bad diet. You can't beat it. You're going to pay for it eventually. But most body builders I know, they're very disciplined in their eating. Yeah, they'll have a few carbs, but they're disciplined people. [00:30:00] You got to be disciplined to exercise every day.

My father, he was a hero to me. I mean, the guy was disciplined. Every stinking day, he exercised. He was disciplined. Before exercise was even popular, my dad was exercising.

Okay. So let me just make sure I ... Cindy was asking about ankylosing spondylitis, and she's asking, "What about the muscle pain in ankylosing spondylitis?" Well, remember, [00:30:30] do the reset. I have seen hundreds and hundreds of cases of ankylosing spondylitis. It's an auto immune disorder. And fibromyalgia. It really becomes auto immune after a car accident or whatever. Or chronic fatigue syndrome. Do the reset, change your diet, take high, high doses. Slide out of rooms you're taking so much oil. Become slippery. It's good for you. Okay? It's good for you.

Okay. I'm [00:31:00] out of time. You guys are great. I really appreciate all the feedback. We love that. And if you have a testimony, put it on our Martin Clinic Facebook group. It's amazing how people ... I encourage that. We are reading one this morning, Rosie and I read one together, about the guy with COVID, and he got COVID, but he had done the reset and he was in such good shape. And he's a nurse around COVID patients. And he was just so happy that, even [00:31:30] though he tested positive, he's feeling fantastic. That's what a healthy immune system does.

So guys, don't be scared to share your testimony with us. And once again, we want to thank you. We love you guys. God bless you.
