Announcer: You're listening to The Doctor is In podcast brought to you by martinclinic.com. During the episode, the doctors share a lot of information. As awesome as the info may be, it is not intended to diagnose, cure, treat, or prevent any disease. It's strictly for informational purposes.
Dr.Martin: Well, good morning everyone. A couple of youth studies came out last week on these oils. Bad oils. I get asked this question I bet you daily, what should [00:00:30] I cook with? What are good oils? Bad oils? And almost like sugar, these oils, certain oils are terrible for you and the studies are actually showing exactly that. Couple of studies came out on oils, soybean oil, canola oil. These are bad oils. [00:01:00] Because they sound natural, like canola oil and soybean oil. They sound natural, but they're chemically produced. They're really produced in a vat and they're very inexpensive. The problem with that, bad oils. Let me give you a two studies that came out in the last week and then I'll talk a little bit about fat. Good oils. [00:01:30] You need good fat, but this is not good fat.
Dr.Martin: And soybean oil, canola oil, two studies came out, one of them on the brain and how they affect the brain. There's a huge link now to these oils. Look, the reason that they get a lot of ink positively, and it started [00:02:00] in the 19, it started with Crisco, so you're going to go back to the 1950s. Crisco and it was, it sounded good. Don't use butter and don't use lard, use Crisco. And it started with that. And then all these canola oils and soybean oils and they were put into margarine and I'll give you a list [00:02:30] of foods and then I'll talk to you about the two study. I just looked up some of the foods that these things are found in. Potato chips, ladies, tortillas, salad dressing, chicken and salad, chicken and salad.
Dr.Martin: And you're taking canola oil unless you're making your own dressing. You make dressing, make it with balsamic vinegar and olive oil. That's good oil, [00:03:00] olive oil. I'll tell you why in a minute. Baby formulas, pastries, cereals, baby cereals and adult cereals, margarine, frozen foods, soy beverages, frozen yogurt, soups, sauces, peanut butter, but not natural. The one with icing sugar has oil in it. Baking mixes, barbecue sauces. [00:03:30] Those are just some of them. Bagels and muffins. Unless you make them, have all these things. Now you're getting a double whamo, you're getting a double whamo because you know me, I always talk about insulin and insulin is a big, big issue and sugars, when you're eating bread, pasta, rice, cereal, sugar, pastries, that kind of thing, you're getting lots of carbs already and then you get a bad oil that makes most of those crappy carbohydrates.
Dr.Martin: [00:04:00] You're getting an oil that is very high in Omega-6 compared to Omega-3. You see, the ratio has changed. You go way back, go 50, 60 years ago, the ratio between Omega-3 and Omega-6 was probably, one to one or two to one for Omega-6 and that's all right. Your body can handle that. The problem is, is when that ratio is now [00:04:30] some are saying 18 to one, 20 to one, 30 to one because we, I was saying to somebody in the office the other day, we live, most people go back a 100 years. They didn't have the middle aisles of the grocery stores, but today the food industry has, they fill the middle aisles of the grocery stores and by and large, by and large, they're all oils from either [00:05:00] soy or from canola.
Dr.Martin: And those are made in the lab folks. Those are not natural oils. They are, forget the genetically modified, but these are highly industrialized. I always tell people, you can run your car on that kind of oil. That's synthetic oil. It's good for your car, it's not good for you. Because your body thrives with [00:05:30] healthy fat, saturated fat. See, where this thing got all it's ink is if you take soybean oil and you take canola oil or rape seed oil, what that is, is it's an unsaturated fat. You can imagine medicine, the food industry, well because fat makes you fat in their minds and fat is bad for you and fat, all they can see is when they look at [00:06:00] a blood vessel and they saw cholesterol in there, they said, "Well that comes from fat." It doesn't. Comes from sugar, but they changed the fat.
