1908. Q&A with Dr. Martin

Dr. Martin answers questions sent in by our listeners in today's episode.

TRANSCRIPT OF TODAY'S EPISODE

Announcer:  You're listening to The Doctor Is In Podcast, brought to you by MartinClinic.com. During the episode, the doctors share a lot of information. As awesome as the info may be, it is not intended to diagnose, cure, treat, or prevent any disease. It's strictly for informational purposes.

Dr. Martin:  Well, good morning, everyone. Once again, welcome to another Facebook Live This Morning to be a podcast the Doctor Is In. We appreciate you, big time, very big time. Okay, Monique is asking a question this morning.

I hope you're listening, Monique, this morning. You keep saying, Monique, you're right. I keep saying things over and over again. I am a repetition guy.

I learn by repetition. I want my audience to learn by repetition. Now, what do I keep saying? If our liver is not fat, it's in good health.

Yeah, if it's not full of fat, what do I call your liver? The Costco parking lot. Because if you're a carbaholic, if you're a carbaholic, your liver is going to be full of fat. If you drink fructose, your liver is going to be full of fat.

So you're right. I do say that all the time. Your triglycerides are good, good for you. Okay?

She burps after meals and you think your liver is not happy. I disagree with that. If you're eating right, Monique, your liver is empty. I mean, you can go find out.

Get an ultrasound, get liver enzymes test done. But burping is not your liver. It may be your gallbladder. Okay?

And bile in your gallbladder comes from your liver. Your liver manufactures bile. Okay? But it's not your liver that's giving you burping.

Far more would be your stomach. Not enough acidity in it. And the body's trying to make more. You might have a condition that we call SEPO, small intestine fungal overgrowth.

That can give you bloating, burping, feeling of unwellness after you eat. But I wouldn't blame your liver for that. I remember when I was younger, you remember Carter's Little Liver Pills? I remember that even as a young lad.

Carter's Little Liver Pills. And that was for digestion. Well, I wouldn't aim at the liver. Not that I don't think the liver is important.

But one of the ways, and if you could send to me Martin Clinic, Monique, your triglycerides look like they're fantastic at 75.75 in Canada. What is your HDL? If that's good, your liver is not full of fat. So it's not your liver giving you digestive issues.

Okay? Could be other things. You got a gallbladder. Could be a gallbladder.

Okay, Linda. I listened to a recent podcast of Dr. Martin's. You're smart.

Where he reviewed a study on brain degeneration, it said that the brain starts shrinking at 5.5 A1C. Do I ever love A1C as a test? Right? Get me your A1C.

I love A1C. I've been talking about that test for years. And doctors don't know how to interpret it because they use that as a test for diabetes. No, you can know years ahead of time that you're on the Titanic by looking at your A1C.

And if it's over 5.4, you and carbs don't get along. So the question that Linda is asking, if you bring your numbers down, can your brain regenerate? Yes. Yes, it can regenerate.

Isn't that wonderful? Your brain regenerates. Your liver regenerates. Isn't that good?

Yeah. Your brain will regenerate. There's nothing more destructive to the brain than having high blood sugar. Sugar is destructive.

Why? Because it's in a no parking zone. If it's in your blood vessels and it's not being taken out properly by insulin, and you can tell that by your A1C, you know what? Sugar destroys if it's left unattended.

And I always use this. If you don't believe me, ask a diabetic. The brain, Alzheimer's, is type 3 diabetes. Sugar in the brain, too much.

So yes, your brain regenerates. I like regenerating the brain with diet, eggs, meat, and cheese. Good for the brain. Lower the carbs.

Lower the sugars. DHA. Navitol crosses the blood-brain barrier. Pine bark extract.

Okay. Thank you for the question. That was Linda. Man, Linda.

We love Linda's. Listen, Linda. Listen. Okay, Judy.

I have osteopenia and I found two podcasts. Just two podcasts. Well, I've talked about osteoporosis and osteopenia, but they might not have been the headlines of the podcast. Okay?

And a lot of times I do osteoporosis on Q&A Fridays. So, Judy, you're right. Okay? Because there's a couple of podcasts where I might have let off on osteopenia or osteoporosis, but often it came in the form of a Q&A Friday or a Q&A Monday.

And you don't get all the headlines of Q&A. Now, let me come back to osteopenia, which is a precursor to osteoporosis. Okay? The thinning of bone.

Okay? The thinning of bone. And guys, let me tell you this. Bone.

