Dr. Martin answers questions sent in by our listeners in today's episode.
TRANSCRIPT OF TODAY'S EPISODE
Announcer: You're listening to The Doctor Is In Podcast, brought to you by MartinClinic.com. During the episode, the doctors share a lot of information. As awesome as the info may be, it is not intended to diagnose, cure, treat, or prevent any disease. It's strictly for informational purposes.
Dr. Martin: Well, good morning everyone. Once again, welcome to another live this morning. Hope you're having a wonderful start to your day. We sure appreciate you guys coming on. Love you dearly. Okay. Questions? We got lots of them, but that's all right. Elaine is asking a question, "What do I think of a medication called Rizdronate?" And that is for osteoporosis. I don't think much of it. I never tell anyone not to take a medication, but if you're asking me my opinion on that medication, I don't like it. There's no magic to building bone. So here's a bone builder, rhizotronidate or whatever you call it. And first of all, there's a boatload of side effects. Second of all, it really doesn't build good bone. You're far better off doing it yourself. Vitamin D builds bone. Magnesium builds bone. Strength training. The real vitamin E. Build your muscles, build your bones.Build your muscles, build your brain. There's a lot about muscle. I think we'll do a session next week just on muscle physiology. It's unreal, but I used to tell my patients, "You got osteoporosis or you want to prevent osteoporosis? Get strong." Muscles anchor into the bone and the more they anchor in, the stronger your muscles are, the more they anchor in, the more they anchor in the more your bone strengthens itself. Okay? So what do I think? Not much because I observed all these medications for many years in practice and there was such better ways to build bones. That's my opinion.
I don't know if this is Rhonda or Rhinga. It's spelled Rhinga on my thing. Okay. "What supplements would I take if my creatinine is high?" Well, creatinine is a kidney function test. I like the glomerular filtration rate test even better, protein in the urine. But creatinine, your kidneys are under stress big time if they're extremely high. They're stressed out. Here's usually why. Insulin. Diet. Not meat because oh, creatinine. Creatine. Nah, it's not that. Okay. It's not that. Well, you got protein in my urine, Dr. Martin. I must be eating too much protein. No, it's the opposite. You're eating too much sugar and carbohydrates that turn to sugar in nanoseconds. That what stresses your kidneys. If you don't believe what I say, ask a diabetic. A diabetic knows that kidneys are in big trouble in diabetics. Why is that? Well, sugar is extremely toxic. It destroys blood vessels and blood vessels are very important for your kidneys to function properly. Okay? Kidneys, two things. You live in Niagara Falls, you'll know this one. You need water for your kidneys and you got to cut out the sugar for kidney function to work properly. And those are the biggest two things. Protein eating steak helps your kidneys. Okay? Let's see. That was Rhinga. Okay. You're 28 years old. Shouldn't have high creatine. Creatinine.
Rebecca. White spots on nails, usually fungus, maybe a sign of leaky gut. That's what I used to see in my office. I actually tested for leaky gut, so I didn't have to rely on nails, but I was very observant, looked at nails, eh, might have some fungus there in the body and usually I could confirm that when I tested. Okay, that was Rebecca. Thanks, Rebecca.
Diane, "looking for information regarding taking oil of oregano for ear infections." Well, I wouldn't put oil of oregano in your ears other than do this, okay, because I found this to be effective. You take a Q-tip, put a drop of oil of oregano in a Q-tip. Now, don't go far in the ear canal just a litle bit and turn the Q-tip a little wee bit and you can do the same thing in your nostril because that will help the ears too through the sinus canal. Oil of oregano. Now it's very strong. Be careful. Okay. But if you take it internally, that really helps. So you're taking a few drops. I brush my teeth with it. Oil of oregano on the toothbrush. It's so good because it don't kill your friendly bacteria, but it kills the bad guys. Okay? So you can sniff it. Be very careful in the ear canal. I don't like people fooling around in there, but if you just enter a little wee bit and put some in, it really does help for ear infections, Diane.
