TRANSCRIPT OF TODAY'S EPISODE

Announcer:  You're listening to The Doctor Is In Podcast, brought to you by MartinClinic.com. During the episode, the doctors share a lot of information. As awesome as the info may be, it is not intended to diagnose, cure, treat, or prevent any disease. It's strictly for informational purposes.

Dr. Martin:  Good afternoon, everyone. How are you doing? Hope you're having a great afternoon. Guys, thank you for coming on. Okay? So let me talk about a few things. One of the things that I talked about last week, I just mentioned it because somebody asked me another question about it, is selenium. Okay? And when it comes to the thyroid, we always talk about iodine and rightly so. Don't think that iodine isn't significant. It really is significant for your thyroid, but a lot of people, they never knew this is selenium. And we talked about it last week because selenium is sort of a forgotten mineral. Your thyroid don't work properly. And what people don't realize, and if I asked you a question, why can you eat tuna? Okay. If I asked you that question, why can you eat tuna? It's a big fish. And they've tested all this that tuna, because it's a bigger fish, has more mercury in it. But why is it not dangerous if it has more mercury in it? Selenium. Selenium detoxes the mercury.

Selenium, and one of the ways selenium works is by elevating your glutathione. Glutathione happens to be your Velcro you have inside your system. Your body makes glutathione. Okay? It's a combination of three amino acids and it's Velcro. It attaches itself to heavy metals, yeast, toxins, mold. That's why glutathione is so important. And one of the precursors to glutathione is selenium. Now, pine bark extract elevates your glutathione too, besides elevating your nitric oxide. It's another reason that I love pine park extract, Navitol. Okay, because somebody asked me, they didn't understand when I said well, you can eat mercury. Let me rephrase that. You can eat tuna. My wife loves tuna. And I'm not worried about that because of tuna's got selenium in it. And someone posted this the other day, that Brazilian nuts. I don't disagree that you got some selenium in Brazilian nuts.

Here's what I know. The bioavailable selenium is found in the animal kingdom. I'm not saying, you want to have some Brazilian nuts? Well, how many of them are you going to eat to get the amount of selenium that you would get, for example, in tuna or in an egg or in dairy or in meat like steak? It's the bioavailability of it. Okay. We talked about that. I flagged something and you think I can find it. Hold on a minute. I know I will because I've got my notepad right in front of me. Oh, by the way, there was another study that came out. We did this again last week. We talked about sleep. And in neuroscience.com, they talked about the self-cleaning oven again. Isn't that fascinating, guys? And it was discovered. You know when they discovered the glial, the glymphatic system, your glial cells, and it's not connected to the rest of your lymphatic system. The brain has its own drainage system, and it's attached to your circadian rhythm. You need to be sleeping for your self cleaning oven to come on. It don't come on unless you're sleeping.

Now, I used to say this to patients all the time, because patients used to say, "Well, doc, I don't sleep." Okay? You better put yourself down for a power nap in the afternoon then. You're not sleeping at night. Do a power nap. And by the way, I suggest a power nap for every individual on the planet. If you can do it, do it. Because temporarily, your self-cleaning oven will come on in your brain, even on the power nap. Think of your brain for a minute, guys. Okay? Think of your brain. 2% of your body weight, but takes 25% of your food as energy up in the brain. It's only 2% of your body weight, but it's an energy hog. It's like AI. Okay? We talked about that. I don't know anything about AI, guys. I know nothing. Other than if you'd have told me about AI 25 years ago, I said, "You're crazy. What are you talking about? " But AI is a big thing now, and every country is racing to be ahead in AI. But one thing we know about AI, you need lots of energy to run AI. Okay? You need a lot of energy.

So your brain, AI, you need a lot of energy. 25% of all the food that you eat first goes to your noggin. Well, with that, anytime you have your energy, your mitochondria, your battery packs, flooded with energy, you're going to have a lot of metabolic debris. You have a manufacturing plant, it's manufacturing, you're going to have waste, right? You're going to have waste. And the glial cells, your glympphatic system, your brain has a built-in. So again, when it comes to sleep, there's no substitute, guys. There's no substitute. Sun, steak, steel, and sleep, and I meant it. There's no substitute for it. You need to sleep. And a lot of people don't sleep, especially in the last 20 years. I used to mention this on my radio show all the time. 70% of North Americans have trouble sleeping. They never get into a REM sleep. There's a lot of anxiety. Your cortisol's up, you don't sleep. You don't sleep, your cortisol's up. It's a vicious cycle.

