Announcer: You're listening to The Doctor Is In Podcast, brought to you by MartinClinic.com. During the episode, the doctors share a lot of information. As awesome as the info may be, it is not intended to diagnose, cure, treat, or prevent any disease. It's strictly for informational purposes.
Dr. Martin: Well, good afternoon everyone and hope you're having a wonderful start to your day. No, the end of your day. No, halfway through your day. Okay, so thanks for coming on this afternoon, guys. Afternoon session. So yesterday we talked about, I'd watched a video and it was in Congress, a congressional meeting. The witness was Dr. Callie Means, and she gave out some statistics that were just horrifying. And quickly, the average, and these were American statistics. So Canada, we're very similar when it comes to health. Okay? We're not healthier really. So we got big problem with chronic disease. As a matter of fact, when you look at the root of chronic disease, which is metabolic syndrome, what is metabolic syndrome? How your body turns food into energy. And when you have an energy disruption, you're in trouble. That's 93% of the population do not process. Their metabolism does not process energy properly. You got an energy problem.
And the stats where six out of 10 adults have some form of chronic disease. The average American sees 28 doctors in their lifetime. 74% of adults are overweight or obese. 14 prescriptions on average a year, 50% have a diagnosis of mental illness in their lifetime. Guys, we got a problem. And then we talked about kids. She gave some very frightening statistics. Fatty liver, 18% of children in the United States have fatty liver. Well, there's only one way you get fatty liver, guys. There's only one way to get fatty liver. And that means you're a carboholic or a sugarholic. That's why. And kids, what they don't realize is they're drinking their sugar. The worst thing you can do is not eat sugar. It's drinking, especially in the form of high fructose corn syrup. Right to your liver, destructive fatty liver. 30% of teens are prediabetic.
And if you're prediabetic, it means your A1C is elevated. I never thought in my lifetime, unless it was type one diabetes, which I saw a lot of, but to have adult onset, even pre-diabetes or elevated A1C, guys, I never thought in my lifetime I would ever see it. And then the last 15 years of my practice was metabolic syndrome, if not more than that. In kids, overweight or obese, 40% of teen. And then she went on to say, look, we got more cancer, more heart disease, more depression, more autoimmune, more Alzheimer's, more diabetes, and more kidney disease than we used to. Not getting better, it's getting worse. So we spent some time on that. And again, it was a negative session because I brought you into the background of why.
Why did it happen to us? How do we allow it to happen? Well, we got lied to and we went into a lot of detail about the food industry and the pharmaceutical industry. They hijacked medicine. The food industry said, "Don't study nutrition. We'll do it. And we're going to lower fat intake. We're going to lower cholesterol intake and we're going to be fat free and just trust us. And we'll actually train dieticians. We'll do the training." So the food pyramid was upside down, grains and cereal. Man, they had pop-tarts. They had pop-tarts in a healthy food category. And they put a heart on the box of cereal because you've got to have a heart attack if you eat it. So that's why.
And then we went into a couple of things, barely touched them. We're overfed and undernourished. We're very nutrient deficient guys. I never seen anything because I used to test for it, of huge nutritional deficiencies. B12, heme iron, which is really important for red blood cell production. Vitamin D is zinc. People's immune system, it doesn't work without zinc and it doesn't work without vitamin D. And we're deficient. Vitamin D, if you couldn't get in the sun at one time, at least you can eat it every day because vitamin D is a fat soluble vitamin. There's some vitamin D. This is why the Inuit, for example, that never see the sun or they're not sunbathing. They might see the sun, but they're not sun bathing. Why are they all right with their vitamin D levels? Well, they eat it every day and they eat it every day. Cod liver oil, right? They eat nothing but fat.
So we got major nutrition deficiencies. One of the biggest nutritional deficiencies, I've talked about this, is selenium. Your thyroid doesn't work like people think iodine. Yep. Iodine's important for your thyroid, but so is selenium. And selenium is a very, very important mineral. So we got the macros wrong and because of it, we're deficient. We're carb loaded and animal protein and fat deficient where all the vitamins are. We got microbiome issues. You look at the world, everything wants to strip away your good bacteria from antibiotics, which carpet bomb your microbiome. You want to know why we got so much autoimmune today? Autoimmune always, in my opinion, starts in the gut. MS, Parkinson's. How does stuff get into the brain to damage the brain? How does a fungus get into the brain? How does mercury, lead, cadmium? How does it get in there? Well, it needs a transporter yeast. It piggybacks. How does yeast get into your bloodstream? Through leaky gut.
