Transcript Of Today's Episode

Brandi: Laurie would like to know what do you recommend for constipation?

Dr. Martin Sr.: Lots of water.

Dr.Martin Jr: Yeah. A lot of people, first and foremost... Here's the thing, do you have any other digestive symptoms, first of all? Because you want to identify whether or not this is a symptom of another underlying digestive issue. For example-

Brandi: Sorry to interrupt you, she [00:29:00] does have IBS, SIBO and [inaudible 00:29:04]

Dr.Martin Jr: Okay, the constipation, it's a symptom. The constipation is a symptom of IBS. For a lot of people, that is a big major indication of IBS, right? Now, they have a defective or they have something going on in the health of their bowels and is causing that symptom. That's a different issue. My dad mentioned water because that's a big issue for [00:29:30] even people with IBS. A lot of them are just dehydrated, they don't get enough water in their day. They're nowhere near getting enough water. That's the first thing.

Second is, again, if you got IBS, we're assuming that you're taking probiotics, we're assuming that you're taking digestive enzymes, we're assuming if you're getting a lot of symptoms that you're taking the IBS formula as well. Those are the three things. Then magnesium is a big issue as well for people. Most people don't get enough magnesium in their diet, and they're really [00:30:00] deficient in magnesium.

Magnesium works as well. You want to look at the magnesium aspect also. A lot of people, especially with IBS, they're eating a food consistently that they're allergic to, and that's causing constipation, can cause diarrhea, can cause a mixture of both. Identify, are you eating something you should not be eating as well? Here's a good hint, aside from digestive issues, if you... Here's a good way [00:30:30] to know if you're eating a food you shouldn't be eating. Most people, if they don't get digestive symptoms, they will clear their throat a lot. They get post nasal drip at nighttime where they're coughing at nighttime. They get increased mucus, some could be some watery eyes for some people, because if you think of the body's natural reaction to a food they shouldn't be eating is to create more mucus. You can think of the eyes, the ears, itchy ears. A lot of those things are indications you're eating food you shouldn't be eating.

But [00:31:00] specifically to this question, it's the IBS. You don't just fix the constipation because if you have an underlying digestive issue, you've got to fix that. Otherwise, you're always going to be trying to fix constipation. That's the path that I would take. I don't know if you have anything else to add to that, dad?

Dr. Martin Sr.: Well, just two things. One, always check the thyroid, because low thyroid, even sluggish thyroid can have an effect on constipation. Then think of too, that when you mentioned the fact [00:31:30] that you have SIBO, well, I always... SIBO is a small intestinal bacterial infection. Has a lot to do with the gallbladder. So, look for digestive enzymes.

The other thing is, I've flipped SIBO to SIFO, small intestine... It's more of a fungus, rather than a bacteria. Again, you come [00:32:00] back to Candida, yeast, fungal. It's really important not to feed that. To really strip away all your crappy carbohydrates, 100%. I'd be very careful to with any kind of sugar, even fruit for a while. I know fruit, it's not it's not bad for you, the problem is, is if you've got SIFO, you just [00:32:30] want to just lay off for a bit till you get all of that gut fix. But those are things for sure. All the things mentioned are absolutely would be the workup we would have done on it, for sure.

Dr.Martin Jr: All right, go ahead, Brandy.

Brandi: Is it okay to eat baked goods daily, if they're made low carb with almond flour and Swerve sweetener?

Dr.Martin Jr: Again, that's a good question, because [00:33:00] for a lot of people if they're eating low carb at the end of the day, if it's not a... A lot of people eat low carb food, and they're still highly processed foods. You look at the packaging, and it's like, man, it took a lot of chemistry to make that. I think when it takes... When you look at a packaging, and your spell checker goes off for every word that's in there, generally [00:33:30] speaking, I wouldn't necessarily make a habit of eating it all the time, but take one step back. Let's go back one step first. What's the biggest problem that a person is trying to overcome by eating low carb? That's the first and foremost.

