Announcer:Β You're listening to The Doctor Is In Podcast, brought to you by MartinClinic.com. During the episode, the doctors share a lot of information. As awesome as the info may be, it is not intended to diagnose, cure, treat, or prevent any disease. It's strictly for informational purposes.
Dr. Martin:Β Well, good morning, everyone. Once again, welcome to another live this morning. Hope you're having a great start to your day and we appreciate you guys. Big time.
Let's get going, guys. Okay. Couple of questions were asked of me yesterday. Let me just see here that I saw afterwards.
Oh, well, it was actually on I think we talked about this on Friday in Q&A. And I just wanted to follow up with it because someone had said they read somewhere that you shouldn't take vitamin D with K2. I don't know who said that, but it's actually better if you're taking a supplement of vitamin D to take it with K2.
And then the question was asked, well, what's better K2, MK4 or MK7? Now, I don't want to get into the weeds too much, guys, and complicate life. Okay. So vitamin K2, think about it, is in the animal kingdom.
Mostly. K1 is plants. And K1 will thin your blood a little bit. And, you know, they'll tell you, well, don't take vitamin K if you're on a blood thinner.
That gives me a migraine. Okay. But vitamin K2, and we teach this all the time, why is it important? Because it takes calcium and puts it where it belongs.
Okay. Calcium. And guys, I like calcium, by the way, because some people have said, well, Dr. Martin, you don't like calcium.
Well, wait a minute. I don't like calcium in a supplement. I didn't give calcium to my patients. They get a lot of it.
If they eat eggs, meat and cheese, you get a lot of calcium. I want you to eat calcium. Because when you eat calcium in the animal kingdom, you got vitamin K2 right with it. It's the way it's intended in nature.
God gave you cheese, has calcium. Everybody knows calcium's in dairy. Everybody. Right?
A kid knows that just about. Oh, there's calcium in dairy. Yeah, big time. Is it good for you?
Yeah. Why? Because it's delivered with K2. And K2 sends it in to the bones where it belongs.
Calcium doesn't belong in your bloodstream. Calcium doesn't belong in your tissue. Calcium, and that's one of the problems. Calcium calcifies.
Right? You're calcifying your arteries. Why would you want to do that? So, vitamin K2, what does it do?
It takes calcium and takes it out of your blood vessels and puts it into your bones. When you take a calcium supplement, it don't get to your bones. It stays in your bloodstream. Now, remember, when you take, you go in the sun.
Okay? The sun's out this morning. Beautiful. What does vitamin D do?
The sun. Okay? You like my t-shirt? Sun, steak, and steel, and sleep.
Okay? So, the sun is good for your bones. It's good for everything. But if you ask a doctor, okay, here's what they take in medical school.
Vitamin D, okay, helps to give you more bone strength. Okay? Because it helps to increase calcium in your bones. Okay?
But what doctors, okay, the five minutes that they get on nutrition in medical school, it's unfortunate, but they are so scared of vitamin D. Not only the sun, because they're terrified of that. They've been lied to, but they get lied to in medical school too, because what they do is they use bad math.
Vitamin D, imagine, and this happened a long time ago, guys. The calculations on vitamin D, it was just bad math. Someone made a boo-boo and nobody corrected it. When I was in school in the 1970s, well, you better not take any more than I'm going to give you.
200 international units of vitamin D. 200. A mouse couldn't survive on 200. So, if you get too much vitamin D, you're going to calcify Look, here's the studies, okay?
Actual studies. Six months, 50,000 IUs a day for six months, and they still didn't get calcified. Because one of the things they'll tell you is you couldn't get enough of vitamin D. You couldn't get enough of vitamin D.
You couldn't get enough of vitamin D. You couldn't get enough of vitamin D. You couldn't get enough of vitamin D. You couldn't get enough of vitamin D.
And the other thing they'll tell you is you could get kidney stone. Guys, they ain't lining up in the hospital waiting rooms, and the doctors are there going, oh, I know why you're here because you took too much vitamin D. They would like to say it, but they never see it. They never see it.
Now back to vitamin K2. That was a long jump. The second part of the question is, vitamin K2, what do you put in with vitamin D? Well, look, MK4 is fine.
The best one, because it's more bioavailable and your body absorbs it better, is MK7. But vitamin K2, you guys know me on this. I want you to eat eggs because they got calcium and vitamin K2. I want you to eat meat.
Why? Because besides a lot of other things, it's got calcium and vitamin K2. I want you to eat good dairy. There's bad dairy.
I want you to eat butter and lots of it. I want you to eat cheese and lots of it. You want to have cream? I don't even want you drinking dairy.
I really don't, unless you have a cow in the backyard. I really don't. You know what I want you to drink? Water.
