1903. Q&A with Dr. Martin

Dr. Martin answers questions sent in by our listeners in today's episode.

TRANSCRIPT OF TODAY'S EPISODE

Announcer:  You're listening to The Doctor Is In Podcast, brought to you by MartinClinic.com. During the episode, the doctors share a lot of information. As awesome as the info may be, it is not intended to diagnose, cure, treat, or prevent any disease. It's strictly for informational purposes.

Dr. Martin:  Hi guys. Welcome to another the doctor is in podcast. We are so happy to be doing Q&A Friday. One of our favorite programs of the week, of course, Joni is asking, what test should I look for in my blood work to be concerned about metabolic syndrome?

I am so glad Joni that you asked that question. It is such a good question. Now, if you don't have my book, Sun, Steak and Steel and Sleep, get that book. You will love that book, by the way.

I'm tooting my horn here. My son and I wrote that book. I like it. Of course, I wrote it, but no, it is so informative.

There's a whole chapter in there, Joni, on what test to look at. Look at your own blood work, how to interpret your blood work. Now, you need your doctor to get blood work, but it is worth looking at your own blood work because medicine, and I always say this, God bless them, but they look at different things than I look at.

When it comes to metabolic syndrome, here's what I want you to look at. Here's what I want you to look at. I want you to look at your A1C. I want you to look at your triglycerides.

I want you to look at your HDL cholesterol. Your triglycerides should be low. Your HDL cholesterol should be high compared to your triglycerides. At least equal, not below.

That's how you determine metabolic syndrome. There's a few other things that are really important to look at. A1C, if it's above 5.4, you and carbs don't get along, so don't fool yourself. Metabolic syndrome, 93% of the population, I didn't make that statistic up.

That is, it used to be in 2016, I did this on my radio show, because there was a study that came out and said 88% of the population had metabolic syndrome. I had written a book in 2011 on the 100th anniversary of the Martin Clinic, 100 years. My grandfather started the Martin Clinic in 1911. He was light years ahead of his time.

Some of the potions and some of the things that he developed, incredible. But we wrote a book in 2011 on serial killers, two hormones I want you dead, insulin and cortisol. Then we wrote another book on metabolic syndrome, the metabolic reset. Then I put the metabolic reset back into a new book called Sun, Steak and Steal and Sleep.

All those tests are there. A1C, triglycerides, your HDL. Do I look at LDL? I'll look at it, but it's not part of metabolic syndrome.

Doctors are concerned about cholesterol. I'm concerned that your cholesterol is too low, because that tells you you're not breaking down food properly. You're on the Titanic. I also look at slightly elevated blood pressure, belly fat.

Those are things that the world looks at. I want to look at your blood tests. I would rather look at your blood tests for that. I add uric acid to that list.

I add vitamin D to that list. I add B12 to that list for metabolic syndrome. When vitamin D is low and most people are low, vitamin D does almost everything, but it is a big factor in metabolic syndrome. So is B12, because B12 is a metabolic vitamin that I talk about all the time.

Those are the tests, Joni, that you want to get done. Janine is asking, how does one know if you're taking too much vitamin K2 while eating EMC and supplementing with vitamin D3 and K2? Well, I wouldn't worry about that, Janine. Vitamin K2 is found in eggs, meat, and cheese.

So if you're eating eggs, meat, and cheese, you're not going to overdose on taking too much vitamin K2. I know it's a fat soluble vitamin, but there's never been a case. I know why you're sick. You're taking too much vitamin K2.

Never. I want you to eat your K2. Now, the reason we put vitamin K2 in with vitamin D is because vitamin D, and everybody knows this, every doctor, even doctors know this. Okay, even doctors know this, that vitamin D helps with your bones.

The problem with doctors, the problem with doctors, most of them, is that's all they think vitamin D does. Okay, so, oh, it helps with bones, but be careful, you can overdose on it. Anyway, I don't want to get into that part, but vitamin K2, you know what it does? It takes calcium that vitamin D helps to absorb in your body and puts it in the right place.

That's why, guys, this is what I'm saying to you. Okay? Do you think God made a mistake when he told us to eat eggs, meat, and cheese? Why?

Because you have calcium in eggs, meat, and cheese, and you have vitamin K2 in there. What does that do? Well, there's calcium. I don't want you to take a calcium supplement.

I really don't. Okay? I really don't. But calcium, when you eat it, which is good for you, it's delivered with K2.