Dr.Martin: Listen to this study, this came out last week and I flagged it soon as I saw it. Because it was just, it was more of an observation study that looked at the history of these things of heart disease. It looked at the history [00:06:30] of heart disease and in relationship to fat that we were consuming. Now listen to this, I'll read it to you. In 1910, heart disease mortality was 10%. 10% of the population that died, died of a heart attack. That's in 1910. That wasn't a big killer. I've told you guys this in the past, I tell you again, even when in the 1950s, [00:07:00] heart disease wasn't the major killer. People didn't die of heart disease near as much as they died today. And again, I don't want to get too negative, but we spend kazillions of dollars on heart disease, which is still the number one killer in society today. And we're not even making a stinking dent in it. Because we're looking at it upside down.
Dr.Martin: In 1910, it was 10% of the population died. Well, you get [00:07:30] older, your heart's going to fail eventually. People die of course, but only 10% in the 1910 they died of infection, people. And modern medicine did some wonderful things. They found antibiotics. Yay. Seriously. It can save your life. Absolutely. 100%. Love those things. When they discovered insulin, wasn't that [00:08:00] a wonderful thing? Medicine did. Pharmaceutical companies did. I got no problem with that. Hallelujah. They found these things. But in 1910, 10% of the population died of heart disease. You know what it is today? 40% of the population here in 2020, we just got into 2020 so the stats are from 2019. But in 2019, 40% of the population [00:08:30] dies from heart disease and it's almost the other 40 are dying from cancer.
Dr.Martin: But let me just say this, in 1910 when they're just looking back and they said, here it is. In 1910 when heart disease mortality was 10%, 80% of the oils used was lard. It's just a fact. People used lard. They cooked with lard. Do you think that people didn't make cakes in [00:09:00] 1910? Or pies? Of course they did. I always tell my grandchildren, I said, "Grandpa had ice cream too you know when I was a kid." They look at me, I'm ancient. But we had ice cream. We had pies and cakes too. But it was made from a different oil. It was made with lard or butter. Today, it's made up of manufactured [00:09:30] oil. Listen to this, in 1910 heart disease mortality was 10% and it's not just fat and I'll talk to you about this in a second.
Dr.Martin: 80% of the oil used was lard. That's what people mostly cooked with. In 2019, 40% heart mortality and 90%, listen to what I'm going to say, 90% of oil is either canola [00:10:00] or soybean oil, seed oils, vegetable oils. It all sounds good, doesn't it? Vegetables. Doc, what do you got against vegetables? I don't but I got problems with vegetable oils. They are highly industrialized. Like I said, you could run your car. Isn't this an interesting observation that was done? Just observation. What's the correlation? [00:10:30] Well, we have a lot more heart disease today in spite of all the money we're spending. And like I said to you last week on a previous podcast, our previous video, I talked to you about the fact that we live in a day and age where you would think there would be huge advancements in medicine and some of them are, like I said, when you look at [00:11:00] insulin, you can get rid of diabetes, but in the meantime, insulin and one of the greatest discoveries ever in the history of medicine was antibiotics.
Dr.Martin: Wonderful thing. Wonderful thing. But guys, they only dent. And this is what I talked to you about last week. The only dent really, if you look at statistic wise in the 1970s and eighties there was a dent in cancer. [00:11:30] Cancer rates went down and heart disease rates went down temporarily to come back up now. They were coming down in the 70s and eighties not because we switched oils guys, because people stopped smoking. They stopped smoking and so when they stopped smoking there was less cancer and less heart disease. Temporarily. Now it's by back. I'm back because heart disease is [00:12:00] back and so is cancer. So is cancer. It's back with a vengeance and medicine yeah, maybe mortality wise, they're trying to, they're better probably at what they were doing in terms of keeping people alive, but they're not stopping cancer. They're not stopping heart disease. They're not stopping because they got it wrong guys.
Dr.Martin: They got it wrong. Even today, if you went door to door [00:12:30] in my hometown, if you went door to door and said, "What would you do? What would be the best thing you could do to cut heart disease down?" They would tell you, "Well, don't eat too much fat and get your cholesterol down." People still lose their minds when I talked to them about eating eggs, meat and cheese, especially people of my generation. They go insane. What? My cholesterol [00:13:00] is going to go up. I'm going to have high cholesterol. That's a good thing. You need high cholesterol. You can't live without cholesterol. I get it asked every day, I'm getting asked again today. I got a couple of emails. People asking me, "Well, what about my LDL? And what about my doctor? He doesn't want me to do the reset." And blah, blah, blah, blah, blah. I know. I get it. But if you go door to door, yeah, maybe [00:13:30] I better limit my eggs, I better limit my meat, especially red meat. And the fat. Look at the fat on that piece of meat.