You want strong bones? Sun, steak, and steel. Vitamin D. Vitamin D.

The sun. Your bones have antennas looking for sunlight. Not just on your skin. Your bones.

That's why even a doctor, even a doctor that know nothing about vitamins might even tell you to take vitamin D if you have osteopenia. But here's what they usually make a big mistake is. Well, take vitamin D and calcium. Well, you don't want to take calcium.

You want to eat calcium. So when you eat an egg, when you eat meat, when you eat dairy, everybody knows, everybody knows there's calcium in dairy. Right? Butter.

Calcium. Cream. Calcium. Cheese.

Calcium. Everybody knows that. But what they don't know is God put vitamin K2 in the cheese, in the dairy, in meat, in eggs. Why?

Because there's calcium in there. And you want calcium to be delivered where it belongs in your bones. The problem is people, they take a calcium supplement and it stays in your blood. Calcium will harden your arteries.

Why do you want that? You don't want that. You don't want calcium in your blood. You want calcium in your bones.

You need vitamin K2 to deliver it. This is why we put vitamin K2 in with our vitamin D. Because vitamin D in the process will help to bring calcium to your bones. But the traffic cop is the K2.

It'll take that calcium and put it where it belongs. Now, that's number one. Number two, you got osteopenia, you just make sure you get stronger. Muscle anchors into bones.

The stronger the muscle, the stronger the bones. I've been telling this to patients since the 1970s. You want strong bones, have strong muscles. You know who gets osteopenia and osteoporosis?

Skinniest rape people. And the obese. Why? They don't have muscle.

You need muscle to make strong bones. They anchor. And the more muscle is strong, it anchors into that bone. And the bone has to build more bone in order to anchor the muscle.

They work synergistically together. So, I don't ever tell anybody to have calcium. I tell them to eat their calcium. Eggs, meat, and cheese.

You think I'm kidding? I'm not kidding. The problem is if there's calcium in vegetables, it doesn't have K2 with it. You need the delivery mechanism.

Merci pour la question. Thank you. That was Judy. Jeanne, how does one know if you're taking...

Well, I think I answered this last week, I thought. How does one know if you're taking too much vitamin K2? Yeah, I answered this, Jeanne. Okay?

You're not going to eat too much vitamin K2. Okay? We got it in micrograms with our vitamin D. You're never going to get too much vitamin K2 eating eggs, meat, and cheese.

It's impossible. Nothing to worry about. And the micrograms, because they're really just micrograms in with the vitamin D. You're not getting too much K2.

K2 is good for you. So, Jeanne, don't worry about it. I thought I answered that. Maybe I didn't.

I'm pulling out my senior card. I don't remember if I answered. I thought I did last week. Teresa, what would help if someone has a mild kidney infection?

Well, look, I'd have them on probiotics big time. Make sure you're vitamin D because your immune system don't work properly without vitamin D. You'd be drinking lots of water. Kidneys, Niagara Falls, all you people that live in Niagara Falls, right?

You guys know this. Water is running all day long over the falls, right? And that's the way kidneys need H2O. Look, I mean, with kidneys, be very careful, Teresa.

You know, there's sometimes you might need an antibiotic. If you're taking an antibiotic, make sure you're taking probiotics because antibiotics will absolutely carpet bomb your microbiome. It kills the bad guys, but it kills the good guys too. I'd have you on oil of oregano.

Very antibacterial. I love oil of oregano. Have you ever heard of it before, guys? Oh, you have?

Yeah. From me. Debra, what does Dr. Martin think about structured water units?

Well, Debra, listen, I am very skeptical and I'll tell you why. Okay? I've been around, Debra, a long time. I've been around the sun 74 times.

I'm in the 75th time around. Plus, I've been in practice almost 50, well, I was almost 50 years. And everybody and their dog came up with a new invention. And when I had my radio show, they were trying to get me, okay, to endorse their products.

Okay. And I remember water. Okay. Dr.

Martin Kagan, K-A-N-G-A-N, Kagan water. You know, dog, this is the best thing since sliced bread. It fixes everything from pimples on your nose to warts on your toes. It cures cancer.

You need a machine. And it was about three or $4,000. And they wanted to get me to endorse it. I said, nah, I talk about water all the time.

There's probably no one that you know that talks more about the importance of water than me. Water and coffee. What do you drink? Water and coffee.

And I've been consistent. Water. And only water is water. Now, I don't like tap water.