K2 is right in cheese. K2 is right in the butter. Is there calcium in butter? Yep.

Is there calcium in cheese? Yep. Everybody knows that. There's a lot of calcium in dairy, but it's got vitamin K2 built in.

That's nature. God gave us that so that you get the calcium sent into your bones where it belongs. Do you understand that? And, Jeanine, listen, you're not going to overdose on that.

Even if you're taking vitamin D with K2, you're not going to overdose on that. It's just good for you. I take it every day. And K2 takes calcium and puts it where it belongs.

You don't want calcium in your arteries, do you? You don't want calcium in your bloodstream, do you? It hardens. It belongs in your bones, in your teeth.

I like the question, Jeanine. I really do because it gives people even more information. Right? The Q&A is to give, like we answer questions, but a lot of times, other people are thinking the same way and they want to know, am I overdosing?

You're not overdosing. That I promise you. Teresa, are these worth taking? NAD, the molecule that your cells run.

Look, I'd rather you eat it. NAD is a precursor. It's an antioxidant. Your body makes it.

And it's a precursor to glutathione. Do I want you to take it as a supplement? I can think of betters. You want to take it?

I don't care. I don't. I always have to put an asterisk here of what I'm going to say. Okay, guys?

Put an asterisk. You're asking me, okay, about certain supplements. I'm glad you asked. Understand, okay, a couple of things about me.

I'm very biased. I'm biased. I admit it. Remember, I was in practice for 50 years.

I had to get results. People came to me from all over the world that would get results. Otherwise, you're going to be Dr. Martin.

He's a bum. He don't know how to fix anything. So when I answer you, you, Teresa, you have to understand, number one, I'm biased. Number two, I had to get results.

So when I tell you what I used in my clinic with real people, hundreds of thousands of patients visits over the years, every day, seeing real people with real problems. For example, a lot of things you can test. You don't have to guess. You can test.

For example, you can test vitamin D levels. Does vitamin D work? Well, it better be elevating your dehydroxy 25 in your blood work. I looked at that.

That's how I know vitamin D work. When I gave them vitamin D with K2, omega-3, you can measure it. Cortisol, you can measure it. I had testing for leaky gut and yeast and fungus.

You can measure it. Better work. You better be able to get rid of it. Right.

So I'm just saying for me, when you asked me about taking NAD, I don't care. I didn't use it in my practice. I liked another precursor to glutathione called Navitol. I discovered that 40 years ago.

I've been using it ever since. A pine bark extract. Probably no product on the planet. Maybe vitamin D has been studied more than that.

But natural substance has been studied more than pine bark extract. And yet, most people don't know about it. But I used it in my clinic very successfully. All the research on crossing the blood-brain barrier, elevating glutathione, powerful antioxidant, anti-inflammatory.

I used to call it a polypill because it did a lot of things. I'm going to compare NAD to pine bark. Do I like it? Do I like NAD?

Yeah. I like it. I just like something better. So I always had in my little thing at my office, okay?

This is good. There's better. And then there is best. Okay.

That was me. That's the way my mind goes. These are good. This is better.

And this is the best thing. I used to recommend to my patients, do this. You got this problem, I want you to do this. So that's the way I operate it.

Okay, Teresa, you want to take NAD? Go for it. Okay. It's a master detoxer.

Yeah. I like pine bark better. I really do. Mercy.

What causes trigger finger? Well, you can get trigger fingered. It's called glycation. Okay.

What is glycation? Well, it takes collagen or it takes your tendons and it sort of not necessarily calcifies it, but it hardens it. Okay. That's what sugar does, by the way.

It glycates. Sugar glycates your skin, your collagen. It glycates it. Sugar is very destructive.

You don't believe it? Ask a diabetic. Okay. Now, trigger finger is caused by glycation, cut back on sugar.

I used to say this all the time and it's called in medicine, it's called Dupuytren's contracture. Ooh. You want to give me a migraine? Talk to me about big medical term.

Okay. Instead of saying the word trigger finger, they use a word called Dupuytren's contracture. You have to memorize that and study it in school. I hate big words.

I'm a simple guy. I don't like big words. Why don't they just call it trigger finger in medicine? Because that's what it is.

Your finger sort of gets locked and it's not in the fingers so much as it's in the tendon down in your hand and it glycates. I found, look, you got to work it yourself. I used to tell people like just constantly rub it, maybe take a little cream and do it, cut back on sugar. Anytime you see an itis, tinnitus, bursitis, plantar fasciitis, think insulin, think sugar.