Dr.Martin: That's the best thing for you. Eat the fat of meat. It's the best thing for you guys. Your brain is made up of fat. It don't clog your arteries. And I'll teach it till the cows come home. Get your triglycerides [00:14:00] down. TG, TG, thank God, TG, triglycerides, that's bad. Why are they bad? Because they're fat balls in your blood, not cholesterol. As a matter of fact, you want to have high cholesterol, high HDL and LDL. I don't care. You can ask me, but I'm going to give you the same [00:14:30] answer every time. Doc, my total cholesterol. Who cares? It was made up by the pharmaceutical industry to sell statin drugs. LDL, statin drugs, Lipitor, the number one selling drug of all time. It was never true. Imagine the number one, even ahead of antibiotics, more sales than ever.
Dr.Martin: The Wayne Gretzky, the number one [00:15:00] of all time, was based on a lie. Imagine that. And you know what? If I told you this before, but I'm going to say it again. In England they actually in the House of Commons, they had a vote. Thankfully it was rejected, but they were going to put statin drugs in the drinking water. If you let some cardiologists, they would put statin drugs in drinking water so that you'd have no choice but [00:15:30] to take it because they believe in their minds that cholesterol is the boogeyman. Well, there are bad fats and we just talked about them. Canola, bad fat. And they're hidden. They're hidden in foods that I mentioned to you. If you go in the middle of your crackers and your cookies and your things, all those, those things are made up of vegetable oils. You know, mommy didn't make them with the butter.
Dr.Martin: [00:16:00] They're made by the food industry. It's very inexpensive for them. They can make it in vats. It's highly oxidized. It's so dangerous this oil. Can you imagine 1910, 10%. What were they doing right in 1910 that the biggest killer wasn't the biggest? The biggest killer was infection and not heart. What were they doing [00:16:30] right? They were using lard. Do you know what lard is? Isn't it made from bacon fat? Oh Dr. Martin bacon? I got asked a question this morning. Bacon, are you sure? They think I, they think I'm crazy. [00:17:00] Maybe I am. I admit it. I get it guys. I can understand because you've been drilled from the day almost you're born. Imagine putting that stuff in the baby cereal? It's craziness. But the world you see, the world loves following lies in my opinion. They like it because you just got to say something long enough. You think that people that [00:17:30] are in marketing 101 don't understand how to get to your mind?
Dr.Martin: They just say it, say it, say it, say it. Eat our cereal, eat our cereal, eat our cereal. Don't eat bacon and eggs. Don't eat bacon and eggs. Eat margarine. Don't have butter. Guys, my generation and my parents, they went for it like a fish, hook, line and sinker they went for it. And the pharmaceutical [00:18:00] industry and the food industry, they made kazillions of dollars because of it. And I'm not even talking to you about sugar. How they changed sugar in the 1970s. Like I said, I had ice cream when I was a kid. I had cookies. I eat that stuff.
Dr.Martin: By the way, I never had pizza as a kid. Put your hand up if you're my age, I'm 68. [00:18:30] I never had pizza till I was about, I remember the first pizzeria that ever came into my hometown. I was probably 16 or 17 when I had my first slice of pizza. I never saw pizza as a kid, go into the freezer section today and it's, there's hundreds of different kinds of pizzas and by the way guys, unless you make the pizza, guess what oil they use? Vegetable oil. It's even in the sauces, the tomato sauce. [00:19:00] They put vegetable oil in that. It's cheap.
