Announcer: You're listening to The Doctor Is In Podcast, brought to you by MartinClinic.com. During the episode, the doctors share a lot of information. As awesome as the info may be, it is not intended to diagnose, cure, treat, or prevent any disease. It's strictly for informational purposes.
Dr. Martin: Well, good morning, everyone. How are you? And once again, welcome to another Facebook Live this morning to be a podcast. The Doctor is In, so hope you're having a great start to your day.
Okay, so yesterday we looked and we just started because there's so much today on anti-aging. It's a big, big business today, isn't it? I don't know any dermatologist that hasn't got into the anti-aging business. They've turned their clinics, okay, not only looking at skin diseases, they're dermatologists, but they're in the anti-aging business, okay?
And it's a big business because people will do just about anything to stay young. And sometimes, the way I look at it, you got to work inside out, okay? Because if you just look at your skin, your skin is your largest organ and very visible. But the way to influence your skin, not that, look, you can serums and, you know, things like that can be helpful.
But again, you can't out supplement a bad diet. And food is the key. And yesterday we talked about what glycation is. Glycation is damage to the collagen with sugar, glycation.
And so, if you cut down, cut out sugar, that's going to be very helpful. And not only for anti-aging, but we know, I put this out this morning on our private Facebook group. Let me see if I can get it. The number one cause of heart disease, okay, ten times anything else, is diabetes.
So, if you're a diabetic, you're ten times more likely to have heart disease, heart attack, stroke, diabetes. Well, you guys understand that, but the world out there doesn't understand that. The world out there blames cholesterol for heart disease. They still do.
They don't talk about a diabetic, but a diabetic is ten times more likely. Cholesterol is at the bottom of the scale on what causes heart disease. But because they have a medication for it, medicine got hijacked on cholesterol. Big pharma, you think they're stupid?
They still do the majority of the teaching in medical school, pharmaceutical companies. So, statin drugs, the number one seller of all time, you think the sales have gone down? Not much, not much. They look at a chart, and I posted it on the Martin Clinic site.
I will publish it on the private Facebook group. Many of you might have seen it already, that chart. And again, why am I talking about them? Well, anti-aging, the industry, okay?
Not talking about heart disease, but heart disease will kill you. And if you want to anti-age, if you really want to be into anti-aging, you don't want your heart aging, but there's nothing that will age your heart more than sugar. Sugar destroys your blood vessels. I try and repeat that.
I'm going to, you know, repetition, that's how I learn. There's nothing you can do that would be more powerful than you cutting out sugar in your diet. Okay? Did I say that was easy?
No, it's not. But the stats are overwhelming. A diabetic, and it ain't even close, 10 times compared to the general population, 10 times more likely to have heart disease than the average person in society. Well, what is diabetes, guys?
What is it? It's sugar left unattended in blood vessels. That's what diabetes is. It's sugar left unattended because insulin is no longer working.
And what do we teach about diabetes? It's the last thing to happen. Not the first, the last, because your body is dedicated. You are fearfully and wonderfully made.
Your body is super intelligent, and your body knows sugar can't stay in the bloodstream. It's in a no parking zone. So when you hear moderation, that was made up to you by Coca-Cola and Pepsi-Cola. Moderation.
The food industry. And man, oh man, had they ever duped the world. Holy smokes, guys. Anyway, so yesterday we talked about that.
Cutting back on sugar. One of the best things you can do anti-aging, even for your skin. Work inside out. We talked about oxidation.
Glycation, oxidation. So protect yourself. Why do I like antioxidants? Why do I like coffee?
Powerful antioxidant. Okay? Rust proofing. That's what it does.
You want that. Okay? We talked about mitochondrial health yesterday. Eat steak, eggs, and good dairy too.
But you get CoQ10 only in the animal kingdom. Your heart needs steak. Your heart hates bread, loves steak. Okay?
But 99% of all breads are just sugar molecules holding hands. Okay? So you want mitochondrial health. This is one of the reasons that we talk about move.
Okay? I gave you this last week again because I got it right up here on my bulletin board right in front of me. I look at this pretty well every day because I said it my desk and it says three things worse than smoking. Okay?
All cause mortality. Three things worse, they said. Okay? Inactivity.
Anti-aging. Stay active. And in that activity, the best thing in the research now is overwhelming, guys. It's overwhelming.
You know what it is? Get strong. You want to walk? Walk.
And I mean it. I love walking. I walk every day. Move.