Okay. I've done a lot of shows over the years on the downward effect of insulin resistance. Hands, skin, joints, liver, bowel, knees. I mean, insulin affects the whole body, your brain, your ears, tinnitus.

They're often a sign of insulin resistance. Watch your diet. And I like curcumin. I like the combination of Navitol and curcumin in any anti-inflammatory condition.

And Marcy's asking about her husband, diabetic, type 1 diabetic. Okay. His A1C is 8 something and the doctor has said that isn't too high for a type 1 diabetic. I tend to disagree with that.

It's too high, Marcy. Your husband obviously is on medication, but listen, whether it's type 1 or type 2, I know type 1 is different because the pancreas is not working. I understand that, but this is still a big but. He has got to watch his food and he does not do well with carbs.

And the B1C is 8 and above 8 point something. That ain't normal even for a type 1 diabetic. I don't agree with that. He's eating too many carbohydrates in my opinion.

Okay. Elaine, why are the white parts of my fingernail tips, okay, the white parts of my fingernail tips, I'm looking at mine right now, suddenly receding further back into the nail bit. And you say it ain't fungus. You've been tested for it.

I disagree with that. I think you've got fungal. Okay. Maybe it's something else, but I think you've got yeast.

I think you've got a fungus. That's what'll do it most of the time in my opinion. Okay. Tests for infection and fungus are negative.

Yeah, but they do. What test did they do for fungal? That you actually have a fungal infection? You got Candida, Elaine.

You got yeast. Don't feed it. You better be on probiotics. You better be on oil of oregano.

I'd put it right in your nail bit. You can make up a little salve with some probiotic and oil of oregano. Put it right in the nail bit. Teresa, what supplements would be good for a 70-year-old man to take to prevent prostate problems?

Well, I like the menopausal formula. I have a lot of men on it because of dim. Okay. Remember now the prostate.

Okay. Let's just talk about this for a minute. What makes the prostate grow? Okay.

What makes the prostate grow? What are the growth hormones for prostate? Insulin and estrogen. What makes it shrink?

Testosterone. Men, the balance is between testosterone and estrogen. A lot of men, they got more estrogen than their wives. Shouldn't be because their testosterone is way down.

What do you need for testosterone? Sun, steak, and steel. Okay. Don't steal something at the store.

I mean, get strong. That's how you elevate your testosterone. Sun, vitamin D, steak, and steel. That elevates testosterone.

And when a man's testosterone is up, his estrogen goes down. Now you can help that out with flaxseeds. The menopausal formula has got dim in it. It's for men and women.

Okay. In the United States, not in Canada, yet we have a prostate formula in the United States. Okay. Not in Canada yet because Health Canada has gone silly when it's come to supplements.

They used to be the best. Now they've become one of the worst. They just blight products. And there's a war in Canada going on against natural products.

Again, it used to be the best. Canada had the best legislation and protection for the consumer for natural products. It really did. It was the envy of the world.

I was involved, guys. I was involved in that. They were the best. I remember a health minister.

I met with him in Edmonton, Alberta, the health minister of Saudi Arabia. Okay. I met with him. You know what he told me?

If Canada certifies a natural product, we never question that in Saudi Arabia. We don't even question it. Your legislation is so good. And you know what?

They're trying to undo all of it. That's Canada for you. It really is. It's frustrating.

Products that had, they already went through the certification process in Canada, which is very diligent. And now they flag certain products and good luck with trying to get them back on the marketplace. Crazy. But it's the way it is.

And we're trying, we're doing everything we can. Look, I had a practice. My son and I practiced. We had a prostate formula.

I give him more credit than me because Dr. Martin Jr., he's smarter. He's like his mother, smarter than me. And he's a formulator.

I do some, but he's better than I am at it. Formulation. My dad was good at formulations. My grandfather was good at formulations.

And completely safe. Back to the question of prostate. Okay. I like Navitol too because it elevates nitric oxide.

One of the big things with prostate in men is circulation, circulation, circulation, blood flow, blood flow, blood flow. That's what happens to the prostate when they swell. Not enough blood flow. That's why I love Navitol, Pine Park Extra.

I like it with curcumin again. Very, very good for prostate. But you want to get the estrogen down. And food, get your insulin down.

Insulin is a growth hormone. Okay. Thanks for the question. Mona is asking, she's got bronchitis.