I talked about sleep 35 years ago in a book. I talked about sleep because we saw a sleep disorder in patients who had chronic fatigue syndrome. They were exhausted, but didn't sleep and they weren't getting into their REM sleep. That rapid eye movement sleep, which is you got five stages of sleep, but you need all five. And again, I just say with a little asterisk here, medication won't do it because now you're knocked out. You're sedated. You don't want to sedate your brain. You want your brain to be into a natural sleep. And it's a big problem. We'd all agree with that. There's nobody going to say, "Well, Dr. Martin is exaggerating." No, I'm not exaggerating. But when it comes to Alzheimer's, okay? Now we know with Alzheimer's, that's type three. Okay? Type three diabetes. So sugar is the biggest problem. Insulin is the biggest problem, but the lack of sleep and the lack of debris. Okay?

Because if you look at a brain, an Alzheimer's brain, if someone calls you fat head, you take it as a compliment because your brain is made up of fat and a healthy brain has got lots of fat. An Alzheimer's brain on MRI, it shrinks like a prune. And one of the things, not only oxidative damage, but when you don't get rid of that debris, and like I said, your glymphatics are not attached to the rest of your lymphatics. It's their own discovered in 2012. We didn't even know. I didn't know if the brain had its own self-cleaning oven. Anyhow, okay. I was laughed at when I wrote my book on chronic fatigue syndrome and talked about the lack of sleep and how damaging that was in CFS, chronic fatigue. Some of them changed the name to ME. Myosencephalitis or whatever, big name, in the inflammation of the brain, but it was real. And I wrote about it. I talked about cortisol and I talked about sleep way back when.

Okay, let's see. Here's a question that came out the other day, okay? And I didn't answer, but I said, okay, let me flag this and I will answer it. I actually got two of them that I didn't answer. Somebody asked, "How much protein do you need?" Look, I'm into measuring some stuff. If you ask me how much water do you need, I'll tell you 99.9% of the population needs 64 ounces or two liters of water a day. Okay? I'll tell you that right away. I'll tell you the sweet spot of coffee. Four cups of coffee. You get the best results. Four cups of coffee a day. So to say that I don't measure, I measure. But when it comes to protein, I don't measure. Some people do. How many grams of protein is in there? I don't know and I don't care. All I want my audience to know, what I wanted my patients to know was protein was king. Protein was the king of the castle out of your three groups of food. Okay? Protein was the king of the castle and carbs were the dirty rascal compared to protein.

So you have protein, fat, and you have carbohydrates. What I love in the animal kingdom, guys, what I love in the animal kingdom, you give me an egg. What do you have in an egg? Well, you got protein. Big time. You got fat. Big time. Very good. You got saturated fat. Yeah, it's good for you. Okay? Now, meat. You got protein. You got fat. The way you're supposed to eat food, guys. You got dairy. Protein. Fat. No carbs. You look at yogurt, for example, but a full fat yogurt. Like Greek plain yogurt. Okay? What do you got? Read the label. I got a lot of protein. You got fat. Don't get fat free yogurt. And you got a little bit of carbs because dairy has some sugar. You have the lactose. You got sugar, tose, O-S-E. You got some sugar in there, but it's naturally occurring. It's very minimal. So to say Dr. Martin doesn't like carbs, no. It's just that I don't want you to emphasize them. You know what I'm saying? No, because compared to protein, they're the dirty rascal. Protein is the king of the castle. But I really like the combination of protein and fat.

Now, do I measure? No. I don't measure. I refuse to when it comes to that. You understand it. Okay? I don't like to limit people. If you want to have, for example, you know this because we talk about this a lot, is when it comes to weight loss. Okay, I had a weight loss clinic. Never, ever, ever did I count calories. I just didn't do it. You wanted to count calories? You came to the wrong clinic, I used to tell people. You want to measure? I want to measure you because we're going to measure you. And I'm much more interested in your body burning off fat than burning off muscle. I said, if you stop and I'll give you for an example, Dr. Bernstein, the Bernstein weight loss clinics, 600 calories and B12 shots. Now, I like the B12 shots. I did. That's why again, guys, when it comes to your metabolism, vitamin B12 is very essential. Dr. Bernstein knew that if he gave you a B12 shot once a week, it would help with weight loss, but no wonder you were eating 600 calories a day. That's a mouse.

But when you don't count, okay? When you don't count, because my goal was for people to change fuels. I wanted them to change their fuel from mostly carbohydrate, breads and pastas and noodles and rice and cereals and juices and store bought milk and that kind of stuff. I wanted people to change that. I said, that's the fuel you live on. Oh, Dr. Martin, it's whole grain. I heard that a million times. It's whole grain. It's oat meal. Isn't that good? No, it's good if you're a horse, but you don't happen to be a horse. So oats ain't for you. Okay? Yeah, but Dr. Martin, what about steel cut? Steel cut. I said, no, sun, steak and steel. Have bacon in the morning. Better for you than steel cut oatmeal. Bacon's a lot better for you. So are sausages. Well, a lot better for you because our biggest problem in society today is insulin. It's insulin. Your pancreas was never meant, never, never, never, never, never meant to secrete the amount of insulin that people secrete. Your pancreas was never, ever meant for your body to live on carbohydrates. Your pancreas was never meant for the 200 pounds of sugar that the average North American consumes a year, a dump truck load of sugar.