Dr.Martin: Isn't it crazy? The world we live in. And guys, I know you guys. It's not popular what I'm saying. Gets me into trouble. But I got the can't help its. I got to tell you. I see these studies and I go because, and I'm going to tell you the second study. Because I just told you about heart disease, but let me give you another one. Bad oils, this is study [00:19:30] number two, came out last week. Bad oil, soy bean, canola oil are low in saturated fat, but they cause genetic changes in the brain. Well, I'll tell you where I know they also cause big problems is in the gut, but they're showing it causes a genetic changes in the brain that there's a huge link to this and Alzheimer's and autism and these oils. Kids are the canary in the coal mine and you know me, [00:20:00] sugar too because they changed the sugar. Sugar is not even sugar and plus we're eating 200 pounds of sugar a year.
Dr.Martin: We're consuming this oil. It's in almost everything to the ratio of 20, 30 to one they're saying between Omega. This gives you Omega-6 versus Omega-3. Omega-3 are your good oils found in where? Where do you get Omega-3? You guys know this. Fish, steak. [00:20:30] Do you know that a steak has oil? Yeah. The cow eats grass. Steak has more Omega-3 than fish does. I had my fish this morning in a capsule. I'm very big on fish oils, but I'm bigger on steak guys. This is why eggs, meat and cheese on the reset. But listen to this [00:21:00] study, genetically changes the brain. Your brain was never meant for that oil. It's not natural. It sounds natural. Dr. Martin, vegetable oils. Yeah, but they're highly industrialized and the whole world went crazy after Crisco. The Count of Monte Crisco. It was Cristo, not Crico.
Dr.Martin: No, but seriously, [00:21:30] so here we have an enormous problem in our society today. We got heart disease. We got kids with autism. I tell you, you look in my textbooks in the 1970s, I graduated in 1974 guys, do you know what? I never, never, never, never heard of autism till about 1979 I think is the first time I ever heard about autism. I didn't even know it existed. What's autism? I'm not saying there was never [00:22:00] an autistic child back then, but come on guys. We have an epidemic today. What is it? One out of 50 kids now today or less than that are born autistic. They got all sorts of cognitive issues and ADD and ADHD and it's sugar and oils, guys. Sugar and oil, sugar and oils. What's a healthy oil? Butter. Doc, what should I cook with? Butter. Go back to lard. You [00:22:30] can cook with a fruit oil. What's a fruit oil that you could cook with? Avocado. Yeah. Avocado's a good oil to cook with. It is a fruit. What's a good fruit oil to cook with? It's olive oil. Olive is a fruit.
Dr.Martin: You don't put it in a fruit salad though. Olives are fruits, they're not vegetables. But anyway, olive [00:23:00] oil is great. Make sure it's extra virgin, cold pressed olive oil, high, high smoke point. It's very good for you. Butter's the best. Lard is the best. Those are good oils. They're good for you. And by the way, just repetition, what is the same oil? What is the name of the acid that is found in olive oil and bacon? It's actually [00:23:30] a good acid so what is it? Now what's the name of the acid that's in olive oil and coconut? Coconut's very good, by the way. Wasn't the oil I was thinking of by the way, but coconut is very good oil to cook with. Oleic acid. That's why I tell you people to eat bacon. I say, "Well, do you think olive oil is good for?" "Oh yes, olive oil is tremendous for me." And it is. It is. You can drink [00:24:00] olive oil. It's so good for you. It's a healthy fat, but it has the same oleic acid as bacon does. Bacon has healthy fat.
Dr.Martin: Enjoy. Enjoy your bacon, enjoy your olive oil. It's a great oil to cook with. It is. Doesn't denature. And the problem is with these vegetable oils, when you cook them up, they denature. They oxidize [00:24:30] very, very rapidly. Don't ever use that stuff for cooking. It's not good. It's not good for you. Makes it worse. It makes it worse because it denatures and it oxidizes rapidly. Do you know that animal fat does not oxidize? You can't turn it rancid. It's good for you. You need that. Imagine those two studies. Incredible, isn't it? When you think about it.
Announcer: [00:25:00] You've reached the end of another Doctor is In podcast with your hosts, Dr. Martin Jr. and Sr. Be sure to catch our next episode and thanks for listening.