Yes. But get strong. Get stronger than you are. Get stronger.
Work on that. Muscle. The more we study muscle, one of the worst things that will aid you, listen to what I'm going to say now, one of the worst things that will aid you is osteoporosis. Osteoporosis is a big issue in people.
But you know what causes the vast majority of osteoporosis? Sarcopenia. You know what sarcopenia is? Lack of muscle.
Lack of muscle. It's funny how they compared, you know, the Japanese wrestlers, what do you call them? Sumo wrestlers or whatever they're called, right? They're obese, but they're strong.
And that's amazing how that helps them with blood sugar and everything else because of muscle. Muscles, they sweep and absorb sugar out of your bloodstream. The more muscle you have, the better it is for your endocrine health. But the more muscle you have, the better it is for your bones.
I've been teaching that for 50 years because women would come to me and, Doc, they got medication for osteoporosis. It doesn't work. They're looking for love in all the wrong places. What makes your bone strong is muscle.
Muscle anchors into your bone. And sarcopenia is a huge issue. And that, my friend, will age you big time. Having brittle bones, osteopenia, osteoporosis.
And the antidote to that is muscle. And so we talk about it all the time, get stronger. You don't have to be Arnold Schwarzenegger. I'm not talking about that.
But this is proven in anti-aging. Can you get off the floor on your own? Not easy. You get to my age, that ain't easy.
Okay? Go to a senior home. See how they get out of a chair. Not easy for most of them.
Very difficult task. That, my friend, is aging on steroids. And by the way, one of the things that kills people, they don't even think about this so much, when you get older, are falls. You fall down, break a hip.
It can be usually the beginning of the end for people. Right? So think about that. Muscle.
You have what we call proprioception muscles. And they help with your balance. They help with that. And they help you to stabilize when you sort of trip.
Like I watched someone the other day, I watched a senior almost fall. And they were leaning forward. They tripped. And they leaned forward.
And I wasn't close enough to help them. But I watched it. And they couldn't get their balance. And then finally someone grabbed them because they would have fell probably flat on their face.
They were falling forward. You know what that is, guys? That's what they call proprioception. It's muscles when they're stronger.
They stabilize you. They anchor you. So you want to do anti-aging. One of the best things you can do is just to get stronger.
Okay? Can you get out of a chair? You know, things young people take for granted. They don't even think about.
Okay? I used to have a Corvette. Okay? In 1976, I had a Corvette.
It's this high, like about six inches off the ground. Okay? And I always wanted a Corvette. I got a Corvette.
And then I cured myself of Corvettes by having one. I never wanted another one. But one of the issues is always funny. Okay?
Is trying to get in it and trying to get out of it. Okay? My son, he had a sports car. Okay?
And I said, this ain't senior friendly. Let me tell you that. Because it's like a few inches off the ground and you got to land in that seat getting in. So you just sort of drop.
But the worst thing is, it's trying to get out of it. You open the door and you go, how am I going to get out of here? And I said, I'm going to get out of here. And I said, and you go, how am I going to get out of here?
And young people, they don't think about that. But old people sure do. But the key is muscle. The key is muscle.
And the vast majority of seniors, they don't have that. That's a death knell for seniors. Okay? You want to go anti-aging?
Get strong. Get strong. Okay? That's really important.
So you need mitochondrial health. And yesterday I mentioned something. And I know that this is not popular. I know this is going against the grain.
I know that a lot of people think I'm a kook. Quack, quack, quack. But I want you to keep your cholesterol high, especially as you get older. You need cholesterol.
Your brain needs it. Your eyeballs need it. And by the way, you look at aging, ice, they give you a window into aging. Cataracts.
That's glycation of the eyeballs. Oxidation. Well, think about it. One of the worst things for eyes is what they call diabetic retinopathy.
Sugar. Okay. Oh, by the way, let's do this one because it's very important for aging. Okay?
Because you know me and I know that you think about this all the time. Dr. Martin, how do I keep my brain from aging as much as I can? Well, food, eggs, meat and cheese.
Your brain loves it. Full of cholesterol, full of healthy fat. Someone calls you fathead. Take it as a compliment.
DHA, absolutely. But one of the things that you need to do so that your brain doesn't age is you need to emphasize sleep. And we teach this here. I've been teaching you this for many, many years.
It's called autophagy. What? Autophagy. When you sleep, not sedated.
When you sleep, your self-cleaning oven. Autophagy. That's when it works. And by the way, there was a new study out.