Janet's having trouble getting her breath for about a year. Her pulse rate very high and she read about a magnesium deficiency. She increased her magnesium. Seems to be pretty much disappeared when she took magnesium. Okay? Doctor did a blood test for magnesium and it found it to be too high. Well, listen, it's possible. Look, first of all, magnesium, the blood test for magnesium is, it's highly unreliable. I'll tell you why. Because magnesium belongs in your tissue. And if you got slightly elevated magnesium in your blood, what does it mean to me? Not much. Here's the side effect of too much magnesium. You might get diarrhea. Now you shouldn't be taking, I don't know, how many milligrams are you taking, Jan? You're not telling me that, that I see. But if you found that that really helped with your blood pressure and that, take it. What did your doctor say what happened to you? Because your magnesium is too high. What's going to happen? You're going to have a heart attack? Yeah, I doubt it. Okay. "How much elemental magnesium?" Well, look, I like magnesium bisglycinate or magnesium citrate. Those are my two favorite. You can take 400 to 800 milligrams a day easily of that.
Danny Lay, I'm finally getting to your question, Danny Lay. Okay? Danny's from Ironbridge, Ontario. And he said to me last week, I saw it on the scroll. Dr. Martin, you did not answer my question. Well, Danny, what did I do? I pulled out my senior card and I said, "I forgot." I'll pull that card out today. I guarantee you. Okay. I love my senior card. I'm a senior. I forgot. Okay. So Danny, can you explain alpha gal, G-A-L syndrome? Well, here it is. It's a tick and is consuming oil of oregano daily plus keeping our vitamin D levels optimized. Will it stop that syndrome from happening? Well, there's a good chance and I would add one more thing, probiotics because it usually when you get alpha-gal, gal or gale, I don't know how they pronounce it. It's a tick and it's usually you're in the third world and they're meat that's decayed like not cooked properly. But if you have a good immune system with vitamin D and the oil of oregano, I love your choices, Danny. And then I don't know if you're taking probiotics, but if you're not, you should and everybody should because it's going to happen in the gut and probiotics are your big defense from that. Okay. So good for you, Danny Lay. I answered your question.
Sherry, "I believe Dr. Martin said, if you have a heart attack, you must be on a statin." Nope. Sherry, I didn't say that. What I said was, if you had a heart attack, I guarantee you they will put you on a statin. Okay, that's what I said. I didn't say, why, I'd have you on a statin. Okay. I said, "if you have a heart attack, I guarantee you they're going to put you on a statin." Even if your cholesterol was within normal limits and you had a heart attack, they'll still put you on a statin. Had a cardiologist tell me one time, "if I don't put them on a statin and they've had a heart attack, the college physicians and surgeons are coming after me," because I was asking about, well, how many people do you see have a heart attack and their cholesterol is absolutely normal? "He said around 50%." Cholesterol is not at the root of heart disease. I'm sorry to say it. I know that bursts a lot of people's bubble, but what do you want me to tell you? I got to tell you the truth. You misunderstood, Sherry, and that's all right because you asked.
Carol, "I know cholesterol levels are connected to food." Yeah, they sure are, but not only to food, not only to food, because your body makes cholesterol. 85% of your cholesterol is made whether you eat cholesterol. And by the way, cholesterol is only found in the animal kingdom. That's one of the reasons they didn't like it, yet your body makes 85% of it. God wants you to provide 15%. He provides 85, you provide 15. If you don't, well, you're not going to drop dead immediately, but cholesterol is on your side. Cholesterol is not the boogeyman. I'm sorry it just isn't. Cholesterol, your body makes it, your brain needs it, your skin needs it. You can't even break down vitamin D and absorb vitamin D without cholesterol. Every cell in your body needs cholesterol because it's part of the cell wall. Cholesterol is important to deliver your hormones. You need cholesterol and they made it a boogeyman.
Why did they make it a boogeyman? Why did they do that? Well, we had some geniuses a long time ago. They thought they were geniuses that said, okay, I'll start it with this. President Eisenhower in 1955 had a heart attack and on guru said, "You know why his cholesterol is high?" One guy, he started a movement. What they didn't talk about was President Eisenhower was smoking four packs of cigarettes a day. Oh, smoking in 1955 was good for you. My doctor smokes Camels. What does your doctor smoke? I get a migraine. Oh, science never changes. Yeah, it does. And they made cholesterol a boogeyman. His name was Ancel Keys. He was on the cover of Time Magazine in 1962 and the whole cholesterol. "Don't eat eggs. You got cholesterol. Don't have butter, you got cholesterol. Don't eat red meat. They just got cholesterol. Don't eat bacon because it's got cholesterol. Let's have our cereals instead." And the cereal companies, the big food companies and then the pharmaceutical industry found a medication called statin drugs that lower LDL cholesterol. And the rest is history, guys.