And I want you to drink coffee and maybe Dr. Martin's perfect smoothie with cream. So, in nature, you got a lot of calcium, a lot of calcium with vitamin K2. Guys, there's a reason for my madness.
Okay? I know I look like I may be a little bit insane, but I'm right about this. You don't take calcium supplements. You eat your calcium because it comes with vitamin K2.
There you go. That was a question that was asked. I said, I better get back to it. Okay?
New study on ashwagandha. It lowers cortisol. Hello. Hello.
It's another hello moment. I've been saying this for a year and it's one of the main ingredients in our cortisol formula. Okay? Ashwagandha.
I love it. I don't like it alone so much. You know, like some people take ashwagandha on their own. I like the formula better.
I like it with what I call synergistic properties along with it. Okay? But the new study on it, okay, here's let me read. It does one, two, three, four, five things in this new study.
Decreases cortisol. Hello. Yes. Increases sleep.
Okay? Remember, when you're cortisol, cortisol is good. It wakes you up in the morning, but it'll keep you up at night if it's too high. And the vast majority of people, okay, vast majority of people on the planet today, their circadian rhythm is out of whack because 70 or more percent of the population, they have trouble sleeping.
Unless they sedate themselves. What's happened? They're not getting into the recuperative REM sleep. This is why I wrote the book, Sun, Steak, Steel, and Sleep.
The more we're finding out about sleep, the more important it is. And I always talk about, you know, the brain. The garbage gets taken out at night. The self-cleaning oven works only when you're sleeping.
Not sedated. Ashwagandha helps with that. It really does. These are clinical trials where they put it up against placebo and then they measure.
And what did they find? Better sleep. Okay? Decreased cortisol.
Okay? Decreased cortisol. Better sleep. Decreased anxiety.
Decreased inflammation. Decreased oxidation. The double-edged sword. Inflammation, oxidation.
Good to know, isn't it? Okay? That's a new study. Now, let me say this.
This was a rare event in my office. I mean, extremely rare. Okay? If someone would come to my office, for example, with cancer, okay?
I never saw them first, guys. Or rarely. I saw them last. But you guys know me.
I'm a history guy. I want to know your history. I used to tell my patients, get here early. Well, I didn't tell them, but my staff would.
Get here early because you've got to fill out a questionnaire. Some people, why are you asking all these questions? Well, I'm a history buff. I want to know your history.
I want to know your history. Very significant to me. But there was a rare thing that happened in my office, and I mean extremely rare. Someone has cancer.
And when I dug into their history, they had gone through almost invariably a very stressful, intense period in their life with big time stress. What does that do? Well, elevated cortisol. Too long.
What does that do? It pours gasoline on the fire of cancer. It pours gasoline on the fire of inflammation that can lead to cancer, can lead to heart disease. Like I tell you, inflammation is not Houdini.
Did I tell you about this study? Let me just bring it in right here because I have it right here in my notes. Let me just see. Oh, I think that I bring this out.
I don't remember because usually when I bring out something, I cross it through my notes with my pen. Okay. Promising heart drug just failed. They put millions and millions of dollars into a new heart drug.
It was expected to be a blockbuster drug, but it failed. It went after inflammation. Why didn't they call me? Why didn't they call me?
I want people to lower their inflammation. I really do. But if you think you're getting rid of heart disease when you lower inflammation, nah, because inflammation is not Houdini. What caused the inflammation?
Okay. Was it insulin? Insulin resistance? It's one of the major causes of it.
You eat too much sugar. Inflammation. You see, if just by lowering inflammation, this blockbuster drug didn't fix the issue. You got to lower cortisol too because cortisol pours gasoline on the fire of inflammation.
Cortisol is not the cause necessarily, but it pours gasoline on the fire. I wrote a book, Twenty-Five, about the cause of inflammation. I wrote a book, Twenty-Eleven, Serial Killers, Two Hormones I Want You Dead, Insulin, Food, Cortisol, Stress. I meant it.
I meant it. Because go back to my previous first book on chronic fatigue syndrome. What did I say? Cortisol.
The oversecretion in fibromyalgia, chronic fatigue syndrome. Cortisol is a big factor because it pours gasoline on the fire. It's an accelerant. I rarely ever saw a cancer patient and even a heart disease patient that didn't have an intense period of uncontrolled cortisol, family dynamics, gone through a separation or divorce, financial issues, kids that are sick, taking care of an aged parent.
I tell you what's coming down the road, guys. It's going to be not good with all the amount of Alzheimer's and then people having to take care of a parent or worried about a parent that's got dementia or Alzheimer's. But in my history taking, this is what we found. Ladies with breast cancer, almost invariably.
There was an intense period of stress in my life. They could point to it. And I said, that ain't good. All that story to talk about ashwagandha.
But it helps. It helps. And I said, that ain't good. I just got to toot the horn a little bit.