No fun. Under the sun. And it doesn't matter. She said, what I've done, it's not getting better.

Well, look at Mona. Look, it could be much more complicated. Look, lungs generally. Okay.

Lungs generally. Let me give you some general thing. Leaky gut, leaky lung. Lots of times with a chronic bronchitis.

Okay. Itis. Insulin. Okay.

I always say insulin. You got to fix that. Work on your leaky gut. I guarantee you.

If this is chronic bronchitis, they're irritated. There's a connection to fungus getting in there. A yeast is in your lungs. I can almost guarantee it.

Not easy. Don't feed the bears. Don't. Watch sugar and crappy carbs diet.

I like Navitol for lungs. I like Kersetan for lungs. Okay. I really do.

I like probiotics for lungs. Certain strains of the bacteria, the lactobacillus are tremendous for lungs. But let me tell you this, Mona, takes a long time. Long time.

And if you need a puffer, temporarily, you need a puffer. Okay. So I don't like if it's steroids, you know, because again, that just makes Candida worse. But if you need a puffer to help out temporarily, I'm not against that.

But you need to look long-term on this, Mona. And thank you so much for the questions. Lucy says, I have kidney stones and want to dissolve them naturally. Well, Lucy, good question.

You know me and kidneys, H2O. Niagara Falls. Your kidneys think of Niagara Falls. Water.

Okay. Water. Dehydration is one of the worst things for kidney stone. That's how they got there in the first place.

And let me ask you this, Lucy. What type of kidney stone are they? Are they uric acid? 25% of kidney stones are uric acid.

No high fructose corn syrup if they're uric acid. Are they oxalates? Calcium oxalates. Vitamin K2.

Eat eggs, meat and cheese and watch drinking tea, eating almonds and spinach and rhubarb and calcium oxalates are found in the plant kingdom with your saline. Okay. Lower that. Drink a lot of water.

Now, some have said if they're calcium oxalates, if you alkalize your urine, that will help. So sometimes doctors will give a potassium citrate or, you know, even baking soda. I don't know. I never found that to work.

To be honest, if I thought it worked, I'd be there giving a D.I.B. the first one. Alkalizing your urine. I never found that to be very effective, to be honest with you.

Over the year. Can dissolve kidney stones. Lucy. Gail is asking about AREDs, two supplement to help stop macular degeneration.

Again, Gail, I am so biased. I had to look up AREDs. A-R-E-D-2. S2.

I had to look it up. I've seen them before, but I started to forget. What is it? Well, it's got beta-carotene.

It's got vitamin C, the ascorbic acid, not coffee. It's got vitamin E and it's got zinc and copper. Do I like it? Yeah, no problem.

You want to take it? Macular degeneration or whatever. Can I give you something I find much better? Food layoff.

Because macular degeneration, it's circulation behind the eyes and glycation to the blood vessels, to the lens a lot of time. What helps? Well, cut out the sugar. And I found the combination, and I've said this on this program for years and years and years, the combination of DHA, omega-3, DHA, and Navitol, the best I've ever seen for eyes.

And if you look at the testimonies of people over the years with DHA in their eyes, well, your eyeballs are made up of DHA fat. And remember what DHA does. It lubricates your blood vessels. It makes them much less sticky.

It's an oil job. It's an oil change. And it's a fat. That your eyeballs love.

Pine bark opens up your blood vessels. Blood flow. Blood flow. I love it.

Better than elderberry. Better than vitamin C. Not coffee. Because coffee is the real vitamin C.

Everybody thinks I'm joking. I'm telling the truth. Coffee is the real vitamin C. Okay.

I better quit. Let me just see how many more we got that I didn't answer yet. Yeah, we got another few questions. So let's do this on Monday, Q&A Monday.

And by the way, that'll be Labor Day, but I'm on. Okay? I'll be working on Labor Day. It's not even work, guys.

This is just fun for me. I enjoy it. Okay? So we're on as usual on Monday.

So we'll do a Q&A and finish up. Okay? You should see, and I'll talk to you about this new study that came out, just read it this morning on DHA and vitamin D. Unreal.

We'll bring that to you next week. Okay? You guys know how much I love DHA. You guys know and how much I love vitamin D.

Holy smokes, you should see this new study. Okay? Anyway, we'll talk about it. Okay.

You guys, we love you. Thanks for joining us this morning. Tell your friends about this program. Okay?