I like spring water. You know, today, you know what the new craze is? Alkaline water. Okay.

Alkaline water. And they want you to drink, it's more expensive. And you know, it's ionized and whatever to get the pH up. What would that be good for?

You're not changing your blood's pH. Your kidneys regulate that. Your lungs regulate that. It's tightly regulated.

I don't care what you drink. The only thing you're affecting is the pH in your stomach. And you don't want your stomach pH to be alkaline. You want your stomach pH to be acidic.

So I tell people, why are you drinking that stuff? Now, I've read a few studies on maybe if you've got pepsin, okay, pepsin is an enzyme that belongs in your stomach. And sometimes it can coat your throat and you're clearing your throat type of thing. And that could be pepsin and you know, maybe a little bit of alkaline water.

You know, pepsin can't live in an alkaline environment. You see, because pepsin needs acidity because it belongs in your stomach. Has no business to be up in your throat. The only reason that happens is because the acidity in the stomach isn't low enough and the proton pumps start pumping out acid because people live on carbs instead of meat.

So Deborah, structured water. If you want structured water, don't spend one nickel on it. Take water and put it in the sun in a glass jar. You're going to get structured water.

Like to buy a device, I don't buy it. And I know there's certain guys out there and that's the best thing. It cures cancer. No, it don't.

You know, it gets into the cells. So does other water. If it didn't, you'd be in trouble. Right?

And I'm telling you, water is water. I like spring water because it's mineralized naturally. That's what I like. Okay.

I am happy you asked that. It got me off on a tangent. Okay. Glenda.

Glenda wants me to go into the weeds this morning because she's asking me about a marker of getting, and you even say it, Dr. Martin is in the weeds. My doctor recommends statin drugs based on my ApoB. There's ApoA.

There's ApoB. It's weeds. Why do I tell you guys this? Particles, cholesterol.

So in the last 10 years, okay, there's been a pushback on statins, the number one selling drug of all time. I get a migraine thinking about the number one selling medication of all time. Crestor, Zucar, Lipitor, let's lower cholesterol, hasn't even made a dent in heart disease. As a matter of fact, heart disease is worse than ever.

If cholesterol was at the root of heart disease, we would have cured it by now. Heart disease is worse because they're looking for love in all the wrong places. Heart disease is metabolic. So in the last 10 years, it's been a real pushback because people have social media.

There's guys like me who have podcasts who bring you the other side. I used to be a lone ranger in my radio show days. I got in trouble. I used to have a radio show in Ottawa on CFRA.

They kicked me off because I talked about cholesterol. True story. I talked about the hoax of cholesterol. They kicked me off.

They canceled my show. Okay. True story. Now, so there's been a big pushback.

It's still the number one selling drug of all time. How are you going to argue with your doctor if they want to put you on a statin drug? Like for the lay person and your doctor saying, you're going to have a heart attack if you don't listen to me. Well, who the heck wants a heart attack?

I don't want you to have a heart attack. But as they used to say in Dragnet, only the facts, ma'am. Only the facts. Give me the facts.

And when you look at the facts, statin drugs, cholesterol lowering medication, and now, see, they had to get into the weeds. Here's what they did. Now we got Apo, A, and B. And the B, oh, bad.

They want to keep you on statins. I don't agree with them. I don't see the connection. I'm much more interested in your triglycerides.

Why do you want to have low cholesterol? I want your cholesterol to be high. You're going to live longer, especially as you get older. Your brain's made up of cholesterol.

Why do you want to lower it? Blaming cholesterol because it's at the crime scene. We saw cholesterol in your blood vessels. Hello.

That's where cholesterol belongs, in your blood vessels. They're the FedEx trucks, the Amazon trucks, on the highways and byways of your blood vessels. What do you think they're doing there? Well, they're there because they're delivering your hormones.

And they got a trailer on the back. They got two trailers, one to deliver hormones and the other one to carry triglycerides when they get high back to the liver for processing. I don't buy it. You can't make me.

I'm glad you asked questions though. Don't be shy, guys. I mean it. Okay?

Because sometimes I'll pull your leg a little bit. I might tease you a little bit. But I'm a big tease. Okay?

We were 11 kids in our family. We had to grow a thick skin. We got teased a lot by my siblings. Oh, can I give it back though?

Okay. That was Glenda. Thanks, Glenda. We really appreciate the question.

Look, I'm not telling you not to take a statin drug. You're not my patient. This is for information purposes only. This is an educational program.