We've mentioned this before, right? If you're on the Titanic, and you're about to hit an iceberg, you don't really care what color paint the railings are. You don't care about the carpeting, you don't go change the carpeting [00:34:00] on the Titanic if you're going to hit an iceberg. That's important for people to understand that. A lot of people make the mistake, when they first start saying, "Hey, listen, I'm going to get healthy." Is they change the carpet, instead of turning the direction of the Titanic.

The first thing you have to do is say, "Okay, what's the reason why I'm eating this way, first and foremost?" Are you pre-diabetic and you know it, you got a health issue that you know it, those kind of things. If that's the case, then the big [00:34:30] macro changes you're making by eating low carb, first and foremost are going to help, no question, it's going to help, you're going to feel a lot better. It's going to correct a lot of those issues. But as time goes on, now, you've turned the Titanic, you're not going to hit the iceberg anymore. Now, you're like, all right, I'd like to fix this place up a little bit. I'm going to change the carpeting, I'm going to paint this.

That's when you start to dial things in even tighter afterwards. If a person says, "Listen, I got diabetes, [00:35:00] and I got to eat low carb." If they can eat a low carb baking every day, okay, it's not the end of the world, it really isn't.

But later on that journey, that's when you start to identify and fix those kind of things. Because we don't like to say a food is bad per se, because again, what are you doing it for? I hope that, at least, explains our reasoning, our thought process behind how we ask these questions. So, go [00:35:30] make the big changes, and then we'll dial it in if it isn't working, or if there's another issue, or then we'll dial things in.

I think it's important for people to understand that. Again, eating low carb first and foremost, that's awesome. Then once we get closer to goals or whatever, then we'll start to make those changes. I don't know if you have anything else to add to that, dad?

Dr. Martin Sr.: No, that's what I agree with.

Dr.Martin Jr: All right.

Dr. Martin Sr.: You can have treats too. If you're eating low carb and you can make yourself a [00:36:00] low carb dessert or whatever, and you're using almond flour, certainly better than going to the grocery store and trying to find something there-

Dr.Martin Jr: Our staff-

Dr. Martin Sr.: Low carb bread and a lot of people make that, and I got no problem with that, not if you're on the reset, because that's the 30 day program. But if you're going to make it a lifestyle and you want to have a treat, and you're making whatever, no, I got no problem with that.

Dr.Martin Jr: Our staff makes good, low carb [00:36:30] baked goods, and they bring them in. Make good stuff for sure. Yeah, again, it's a long way to answer the question.

Dr. Martin Sr.: Yep.

Dr.Martin Jr: Go ahead, Brandy.

Brandi: Danielle was wondering how to get rid of skin tags.

Dr. Martin Sr.: Insulin, that's where they come from. Skin tags, there's a sign that you have insulin resistance. It can be very silent, you might not have any other symptoms, other than you've got skin tags. But if you had skin tags, [00:37:00] use generally... If you change your diet and you go low carb and preferably start with a 30 day program, I love that, because that just empties out the liver and resets everything in the body. You're fasting without fasting, that's what I would do. That's what I'd recommend. But certainly, any lifestyle change you make will then get that insulin down. These skin tags, amazing what happens.

Dr.Martin Jr: Yeah, and we see that all the time. Go ahead, Brandy.

Brandi: [00:37:30] Here's a question. Dr. Martin Sr. will love. How many cups of coffee should we drink a day? Also, is it best to grind your own beans?

Dr. Martin Sr.: Well, if you can see my hand? No, there's no science behind that. This is just my preference, okay? But I tell people, look, you know what the vitamin C is in the Martin Clinic, it's coffee. You see Tony Jr, put up your cup, Tony.

Dr.Martin Jr: Yeah, it's-

Dr. Martin Sr.: Tony Jr. don't like coffee, [00:38:00] but there he is.