I could literally change blood work. For cortisol, we actually used urine tests. We could change it with ashwagandha in the cortisol formula. That's why we love it.
That's why we love it. Let me see. Somebody asked, you said Dr. Martin.
Every once in a while, I see questions coming up on my scroll here. Well, actually after the program, if I get a chance, I'll sometimes scroll to see, well, I'm always looking for new people. I'm always looking for new people. We want to say hello to them.
We really do. We love this family. You guys are part of our family here. We're like family members.
And we got a real thing going in between us. We get along very well together. I really appreciate that. You have no idea, guys.
Because you guys are so stinkin' smart. But someone said, Dr. Martin, go over what happens when you eat junk. Because you guys know this, because I've mentioned this a lot of times.
When they give a rat, when they're doing testing, and they want to test insulin, they want to test blood sugar, and they're not doing it in humans. They do it in the rats, our mice. You know what they give them? A donut.
They call it rat chow. It's a combination of sugar and fat. You see in nature, you don't see the sugar and fat. You don't see it.
You'll see in an egg. Let's just use that as an example. You'll see protein and fat. Meat, protein and fat.
Dairy, protein and fat. I mean, there's traces of sugar, like in dairy. There's lactose. Whenever you see O-S-E at the end, you've got a sugar there.
But it's a little bit. Except when you drink grocery store milk, because that's white Pepsi. Because they take all the fat out of it. People think they're smarter than God.
They do. Oh, let's go fat free, said Stupid. Because fat makes you fat, according to the world out there. According to the dieticians, because they're just counting calories.
Fat makes you fat. No, it don't. No, it don't. The fat hormone is insulin.
And when you eat a piece of meat, you ain't gaining weight. You have an egg. You have 10 eggs in the morning. You're not gaining weight from that.
It's not calories in and calories out. It's insulin. It's insulin. Because it's a fat storing hormone.
You say, I gotta eat a donut. You don't have to, but let's say you do. Well, your insulin goes crazy. It has a job to do, because that donut, the high carb in there, is going to turn to sugar in nanoseconds.
Because they add sugar to donuts. I remember going to, I think it was Tim Horton's, I made them give me their ingredient list. I think you can get it easily now. But in those days, wasn't easy to get.
I said, no, no, you give me that how you make those carrot muffins. Dr. Martin. Oh, I heard that in my office a lot.
Dr. Martin. Yeah, but it's a carrot muffin. Carrot.
Carrots are good for you. Carrots are good for your eyeballs. And I said, look at me with your eyeballs. Okay, look at me.
No, they don't. Because in their carrot muffins, they put eight teaspoons of sugar. Forget the carrots. Eight teaspoons.
You think that's good for you? Your pancreas is having a hard time releasing insulin. Nothing will pack on fat more than that. Because insulin is the traffic cop, has no choice but to take sugar and store it as fat.
Glycogen. Fat. Okay, so what happens? You have a donut.
You have a muffin. You have a bagel. Look. Oh, now, Dr.
Martin, it's whole wheat. Whole wheat. I don't care. It's going to be sugar.
Whole wheat is sugar holding hands. And insulin is going to go crazy. Okay, what happens? Insulin spikes.
Cortisol spikes. Two hormones that want you dead. Insulin, cortisol. Cortisol spikes.
Okay? Increases your triglycerides. Fat balls. You increase your fat balls that are sent into your bloodstream.
Fat storage gets turned on. Especially if you don't have muscle. Because the favorite parking lot shouldn't be the Costco parking lot, your liver. It should be your muscles.
The more muscle you have, the more that you have bins for storage of glucose. But if you don't, it has to store it in the liver. And when the liver, the Costco parking lot gets full, you know what happens? You make you make fat cells.
And most people have an unlimited capacity to make fat cells. Parking spots for sugar. Fat cells are parking spots for sugar. How do you think you get fatty liver?
Why does 50% of the population have fatty liver? Why do kids have fatty liver? Oh, they're not made to drink juice. It's not the juice.
It's tropical. I don't care. It's sugar. It's fructose.
Right to the liver. So insulin spikes, cortisol spikes, your triglycerides go up, your HDL goes down, your cholesterol that you need to go get those triglycerides goes down. Inflammation goes up. Remember?
And cortisol, of course, pours gasoline on it. Hunger returns quickly. Because your leptin don't work properly. Skip the donut.
Skip the muffin. Skip the bagel. Skip the whole wheat toast. Skip it.
Okay, because somebody asked me. I said, I got to answer. Go over the physiology of what happens inside the body. Okay.
Okay. Love you guys. I know I do a lot of repetition, but you know what? Good luck trying to change this old goat.
It ain't gonna happen. What's Friday? Q&A. Get your questions in for Friday. Okay. Q&A.Β
Okay. We love you guys more than you know. We'll talk to you soon.Β