Let me give it to you now because this is one of the studies I've wanted to bring out. Okay? Autophagy. Afternoon nap can restore brain neuroplasty.
Okay? That's as anti-aging as you can get in the brain. An afternoon nap can restore brain neuroplasty. See, what a lot of people don't do.
I used to have patients tell me this. I said, how you sleeping? Bad. Okay.
I said, can you sleep during the day? Yes. But I don't do it. Why?
Well, because I won't sleep at night. I said, you don't sleep at night anyways. Isn't that what you told me? I don't sleep at night.
Well, I said, get an afternoon nap. Well, I won't sleep at night. I heard that a lot of times in my office. Okay.
Afternoon nap, the self-cleaning oven turns on. You get autophagy. The cleaning out of the debris in your brain, which is one of the biggest factors in aging the brain. So you need to emphasize sleep.
I think I have it right here on my t-shirt. Hold on a minute. Sun, steak, steel and sleep. Okay.
Sleep and practice. You don't have that book. You need to get that book. Sun, steak, steel and sleep.
Emphasize it. Make it a science for you. A lot of people have trouble with sleep. The latest statistic I read on it was somewhere 70, 75% of people, they don't get into a good REM sleep.
Their self-cleaning oven doesn't get turned on. Or they medicate. I'm telling you, don't fool yourself. Medication to put you to sleep is sedation.
And you will not get into the autophagy. It doesn't work that way. You can't sedate the brain. Fill your brain with fat.
What fat in your brain, what kind of fat is in the brain? DHA. Why do I love DHA? Why do I love it?
I didn't even finish the three things. Where's my little thing? Right under my bulletin board. What's worse than smoking?
I only gave you inactivity because I wanted to talk about muscle. But the other one is a lack of omega-3, vitamin D, worse than smoking, and a lack of vitamin D. The sun. Is there anything better than the sun?
The sun is out today. Beautiful. It's all positive. Oh, you know when man thinks they're smarter than God?
When they told people to get out of the sun. Get out of the sun, it gives you cancer. It'll age you. Get out of the sun.
And a whole generation or two, they bought it. They lather themselves up. If I got to get in the sun, I am going to lather myself up and cover up. If I go to the beach in Florida and I watch people using cancer-promoting sunscreen, even the FDA said it.
The FDA pulled about 150 products off the shelf. They've got carcinogens. Add sunscreen to skin, add heat, and you got problems. That gets right into your bloodstream.
You might as well drink it. You might as well drink the sunscreen. What difference does it make? If you put it on your skin and add heat, guess what?
It goes right into your bloodstream. You might as well use a patch. We got duped. And people, they take it.
Well, my doctor said it must be true. Brought to you by, I said this on my radio show 25 years ago, 30 years ago. Brought to you by Johnson & Johnson, the number one selling pharmaceutical company of sunscreens. And they paid out billions of dollars in lawsuits.
And then they paid out billions of dollars too for their baby powder. Remember Johnson & Johnson baby powder and you powder up the bum bum of those little kids? Oh, anyway, I know I get excited guys, but I can't help myself. Afternoon nap restores brain neuroplasticity.
So you want to do anti-aging, you cut down on that sugar. Get stronger. Get your cholesterol up. Eat eggs, meat, and cheese.
You'll thank me later. Your body needs fat. Watch for glycation and oxidation. That's anti-aging.
Prioritize sleep. Prioritize no fun under the sun when people don't sleep well. I get that. I understand that.
I heard it in my office for 50 years. Do everything you can except sedate. Don't sedate. It don't work.
Oh, you'll get knocked out already. I had people come into my office. I don't know how many thousands over the years and said, doc, if I don't take a sleeping pill, I don't sleep. I said, you're not sleeping.
You're sedated. There's a big difference between that. Don't fool yourself. This is bad for your brain, guys.
This is bad for your brain. Your brain's not detoxing. You have a self-cleaning oven. Call your glymphatic system in your brain.
That is not doing it. It's not working when you sedate. Don't sedate. You go to the hospital for sedation before a surgery and you wake up.
Oh, after surgery, I wake up. Oh, do I ever feel good? I never had such a good sleep as when I was getting an operation done with sedation. Are you kidding me?
Okay, guys, love you dearly and sincerely, and you're the best audience in the world. I know that for a fact. You're the smartest audience in the world. I know that for a fact. Okay? That's my audience.
Oh, tomorrow's Q&A. Send your questions in not too late. Love you. Talk to you soon.