Dr.Martin Jr: Yeah. Again, we've written about this in the past, there's a lot of research showing that coffee, it's a tremendous antioxidant. It's good for you. It doesn't dehydrate. People always say, if you drink coffee, it doesn't do that. We like coffee. It's very good for you. Listen, if I can't start my day with coffee, and plus, if you're fasting, coffee is tremendous. Coffee is [00:38:30] good for you. We always joke that... We read a lot of studies every day. I always joke that I have coffee studies tagged so that if a coffee study comes out, I get to see it. I have a search thing and it shows up, because I like to read coffee. I like to have confirmation bias. I like to further confirm what I'm doing is good. But coffee is good.

Now, the second part of that question is, how much coffee really depends on the person. [00:39:00] It really depends on the person. Myself I usually have three cups a day is generally what I drink. Dad, I don't know how many you drink a day.

Dr. Martin Sr.: Four.

Dr.Martin Jr: Yeah, you drink four, which is why I came up with that rule, by the way is four cup of coffees because he drinks four cups of coffee a day. There is-

Dr. Martin Sr.: Well, it's going to be five, today.

Dr.Martin Jr: Yeah, well, that's the thing. It is gloomy out today. Today might be a five cup day. But it is those [00:39:30] things. Grounding, is grounding better? Yeah, generally speaking, especially if you know what kind of beans they are, and they're organic beans. Because there are a lot of coffee beans out there that are highly processed and chemicalized and all those kind of things. There are some coffee beans out there that are much better than others.

We drink some here at home that we like, it's an organic blend, and I like it, it tastes good. But if you can ground your own, especially those kind, [00:40:00] generally is better, generally is better. Not always, but generally better. All right, go ahead, Brandy.

Brandi: Marilyn would like to know what can I do to keep my arteries healthy?

Dr. Martin Sr.: Keep your liver healthy. We talked about it, right? It's interesting that what damages the arteries. I love Tony Jr. put out an email that you want to go back and read it about the little endothelial lining, [00:40:30] like the Velcro lining of your blood vessels, right? The thing that damages that is inflammation. Inflammation causes damage to that little Velcro, and now it's not as slippery. When they blame cholesterol, don't blame cholesterol for being at the scene of a heart attack, because, well first of all, most of the time it isn't. But even if it is, it isn't the bad guy.

[00:41:00] The bad guy is inflammation but inflammation is not a Houdini, free radical damage, high circulating insulin affect the lining of the blood vessels. When you don't... That's why we love nitric oxide. If you can elevate your levels of nitric oxide, that opens up your blood vessels, it's good for the lining of your blood vessels, and this is why we [00:41:30] often tout the benefits of a pine bark extract.

Again, what's happened in medicine, in my opinion has been a tragedy, and it's one of the biggest hoaxes in medical history. That is blaming cholesterol for heart disease. Still today, if you went door to door, I know if you did it in our hometown and you went door to door, took 100 doors, [00:42:00] 99 would say cholesterol. What causes damage to blood vessels, heart disease, even cholesterol.

It's almost universal, but it was never true 50 years ago, and it's not true today, and the issue is not cholesterol, it's triglycerides and triglycerides come from sugar, not from fat.

Dr.Maritn Jr: [00:42:30] Yeah, and if you look at specifically how to keep blood vessels healthy, then as my dad mentioned, you got endothelial layer that you have to keep healthy, that's that Teflon like layer that lines all your blood vessels. If there's a problem anywhere along, what, 60,000 miles of blood vessels, then you're going to have a problem. You want to keep that healthy. As my dad mentioned, pine bark extract, tremendous for that, DHA, tremendous [00:43:00] for that.

The other aspect of you want the blood vessels to be properly inflated, thick enough, so that the blood can flow through. That's nitric oxide, that's where B12 comes in, that's where pine bark extract comes in. But I would strongly, again, recommend watching our heart video on our website.