Look, everybody has a little bit of yeast stuck. Stays in your gut. It's not the end of the world if it's a little bit. As long as it's being beaten down by your good bacteria. But we got a real problem with the gut today because of everything that destroys the microbiome from meds like NSAIDs, like just over the counter stuff. People live on Advil and they live on that kind of stuff. Well, doc, I got a headache. Hey, I feel for you. I feel for you. If you're getting headaches every day though, you got to get to the root issue. You just don't want to put a bandaid on it. So we got the microbiome and we got today. And guys, you know this is true. Like we got today, we got people that have so much allergies compared to what we used to. Why? Well, look inside before you look outside. Why do we have that? Leaky gut, guys. Your body, it's meant to have a barrier between your blood and your gut. And I call them the borders. You've got a blood brain barrier up here. In the brain, that's your northern border. The southern border is between your gut and your blood. Your blood should be pristine, guys.
The life of the flesh is in the blood. Your blood should be clean. It's lifesaving. But you get garbage in there through leaky gut. Your body reacts to the garbage. It creates an auto, right? Self, immune. We got microbiome problems. And then of course, we're feeding the bears. Remember that? That goes back probably more to my radio days. But I talked about feeding bears. Okay? Where I come from, there's actually signs on the road that tell you don't feed the bears. Like I said, are we crazy? Who's feeding the bears? Here, bear? Come and feed out of my hand. No, they meant don't leave your garbage around. That's what they meant. But the signs to me were, okay, I'm going to take that and we're going to call yeast bears and don't feed it because yeast loves sugar. Yeast is like a kid in a candy shop. It just wants sweets. Yeast hates steak. It hates it. It can't feed on it. It needs sugar.
So don't feed the bears, but that's one of the biggest issues with the microbiome. You get leaky gut maybe because of antibiotics and the carpet bombing. And you get leaky gut. Now you've got an invasion at the southern border. It'll go across the northern border too, man, once they get in. And yeast takes over the body. That's why we have so much. And some doctors say this. Do I agree with them? It's part of the answer, but they say, like I've listened to even pathologists and oncologists talk about every cancer is a fungus. There's a yeast growing. Guys, you ever see mold? And when it will invade a bathroom? Well, yeast is its cousin. It's not good. And it gets in the sinuses. It gets in the lungs. It gets in the brain. It goes on the skin. What do you think psoriasis is? What do you think eczema is? It's fungal. And doctor's solution is to give you prednisone. I understand why they do it. But man, oh man, you're even destroying the microbiome even more.
And I know it's an anti-inflammatory and it's terrible to have bad skin and things like that, but I'm just telling you. We got microbiome issues. We got environmental issues. Guys, you can run, but you can't hide. I don't care where you go on the planet. I don't care if you go someplace pristine. Plastic is everywhere. It's in the water. It's on Mount Everest. It's in the placenta of babies. It's in your body, guys. If you think you don't accumulate any plastic in your body, I'm sorry, but you do. What is it? A credit card and a half, the size of a credit card and a half, a plastic we accumulate in the body. Guys, you don't want to have leaky gut. But again, I've always said this for the last 40 years or so, we live in a toxic soup. Herbicides and pesticides, they're everywhere. And we wonder why we're so sick. And then we have sedentary lifestyle.
Our world has changed, guys. People are an actor. They see children and they're on their devices. And then we have Netflix syndrome. We sit and watch movies and TV. And look, I love movies too. I'm not saying anything. I just say, man, the average person just doesn't move enough. We have sedentary lifestyle. We have chronic stress. Like we talked about environmental stress, but we have stress like never before. I wrote a book way back. I mean, we're going back a long time ago on chronic fatigue syndrome. You know what I said it was? Adrenal gland exhaustion. You know how you get adrenal gland exhaustion from chronic stress. Cortisol is meant to be temporary. You don't want to give it a 24 hour a day job, but we live in that kind of world that everything's coming at us at a hundred miles an hour from the news and information. And it just seems the world spins at a faster rate than it used to.
Chronic fatigue syndrome came out of that. It was women, mostly. And they were a hormonal mess because cortisol pours gasoline on the fire of hormones. The thyroid gets out of whack. Estrogen goes through the roof. Insulin and insulin resistance. And you don't feel good. Guess what you reach for? Carbs? You want a quick fix. And the food industry is right there to feed you, right? Right there to feed you because their snacks are relatively cheap. And what do you reach for? Bag of chips or... no wonder we're so sick. I already talked to you about antibiotics. Antibiotics are the greatest discovery of the 20th century, but I predicted it. I predicted it not a prophet nor the son of one, but I predicted the overuse of antibiotics will come to haunt us. It's saved millions and millions and millions of people's lives. And guess what, folks? Now we're seeing the overuse of it and they were warned, but they still do it. And now you have resistance and they don't even talk about what it does to your microbiome. The carpet bomb. I said it.