The world went stupid. Every cardiologist, every physician since that time has been trained. I even got trained in my nutritional courses. I got trained. "Oh, you better lower your cholesterol." Now, I never believed that. I didn't buy it. I wasn't buying. I've been consistent. Some of you have known me for 50 years. You were some of my first patients ever. You know me consistent. Cholesterol's not the boogieman. Oh, cholesterol's at the crime scene. Oh, look at that waxy substance there in the blood vessels. What's that doing there? Well, cholesterol's always going through your blood. It's delivering. It's FedEx. It's Amazon. Of course it's going through your blood vessels. It's not the bad guy. I get on diatribes, guys. I can't help myself because you're asking me the question. I got to do it all the time. Carol says, "I know your cholesterol levels are connected to food." Yes. Not 100%, but yes. Okay. Oh, she's asking on the second part. I'm glad I read it. "I'm wondering about LDL and HDL have any connection with stress?" Well, look, stress anxiety pours gasoline on the fire. Okay? So look, you want your HDL to be high. You want your LDL to be high, not low and stress can affect that to some extent. But the biggest thing that you can help yourself with is food, eggs, meat, and cheese. Good dairy.
Joyce. "Dr. Martin, what do you think about air fryers?" Yeah, they're all right. You're heating them up. You might lose some enzymes, possibly. But I don't get into the weeds too much, guys. I don't because I want you to eat meat. So when you put meat in an air fryer, bacon, for example, I know a lot of people that do. Enjoy. I'd probably rather you fry it up in the grease because the grease is good for you. Okay? The fat is good for you. Fat don't make you fat and fat don't give you cholesterol either. Bacon fat's good for you. So what do I think of air fryers? It's convenient. Go for it. No problem. I'd rather you fry your bacon and use butter or lard or whatever when you're cooking a steak. Okay. Thanks for the question, Joyce.
Thea, "How does a person deal with MACS, which is mass cell activation syndrome?" What is that, first of all? It's when you are allergic to everything. You're allergic to yourself. Whenever I saw MCAS, there was a couple of things that I made a diagnosis with. One, when I looked at their blood, they had lots of mast cells. What are mast cells? MAST cells. They are allergy cells. They release histamine. It makes you sneeze. It makes you cough. It makes your eyes water. Your body's trying to expel things. That's what an allergy is. When you've got MACS and your immune system is going crazy, you're allergic to yourself. So I always bring it back another step. Why did that happen? You have severe, and I never saw an exception to this. Severe leaky gut. Severe leaky gut. Okay?
Jesus said this one, okay? He said, "This one needs fasting and prayer." Okay. Because when you have MACS, mast cell activation syndrome, you got a severe leaky gut, which is giving you and I believe a major overgrowth of yeast or fungus or candida. Big, big problem takes time. Don't feed the bears, get off sugar, get on broad spec. I know because even some websites will tell you don't even take probiotics because they're stryana. I just get a migraine when I hear that stuff. They don't know what they're talking about. You got severe leaky gut. You got to fix that. If you don't fix that, you're never going to fix anything when it comes to that. It's going to take time. Do the elimination. What can you tolerate and what can't you tolerate? You're allergic to yourself. That's what it is. It's autoimmune. Your immune system is going nutso, but I believe the bottom line is severe, severe leaky gut. I'm convinced of it. I've seen it. A lot of people because they were taking antibiotics as kids or whatever and they started with allergies and different issues and then it got worse and worse and worse and worse. And they had a major overgrowth of Candida Albicans. Thanks, Thea.
Syl is asking about Graves'. Well, look, Graves'... Okay, because somebody was asking about Hashimoto's. Graves' is hyperthyroid. Hashimoto's autoimmune, both are autoimmune. Hashimoto's is hypothyroidism. Here's the connection. Autoimmune. Leaky gut. Leaky gut, leaky thyroid usually starts with that. Your body's making antibodies to its own thyroid. I always, always, always treated either Graves' or Hashimoto's the same way. You know what? We're going to change your diet. We're going to get you off the carbs because I want your liver to expel estrogen. I want your liver clean so that it will convert T4 to T3. We're going to fix your leaky gut because that's where it all started. We're going to get rid of the yeast and one way to get rid of yeast is you not to feed it and sugar feeds it. Probiotics, big time. Vitamin D, big time. Check your deficiencies. That was Syl.