We go through a lot of how to keep your heart healthy, how to keep your blood vessels healthy. We give a ton of information there. Then we have our program in there as well [00:43:30] what we would do for that. I would strongly recommend watching that. All right, go ahead, Brandy. We got about 10 minutes left, Brandy, just to throw out a little air horn, that we have 10 minute left.

Brandi: Brenda would like to know what type of eggs are best.

Dr. Martin Sr.: All eggs are good. If you can get... I always talk about... I think like Tony Jr. said it best. Big thing is if you can eat eggs, [00:44:00] all eggs are good. Some are just better, that's all. Like organic, yes. Free range chickens give you better eggs, okay? Because there's more omega-3 in there in that. But all of them are good because of the... An egg is almost like a perfect food because of its balance between [00:44:30] protein and good fat. It's like a perfect food.

I'm very big on eggs. Some people can't eat them, I feel sorry for them. But they are tremendous-

Dr.Martin Jr: We have a support group-

Dr. Martin Sr.: One of the biggest things in eggs is choline. Choline, it's not found in the plant kingdom, it's found in eggs and meat and cheese, but highly, [00:45:00] highly available in an egg when you eat the yolk, by the way. That is so good for your brain. It's a neural transmitter. Choline is a precursor to your neural transmission. Anyway, yeah, absolutely. But if you can get organic, if you can afford organic eggs, if you can get the... if you got chickens in your backyard, hey, fantastic. [00:45:30] But all legs are good.

Dr.Martin Jr: Yeah. Again, it's funny, A&W has that thing where they brag about it, where it says all the animals are fed plant based diets and eggs, and I'm like, "Well." If you look at what actually chickens eat, it's a lot of bugs, it's a lot of protein. It's a funny thing. But there are [00:46:00] some eggs that are better. But like my dad says, again, the big thing is just eat eggs if you can. I've mentioned this before, I can't, so I get very envious of people who can eat eggs.

As I mentioned, there's a support group for people who can't eat eggs. It's a sad thing. But eggs are so good for you.

Dr. Martin Sr.: EA, Eggs Anonymous.

Dr.Martin Jr: Yeah. All right, go ahead, Brandy.

Brandi: Denise would like to know, how long should I stay on my thyroid [00:46:30] supplements if I had a thyroid problem a year ago?

Dr. Martin Sr.: Well go buy... Denise, go by your symptoms. I could rhyme off 20 symptoms, possible symptoms of thyroid dysfunction. Get our teaching on thyroid because it's very, very important. I go over that. That what I think would encourage you to stay on that formula. Just because your thyroid is [00:47:00] such an important, even though it's rarely ever primary, but it is such an important organ, especially in women, it's so misdiagnosed. Every day, every day, every day we're talking to people that have thyroid issues or thyroid symptoms that they don't even know are coming from the thyroid.

I'm just encouraging you, Denise, that [00:47:30] formula, in my opinion is... You know what, Tony Jr. always said it, we have to get results. If we don't get results in the clinic, you're in trouble. We always built our reputation on our results. Those formulas, I would tell them, I don't know what you're using, but I know what we need, and that was me with [00:48:00] you in mind, because we were... People ask me about different things every day and I go, "Well, I tried that, it wasn't getting the results, and this is why I recommend." I don't mind tooting our horn because it works. I would just say, Denise, you're not going to hurt yourself by taking it.

I have thousands of people taking it on a daily basis, and it is just tremendous to support [00:48:30] that thyroid. Thyroid works on nutrition [inaudible 00:48:35] and nutrients. That's a big problem in our society today.

Dr.Martin Jr: All right, go ahead, Brandy.

Brandi: Anonymous is wondering what to do with a loved one that you suspect may be displaying signs of dementia or some type of confusion?