I'm not your doctor. I'm trying to give you ammunition. My goal is for people to become their own doctors first. I'm not saying dismiss your doctor.

Of course you don't do that. Right? You get hit by a bus. Don't come see me.

I used to tell people that. I ain't going to help you. Okay? You need the emergency department.

You don't need me. But when it comes to prevention, when it comes to eating and eating right, when it comes to lowering your triglycerides and elevating your HDL cholesterol, I can show you how to do that. And I believe that that's far more important than lowering your cholesterol. Okay?

And even your APO. Vanda, how are you Vanda? Just wondering what makes a person's stomach gurgle. Well, I would answer the very same way as I answered Manik.

If you're gurgling, you might not have enough acidity. Always look at the stomach first. Okay? You go down the line.

First stop for food is what? Stomach. Right? First stop.

Stomach could be problems in there. Not enough acidity. Okay? Not enough enzyme.

Pancreatic enzymes that go into the stomach to break down protein. Okay? You have lipase. You have amylase.

You have protease. Okay? Protease, protein. Lipase, fat.

Okay? You need these things to break down food. So, you might have trouble with that. You might not have enough enzyme even to break carbohydrates down.

Okay? That's why I love digestive enzymes. You gotta look at that. First stop, stomach.

Second stop, past the stomach. What's the next stop for food? Your small intestine. Your small intestine ain't that small, but it's small compared to your colon.

And your small intestine is actually wide. It's not narrow like your colon. It's wider because this is where absorption of your food takes place. And a lot of people have trouble with absorption.

They're not absorbing their food. Big problem is you gotta go backwards to the stomach for a minute. They're not breaking down the food properly and the food is not micro-sized properly. You don't have enough acidity, not enough enzymes, and that gets into your small intestine.

And between your small intestine, you've got a barrier there. It's called your blood-gut barrier. And you don't want any crap. You only want micro-sized food to come into your blood there.

And a lot of people have SIBO or CFO, small intestine fungal overgrowth. They got a fungus that can make them bloated. It can make them gurgle. It can make them not digest their food properly.

A lot of things like that. Okay. Let me see. Well, we'll do a few more here.

Thomas, I'm gonna start off by saying I try not to wear sunglasses all the time. I just want to tell you about me. Okay, Thomas, I don't wear sunglasses. I don't wear.

I'm so used to not wearing sunglasses. I don't wear them. You know, some people, their eyes are so sensitive. I used to see that with chronic fatigue and all that.

They gotta put their sunglasses on. The light bothered them. But guys, you know, just looking out to my right this morning, beautiful sun. You know how good that's for you?

For your eyeballs? Your eyeballs need the sunlight. They really do. And sunlight in your eyeballs helps your eyeballs.

Plus, you get melatonin. You guys never hear me saying, well, take melatonin as a supplement. I don't say that. You get it in the sun.

Sunlight helps melatonin. Okay? Without sunglasses. And I used to tell people, if you can go 20 minutes, especially in the morning, and not wear sunglasses, okay?

It's so good for you. It's so good for you. Okay. I'm okay with what you're doing.

Thomas is getting that 20 minutes of sun. Yeah, you're all right. Then you can, if you need to put your sunglasses on, put them on. I don't wear sunglasses anymore.

I don't need them. Okay, that's me. I just don't need them. Okay, Carol, and let's make this the last one here.

Because how many more do I got? Oh, we got another program. Oh, we sure do. But Carol, best way to calm and treat a stomach ulcer.

Okay, well, an ulcer is a different puppy. Okay? It's a different puppy altogether. I like mucilages.

Okay? Slippery L. Marshmallow root. We have a digestive calm.

Okay, really good for the stomach and the intestine. And I really like aloe vera juice. Okay, I love aloe vera juice because it really does help on the sunburn of the stomach. Gastritis or even an ulcer.

Okay? Even an ulcer. And probably with some dairy. Okay?

Coat the stomach. Okay? Okay, we'll leave it at that, guys. As usual, my audience, any audience more educated, okay, to the 111,000 followers, because I read this morning on the Martin Clinic private Facebook, 111,000.

Crazy. Okay. You guys, you make this program. I have no program without you.

I've been talking to myself. I do that sometimes. You? Okay, guys, we love you and talk to you soon.

Announcer:  You've reached the end of another Doctor Is In Podcast, with your hosts, Doctor Martin Junior and Senior. Be sure to catch our next episode and thanks for listening!