Theresa. "What do you think about CT calcium scoring?" Well, I tell you just an overarching principle of it. Okay. Here's the problem. They scared the living life out of you because I had someone, can't even remember if it was through a friend or whatever. They asked me this. I said, well, you got some calcium. You got atherosclerosis. Okay. Who doesn't? As you get older or whatever, look, it's a tool in the toolbox, but it's not everything. And I'm telling you, I've talked to people, they're under so much stress because they told them that their calcium, their coronary artery calcium score was high. I said, "well, you ain't going to die of that. You're going to die of a heart attack because you got so much stress worrying about it." Take vitamin D with K2. Eat a lot of K2. See what K2 does, it takes calcium out of your blood and puts it in your bones where it belongs. Eat it. Eggs, meat, and cheese. That's how you get K2. We put it in our... I got it right here. Vitamin D with K2. Good for you. Okay. "My primary doctor panicked and I could drop dead." Well, you could drop dead, but it won't be from that. And then they want to put you on a statin drug. Okay. What's that got to do with lowering your calcium? Statin drugs are there to lower your LDL cholesterol. But what did I tell you? Any excuse they can find to put you on a statin drug.
Louise, "my husband was put on potassium chloride," usually because Louise, okay? Correct me if I'm wrong, but they don't put you on potassium chloride for nothing. Why did they put you on that? Because you're already on a high blood pressure medication. And now your potassium is low, right? You're on a diuretic or whatever. Now your potassium goes down. Usually due to medication, sometimes kidney disease, but it's usually due to medication. I don't want them to eat a banana every day. Well, banana is not the best source of potassium anyways. It's a source. Bacon is better. Louise, have your husband start his day every day with bacon. Seven days a week. Going to get lots of potassium. Isn't that beautiful? It's good for the heart.
Shelley, "I've been on EMC for two years." Good for you. Smart girl. "Recently, I had a few veggies, broccoli, green beans, cherry, tomatoes, because a nurse at Heartfitness made me feel guilty." I got no problem with you having broccoli by the way anyway. But the reason they make you feel guilty, Shelley, is because they don't know dittle about nutrition. Ask a nurse how much nutrition they took in nursing school. Not much. And when they did, it was all the old, same old, same old. Cholesterol, bad. Meat, bad. Eggs, bad. Butter, bad. Vegetables, good. You're taught that. I was taught that. That's why she's making you feel guilty, Shelley, even though you feel fantastic, even though you're not missing anything, but they can't help it. They have the can't help its. They are so cholesterol crazy they can't help themselves. It's their training.
And then according to the nurse and a naturopathic doctor, well, guess what? Nutrition. Look, God love naturopaths, but they get the same training as medical doctors do pretty well on nutrition. They're not experts in nutrition. They're experts in natural medicine and homeopathy. I mean, God love them, but they still believe the same old stuff about cholesterol and LDL and they're out there to lower your cholesterol. Not me. I'm there to elevate your cholesterol. Who's right and who's wrong? Because Shelley's confused. Well, Shelley, I try to educate. You know where I come from and I'm consistent. So your nurse, you know what I used to tell my patients? There's a narrow road and there's a broad road. Okay. Jesus talked about two roads, but I talked two roads of health. You got a narrow road and very few people are on it. We look at food differently. We look at health differently and it's a narrow road, but it's the right road.
And then there's the world's road on health. Cholesterol. Bad. Heart disease is all cholesterol. No, it's not. They know nothing about food other than eat a lot of fiber. They're fiber nut cases and that's what they believe. And they're on the broad road and there's a lot of people on it. I try and bring my audience from the broad road over here to put them on a little narrow road. There's not many of us, but that's all right. We can encourage each other in the small little group that we are. I got over five million downloads, by the way, on my podcast. So people are listening and it's alternative, but don't be confused because I'm not confused. I'm not. I know there's other voices out there and they're more popular than me. Sun, steak and steel. There you go.
Okay. We better stop. We better stop because we got a lot more questions. We can do that on Monday. And by the way, it's a holiday Monday in Canada, not in the United States next weekend, isn't it? The Memorial ... let me see. I've got my calendar right in front of me. This Monday is a Victoria Day in Canada and next Monday, the 25th is Memorial Day in the US of A. I am planning to be on both Mondays. Okay? So it's not a holiday for me, but guys, when I'm doing this, it's a holiday. It's not work. It's a passion. I'm passionate. Okay? I'm passionate. So we're not taking Monday off. I had lots of fun. I don't know about you. Okay. Guys, we love you dearly, sincerely. Have a great weekend. Okay. See you on Monday. Talk to you soon.
