1897. What Dolly Parton's Kidney Stones Can Teach Us

Dr. Martin:Β  Well, good morning, everyone. Once again, welcome to another live this morning. Nice to have you on. And guys, you know how much we appreciate you.

Okay. Now, there's a couple of, well, this is actually an article. Yeah, there's a couple of studies, one on curcumin and the brain, how good it is for your memory and protecting the brain. You know how much we love curcumin.

Curcumin. Okay, here's the headline on one of these articles that I read and it gave me a migraine. A popular anti-aging supplement protects cancer cells from chemotherapy. Now hold on a minute.

And this happens a lot because anybody that's ever gone through cancer therapy or had the diagnosis of cancer gets told almost invariably, please stop all your supplements because it might interfere with the chemotherapy. And this article says, yeah, maybe that might happen. It's funny because if you remember last week, I brought to you a couple of studies that were done.

And let me just go back and refer to them. Okay. Because it talked about here, this is a meta analysis study of probiotics with cancer surgery and how good it was for you. And anyone that had cancer surgery, and when they did a meta analysis, they looked at people that were supplementing with probiotics and they found, you know what, they got a lot better quicker.

Okay. So, well, that's funny, you know, because here we are, here we are, you get studies that scare the life out of people, scare doctors more than anything, like oncologists, they wouldn't know a supplement if it slapped them in the face. And, you know, when you think of what chemo does, radiation does, I mean, it carpet bombs the microbiome.

And I just can't understand why you wouldn't want to be on a probiotic during chemotherapy before, during, and after to replace that microbiome that's going to be carpet bombed. And they don't want anything interfering with the chemotherapy, but the studies are showing that actually helps, it actually helps.

And so I read these articles and they really are out to scare people. And I don't know how often in a month I get asked, well, should I keep my supplements when I'm going through chemotherapy or radiation therapy? Anyway, like I said, it gives me like I said, it gives me a migraine. Okay.

So let's talk just a little bit here, because I think there's some principles that yesterday we got the bad news, right? Unless you were on another planet, you heard about Dolly Parton, right? Dolly Parton, 80 years old. And, you know, had been unwell for a while, actually came out, I think it was several months ago and canceled some tours that she had planned.

And who didn't love Dolly Parton, right? You know, so it's the whole world sort of just stood still for a minute yesterday and, oh, Dolly died and, you know, 80 years old, she seemed to be in real good shape or whatever. Now, listen, one thing I know, and that's what I want to talk about just for a minute.

Apparently this morning they said she had cancer. I don't know what type, but I know earlier, a few months ago, she talked about fighting kidney stones. And that they were just reoccurring. And I can tell you that anybody that's ever gone through kidney stones will tell you that it's no fun under the sun getting a kidney stone.

But I wanted to just talk about that for a minute because people ask me about this all the time about kidney stone. So we'll go over that a minute. And that's apparently what Dolly suffered from. Now, I guess it's possible that, you know, a kidney stone can lead to an infection in the kidney and you could become sepsis.

It's possible. But I don't think that's what happened because they talked about cancer. And again, we're just folks are waiting until the family updates people on exactly what type of cancer she might have had. And again, I just heard that.

I'm not sure. Now listen, let's talk about kidneys for a minute because you know what I do here on this program, I talk about kidneys as being Niagara Falls, right? You want water going over them all the time, washing those kidneys out. Like when you want to do a detox, guys, there's two main organs for detoxification.

One is your liver and the other is your kidneys. You want to detox. Now, when it comes to kidney disease, the three main factors when it comes to kidneys are these, okay, blood sugar. And we'll talk about that in a minute.

Blood pressure and obesity. Those are the three main factors when it comes to chronic kidney disease, okay, because they've done all the meta analysis, looking at it and they go, well, here, there's usually three major things that go wrong with your kidneys. The number one thing is blood sugar. Now, what's our teaching on that?

Let's go back to our teaching, right? Sugar is what? Toxic. If you don't believe that, ask a diabetic because diabetics have trouble with diabetes.

Sugar. And because it's really sugar, diabetes. And then what does sugar do? What does a diabetic have trouble with?

They are 10 times more likely to have a heart attack or heart disease or stroke. They are 10 times more likely to have kidney problems and dialysis, just the way it is. And so sugar, and a diabetic, for example, is 10 times more likely to have glaucoma, cataracts, trouble with their eyes. Why is that?

Sugar destroys blood vessels. The world out there, like you're a diabetic and they don't tell you, well, you know what you should do? You should avoid sugar at all costs. No, no, moderation.

That's the, you know, that's sort of the mantra. No, it's not moderation. It's elimination because sugar is destructive. And you have an organ dedicated, okay, your pancreas, it's dedicated to getting sugar up to your liver.

Dedicated to getting sugar out of your bloodstream. It's a no parking zone. Sugar, you can't park in the blood vessel. You just can't.

Get out of there. Come with me. That's what insulin does. And it parks sugar unless you're using it right away as energy.