When they were looking at even mental health issues and autism. I mean, I never even heard of autism when I was in school. When I graduated in 1974, if someone said, "Autistic, I what? What are you talking about? I never heard of that." And then they give you what about a 70 something vaccine. In the 1950s, kids got one vaccine or two. They give you 70 something now. Before the age of what, two or three? What do you think that does? To the canaries in the coal mine? And then we have an enormous problem with sleep today. It's a big issue. And when we study sleep and the importance of it. I had a few friends, man. They could run 24 hours a day, it seems. And one of them told me one time, "Oh, sleep is overrated." Because they just felt they were wasting their time sleeping when they could be doing something. Of course, I pushed back on that because you understand the body. It needs to shut down.
Your body has a self-cleaning oven, especially your brain. You need to be sleeping. Look, your brain takes 25% of all your energy. All your food, 25% goes to the federal government there. Your taxes. It's only 2% of your body weight, but it takes 25% of your food for energy. It's a manufacturing thing. And guys, when you have manufacturing for energy, mitochondria, you're going to have debris. You're going to have lots of it. You're going to have waste. You better get rid of it, but you don't get rid of it unless you're sleeping. And I don't mean sedated. I mean sleeping. And we don't get sleep. 70, 80% of the population have trouble sleeping. And stress is involved because cortisol is to wake you up. Cortisol is part of the fight or flight, not the rest and digest. Cortisol should be down to nothing when you go to sleep at night, but people are revved up. They're wired, but tired. And your self-cleaning oven, the glymphatic system doesn't work unless you're sleeping. That's a fact. No wonder we got a problem.
And then just lastly, a lack of sun. I talked about low vitamin D, but let me tell you about the sun that they made the boogeyman. I got to do a session one time, but just let's talk about boogeyman. Cholesterol, boogeyman. Fat, boogeyman. Sun, boogeyman. Look, I can understand you want to cover up. You don't want to burn in the sun. I understand that. I preach that. But I'll tell you when you burn too, by the way. This is just an antidotal perhaps and a little bit. But I can tell you with experience with patient. I always tell people, look, I'm not a researcher in that sense. I was a clinician. I saw tens of thousands of patients. So I got clinical research. Okay? It's not really double blind and placebo stuff and all that. No, not like that. Just clinical stuff.
You know what I found with people? When they got off eating the junk, when they got off all those seed oils, what do we do in the world? We changed the sugar. We changed the flour. It's devoid of nutrients. And we changed the oil. We went from butter to seed oil to Crisco. Thank Proctor and Gamble. They found a way to take oil and heat it up and it's good for your car, but it ain't good for your body. And I'll tell you, that has been a big, big problem because you burn when you eat a lot of that. That's been my experience. When you get off those seed oils and you start eating eggs, meat, and cheese, you start eating real food. You know what? You'll be surprised how much more sun that you can take. I've seen that many, many a times in my practice. Okay? Is that science? I don't know, but it's what I know.
So don't burn in the sun, but by word, the sun. Every cell in your body has a receptor for it. Your T cells, your Navy seals of your immune system don't work properly without it. And people are so scared of vitamin D. Doctors have been hoodwinked. Your vitamin D is toxic, but they've never seen a case. They've never seen a case. They've never anyone ever gone into the hospital and they said, "Here's what it is. You got high vitamin D and you're dying." They've never seen a case. But you try and change the government's mind and physician's minds very hard. And by the way, the numbers of vitamin D. They made a big boo-boo. It was a math mistake. And people got just enough vitamin D if they were a mouse, not a human being. And they have no idea because nobody's telling them. Why are we so sick? Yeah. All of the above that I talked about. Get in the sun. Even if it's in the middle of the winter, get in the sun. Let the sun come into your eyes. You're making melatonin. That'll give you a better sleep.
Anyway, guys, tomorrow's Q&A. Okay? It's always popular and I can't wait for tomorrow because of the Q&A. Question and answer Friday. Is it too late? I don't think so. Info@martinclinic.com. You got questions? Maybe you got questions about what we talked about. Okay, love you guys. Talk to you soon.