Dr. Martin Sr.: Well, it's always best, and I just quickly, always best if you [00:49:00] can get at it early. There's a fire that's been going on in that brain for a while before their symptoms. But the best thing you can do is, for my... I like the combination of high DHA oil and curcumin. The studies are excellent on what they do for the brain. I would be on a probiotic again, because of the gut-brain connection [00:49:30] and then diet. If you can reverse the diet and get the sugar out of the brain, there's nothing that damages the memory center of the brain more than sugar does.

Dr.Martin Jr: Yeah, and there's not really much that will show up in a blood test necessarily for the beginning of dementia. That's the thing, there's no real blood test to detect it. It's not like there might be nothing that shows up in there. Usually, the people that are around somebody know when it's happening, they know when changes are occurring, and they see the [00:50:00] difference. People around them see the difference?

I would do what we call an emergency intervention meaning. This is where you definitely clean up a diet, bring that high circulating insulin down. High DHA, curcumin like my dad says high B12, high vitamin D, and pine bark extract. That's what we would do, I know that's what I would do. [00:50:30] Then at the same time, I would strongly encourage you to watch that age proof your brain training. We talk about this exactly, but that's where I would go right off the bat. All right, go ahead, Brandy, we have time for one more question?

Brandi: Sari would like to know what is the cause of floaters in the eyes?

Dr. Martin Sr.: Microcirculation. If you... I remember, what's that little instrument called, Tony, looking in the eyes? [00:51:00] I forget. Whatever it is, when the optometrist or the ophthalmologist or even your family doctor might just have a look in the eye. You know what they're looking at? They're looking at a few things. But the basic things you see is blood supply. Those little caterpillars in the back of the eyes. It looks like the 401, the 407, and the Queen's Way and whatever else in Toronto there, highways. That's what it looks like in the back of the eye.

Well, microcirculation. [00:51:30] Floaters in the eye usually generally are a problem with microcirculation, because that's the first thing that happens. Sari, one of the things that I'm so huge on getting the sugar content out of the person, because sugar destroys capillaries for all the reasons that we talked about earlier in heart disease and the Teflon and whatever. Even in the little capillaries, [00:52:00] those are the first things that go in microcirculation. They affect the eyes.

We're big on pine bark extract, we're big on high DHA oil for the blood vessels and fix the microcirculation, you usually fix the floaters.

Dr.Martin Jr: Yeah, exactly. The eyes are a biomarker of metabolic health for 99% of time. When somebody starts to get glaucoma or age related macular [00:52:30] degeneration, or floaters, that is an indication of metabolic health. We would look at eye health as simply an extension of metabolic health, blood vessel health, and we would treat it accordingly. That's how we would approach that.

All right, well, we're out of time. Again, we thank you. There's a lot of people on here, we thank everybody for joining us on such a short notice. It's been a few weeks since we've done one of these so we were really hoping to do one this week. As we mentioned earlier, [00:53:00] we were able to jump on it today and do it. We're hoping to get back to a normal schedule again next week. Summer's a little tough for my dad and I to connect at the same time. But again, we appreciate everybody that joined us. Awesome questions. Dad, you're doing a Facebook Live tomorrow morning again?

Dr. Martin Sr.: Yes.

Dr.Martin Jr: You'll be going through some more of these questions here-

Dr. Martin Sr.: Friday, we have Question and Answer Friday.

Dr.Martin Jr: Oh, yeah, that's right. See, I already thought tomorrow's Friday. Listen, everybody's going through this, but through this whole pandemic [00:53:30] thing, I have no idea what day of the week it is. It is so confusing. I mess up on my [inaudible 00:53:39] all the time. I legitimately thought it was Thursday today. It's Wednesday, so, I guess, Friday, you'll be doing a live Q&A, and then you'll answer some of the questions that are left over. Again, we'll do some more next week. We couldn't get to all the questions. But again, hey, everyone, thanks for joining us. It was fun. We had a blast, and we'll do this again shortly. Thanks. Have a great day.