So your body knows that. Your body's dedicated not to allow sugar to stay in your bloodstream. You can have 10 donuts. Don't do it, but you could.

And your body will scramble to get that sugar that's in the donut out of your bloodstream. It must tightly regulate your bloodstream. It's a no parking zone. You're in a no parking zone.

You're in a no parking zone. So you guys know that. My audience knows it because we talk about it all the time. Insulin is a traffic call.

You're in a no parking zone. Get out of there, right? Sugar, come with me. I'm going to park you somewhere else.

And that's why we always talk about having muscle as parking spots. The problem is a lot of people don't have any bins. They have no muscle to park in. So they can't park sugar there.

So the body switches to the liver. And when the liver is full, it switches to making unlimited amount of fat cells as parking spots for sugar. Okay, so now back to the kidneys. All the research is pointing to the number one cause of kidney problems is sugar.

It destroys blood vessels. The kidneys, they filter your blood 24 hours a day. And when there's sugar in that bloodstream, the kidneys are in trouble. Very destructive.

And again, I point you to diabetics who have 10 times more problems with their kidneys than the average person in the population. It's just the fact, guys. It's just the fact. So when they say this, okay, when, for example, kidney stones, by the way, okay, kidney stones, there's two types of kidney stones.

One, oxalates. Oxalates, right? When you eat spinach, when you eat almonds, when you eat sweet potatoes, okay? They have a lot of oxalates.

And they can form kidney stones. Okay? So people that love their saline, their spinach saline, 75% of all kidney stones are oxalates. 25% are uric acid.

25% of all kidney stones are uric acid. Now, how do you make uric acid? Well, it's a byproduct. Everybody makes uric acid.

Okay? Everybody makes it. It's a byproduct of the Krebs cycle. It's your body makes uric acid.

When you can't clear it, and your kidneys are struggling to clear uric acid, a couple of things can happen. You can get crystals that form, usually in joints, like the big toe. Okay? But uric acid crystals can develop almost anywhere.

That's when you get that's when you get gout. And people, they focus in on gout. Uric acid, gout. No, most people that have trouble with elevated uric acid levels, they don't even have gout.

And one of the biggest things in uric acid, and not clearing it, again, we're going to get to another sugar, fructose. High fructose corn syrup, the antichrist of sugars. It's in every soda. It's in all those drinks, including Gatorade, and Powerade, and all the sugary drinks, and juices.

All the sugary drinks, and juices. It's fructose. What happens with fructose? Goes to the liver.

It don't pass gout. It's like monopoly. Fructose goes to the liver. That's why a bear, okay, listen to what I'm going to say, a bear, we got lots of them in northern Ontario, okay?

Like my sister used to say, oh, they're buying condos. There's so many of them, okay? And this time of the year, even a little bit earlier, they're living on blueberries. Up to 30,000 blueberries a day.

Can you believe that? Why are they doing that? It's August. August, they're getting ready to hibernate.

They need to fatten up. So what do they do? They get fructose. They fatten up.

They fatten up their liver, and then they fatten up the rest of their body so that they got lots of fat to survive the winter when they hibernate. That's a fact. Okay, so guys, what am I saying here? When you're making high uric acid and your body can't clear that, your kidneys can't clear the uric acid, there's a couple of things that can happen.

You can either get gout or you can make kidney stones from the uric acid. That originally, part of it comes from fructose. And the worst one is, and why is, I'll give you an example, okay? I'll just give you a stat.

Why is gout? Gout's been around since the days of Noah, okay? Like a lot of people in history, including Napoleon, by the way, he suffered from gout. He wrote about it.

They called it the king's disease. And then they said, well, it's because the kings are eating purine, meat. No, the king was drinking too much wine and beer, and uric acid levels go up. And for some people, they don't even know it because they never get their uric acid levels tested.

Now, of course, you know me. I've added, okay, we at the Martin Clinic, we at the Doctors in Podcast have added a biomarker to have tested in your blood work for metabolic syndrome. You know what that is? Get your uric acid levels tested.

Doctors might, they might go like this, okay? You go to your doctor and say, I'd like to have my uric acid levels tested. Well, you don't have gout. Why do I want to test that?

Well, tell them that Dr. Martin sent you. See how they react to that? Like, oh, if you don't have to tell them, don't tell them I did it.

I spoiled it again. Because guys, I'm not kidding you, with all my experience over the years, we at the Martin Clinic want you to include uric acid. If you get the book Sun, Steak and Steel, we want you to include uric acid in metabolic syndrome. So, you know, when you're getting your cholesterol checked, we want your cholesterol to be high, not low.

We want to check your triglycerides. We want you to check your A1C or get your fasting insulin done. Right? We want you to get your ferritin done.

We want you to get, if you can, your homocysteine done. We want these because they are all indicators of what we call metabolic syndrome. And 93% of the population have metabolic syndrome. And I'm going to tell you something.