And then especially your pancreas was never meant, and your liver was never meant to be storing the amount of fructose. You're not a bear. You're not going into hibernation. A bear will eat up to 30,000 blueberries to fatten up, and that goes right to its liver. And then when the liver's full, it starts producing an enormous amount of fat so that the bear can sleep for several months. You're not a bear. And then they changed the sugar to high fructose corn syrup for heaven's sakes. I was screaming. John the Baptist in the wilderness. Don't do it. Don't eat it. My degree in nutrition taught me that fructose was broken down differently. It makes a beeline for your liver. And if you want to have an orange, you'll never hear Dr. Martin say, "Well, you shouldn't be eating an orange." You want to have an orange? Have an orange. Don't drink it. You want to have an apple? An apple a day keeps the. No, it don't. A steak a day keeps the doctor away. An egg a day keeps the doctor away. Not an apple. Okay? Although you can have an apple. You want to have an apple? Have an apple. Just don't drink it. Don't go to Starbucks and drink their whatever. They make up those concoctions with fructose. Don't do it. Okay?

You guys, I know you got the memo. But a lot of people, we have new people on all the time. Every day we get a new audience and I'm a repeat guy. It's good for me to repeat. I need to hear it. I was saying to someone the other day, because they said, "Oh doc, you were aiming at me?" I said, "Well, before I aimed at you, I was talking to me. I can't give good teaching unless I talk to me first." Okay? You know when they point your finger at someone? Seems to me I've got three pointed back at me. That's the way it ought to be because I try and live, guys, what I teach you. I try and live by that. I really do. I practice what I preach. And so how much protein? Well, I don't care. One thing about protein. You have bacon and eggs and they've proven this a thousand times, by the way. Okay? If you have bacon and eggs in the morning, ham and egg, sausage and eggs, whatever the way you like it. They measured leptin and ghrelin. They measured this. They know exactly what's happening.

When you have bacon and eggs compared to toast, compared to cereal for breakfast, the amount of leptin telling you you're full and ghrelin telling you you need to eat again. There's no comparison, guys. It's the best thing you can do because protein satisfies. Fat, saturated. See, they look at fat. Okay? I'm going to show you fat here. Let me get it out because I have it right on my table here. I've got a prop right in front of you. Okay? I'm going to show you fat. There's a pound of fat. I only lost five pounds. You lost a lot of fat. And if you eat the right food, you are burning fat. That's why it's not calories. Because if you starve yourself on 600 calories a day, you'll lose weight, but you're not going to lose fat. You're going to lose muscle. And you don't want to lose muscle. That's the problem with Ozempic. And that's the problem with Wegavi or Wegavy or whatever stinking and they call it V. That's the problem because the second you stop, and most people do, after a year, too many side effects, they stop. They can't handle it.

And they stop and guess what happens? Guess what happened with Dr. Bernstein's weight loss clinic? Why didn't I do that? I could have done that. You come in, you get weight. They used to come in once a week anyway. Get weighed. We weighed your fat percentage, how much fat you lost, not muscle. And we'd pump up your tires. I could have done the Bernstein thing. I knew what it was. You eat 600 calories a day. Okay? And you come in every week for a B12 shot. Oh. Well, what happens when you stop that? You're not going to Bernstein's weight loss clinic the rest of your life. What happens when you stop? Well, what happens on every yo-yo diet? The weight comes back. The long-term forecast was very poor. Why? Well, because you're not going to be living on 600 calories the rest of your life. You just won't do it. You're not going to be going to get a B12 shot in a doctor's office every week. You just won't do it. I wouldn't recommend that for anybody, by the way. I'd recommend the B12, but I wouldn't recommend 600 calories.

Again, I want protein to be the king of the castle. And when I say protein, you got fat coming with it because I believe in animal protein. It's far superior to any protein anywhere. It's far superior to the plant kingdom, and it comes with fat. Isn't that wonderful? Yeah. You can call me Fat Head anytime. I love it when you say it. Okay, so this week, just let me give you the schedule that we have planned so far. Always subject to change. Tomorrow morning, Thursday afternoon. Okay? Friday morning. That's the plan. Okay? Q&A Friday. And for those on our private Facebook book club on the Rebuild Your Temple, I'll be on there live Friday morning at eight o'clock. I go in live. Okay, at eight o'clock, just a short devotional. Okay, guys, we love you. We'll talk to you soon.