If you get into kidney trouble, okay, bringing it back to kidneys now, if you get into kidney trouble, 99.9%, you have metabolic syndrome. You got kidney trouble? You got metabolic syndrome. And metabolic syndrome defined is how your body breaks down food for energy at the mitochondrial level.

You know what happens? Your battery packs become very resistant to the traffic caught insulin. Because people that get metabolic syndrome, they don't even know it, they got a bad relationship with carbs and sugar molecules holding hands, like bread and pasta and rice and cereals and juices and even store-bought milk.

They've got a bad relationship with it. They can't break it down properly. And they're in that 93%. And the problem with that is, for example, because I already, okay, the first one I mentioned on kidney is blood sugar.

The second one is blood pressure. If you got trouble with blood pressure, it can damage your kidneys. Damaged kidneys can give you trouble with high blood pressure. Okay, where does that come from?

Sugar! The vast majority of people that are on blood pressure medications, if they would just change their diet, their blood pressure would go down. It's not salt and blood pressure. They fudge that.

Salt causes high blood pressure. Well, they admit that that affects the kidneys. But it's not salt. It's sugar.

It's sugar that is destructive to the kidneys, not salt. And by the way, the only time salt will ever bother a person is if they're not drinking water at the same time. You know me and like anybody that's from Niagara Falls on our program, Janice and Rosalinda and others that come on from Niagara Falls, they know this.

What do I call the kidneys? Niagara Falls. Go to Niagara Falls on the American side or the Canadian side. It don't matter.

24 hours a day, go at two in the morning, go at two in the afternoon. It don't matter. Water is flowing over Niagara Falls 24 hours a day. That's why water is so significant for your kidneys.

Blood pressure, blood sugar. Remember water, okay? Just hold on for a second. Let me bring something to you maybe that you've never thought of.

Okay? When someone is turning into a full diabetic, okay? You know me. I'm like Dr.

Kra. Okay? I don't believe in pre-diabetic. You're either on the Titanic or you're not.

Okay? I'm not a pre-guy. You're on the Titanic, turn the ship around. Okay?

So if your A1C is above 5.4, you're on the Titanic, turn the ship around. But think about thirst for a minute. One of the signs that a person is becoming a full-blown diabetic, they're thirsty and they're peeing all the time. Polyuria, polydipsia.

Why is that? Think about it for a minute. Your body's trying to get rid of sugar and water. You're thirsty.

It's saying, give me water because water is at least going to dilute the sugar. Water, water, water. It dilutes. That's why diabetics, they're thirsty and they pee frequently.

The body is trying to get rid of sugar. Your body is dedicated to it. Not salt, sugar. So I can tell you one thing.

I've never met Dolly Parton, but I'm going to tell you something. If she had kidney stones, they were either oxalate and she was eating way too many vegetables. Okay? Or she had trouble with blood sugar and she had trouble with fructose.

And she was making uric acid crystals. See, when you came into my office, I analyzed all that. Because I analyzed your diet. And when we looked at your blood work, we were very interested in your uric acid levels.

Well, Dr. Martin, I don't have gout. I don't care. I'm very interested in uric acid.

Of course I was interested in oxalates too. Okay? Very destructive to kidneys. Oh, Dr.

Martin, just love my almonds. They don't love you that much. Okay? There's a lot of oxalates in there.

I love my tea. I like coffee better. Coffee is better for your kidneys than tea is. Tea's got oxalates.

Okay? I know. Don't come after me. Okay?

Because a lot of people, they talk to Martin, you just made that up. And you like coffee so much. No, I'm telling you. I'm telling you.

Okay. And the third one is obesity. It's a big factor in kidneys. Well, guys, again, what do I got to tell you?

When you use insulin too much, insulin is a fat storing hormone. Insulin, let me say it again, is a fat storing hormone. So when you eat eggs, meat and cheese, butter, your insulin is on the sidelines on the sidelines, whistling. It doesn't have anything to do.

It's just sitting there. You're giving it a break. You're giving it a break. Look again, okay?

The reason I brought this up is because it was in the news. Dolly Parton. I don't know what cancer she had. She might have had kidney cancer.

I don't know. Apparently she had cancer. But guys, is that official? You know, we're not even 24 hours out.

I have no idea. But I know one thing. She complained about having kidney stones and it made her very unwell. Well, you can imagine it's like having a baby with no baby at the end.

When men get kidney stones, they're reminded of what their wives go through a little bit. A little bit. Look, that's in the medical books, by the way. Okay?

Don't come after me because I'm a man. You men, you're a bunch of babies. I agree with you ladies. We're a bunch of babies.

Okay? We could never have a baby. We're not tough enough. We're not like you guys.

You women. Okay? I agree with you. I'm not arguing with you.

But in the medical books, take out a medical book or Google it, they say, what is that pain like to have a kidney stone? Oh, it's like having a baby with no prize at the end. I'm telling you. That's what it says.

Okay. I'm just trying to read some comments. Maybe somebody's already know what kind of cancer she had. I don't know.
