Announcer: You're listening to The Doctor Is In Podcast, brought to you by MartinClinic.com. During the episode, the doctors share a lot of information. As awesome as the info may be, it is not intended to diagnose, cure, treat, or prevent any disease. It's strictly for informational purposes.
Dr. Martin: Well, good morning everyone. Once again, welcome to another live this morning. Hope you're having a great start to your day. We appreciate you coming on here this morning. Thanks for coming on, guys. We appreciate it. Instant benefits from ditching sugar. That's what we're going to talk about today. Instant benefits from lowering sugar. When you do the reset, guys, all these years, we've been recording in my office days when I saw patients. These were the common things that came back. Now, we talked about this during the reset. When you do the reset, a lot of things happen. But I just want to talk about people, and this is consistent. The benefits when you cut sugar out of your diet. One of the goals of the reset is to get people off sugar, because they can't have it for 30 days. It's amazing what happens.
And you know what I used to tell my patients in my office, is if you do nothing else after this visit with me. And I tried to put them on the reset eggs, meat, and cheese, because I did it with 99.9% of all my patients, and I mean that. I gave them a plan. It didn't matter what the problem was. They had to eat anyways, so I was trying to put them on the reset for a lot of reasons. Anti-inflammatory, anti-insulin, insulin resistance, and you name it. But I have had people, and all they did was cut out sugar. They just cut out sugar. They didn't have any more sugar. I mean, like almost zero. And they said, "Doc, I couldn't believe how much sugar I consumed in a day. It's incredible. I never, of course, counted it until you made me aware of it." I'm going to give you 10 things, and maybe there's more, but I just sort of jotted these down. 10 things that we got back in our office, people that just cut out sugar out of their diet. Just sugar.
First of all, the average North American is consuming between 150 and 200 pounds of sugar a year. A dump truck load. Okay? You think your body was made for that? Absolutely not. Okay? Here's what we consistently found, and we'll talk about these. Number one, if you think this isn't important, this is really important. Your risk of diabetes. Type two, adult onset, the new name for it, but the old name used to be sugar diabetes. Okay? Remember, when I was a kid in high school, it was called sugar diabetes. You got sugar diabetes. Very rare. My dad got it. Sugar diabetes. Okay? So guess what? You cut out sugar. Shocking. Your diabetes will go away. If you're pre-diabetic, it's amazing.
Number two, weight loss. I don't know how many people. Thousands and thousands of patients over the years. And I'm not even talking reset, guys. If you do the resets even better because. Anyway, I want you to eat and I want you to eat the best foods. That's why I always talk about eggs, meat, and cheese, right? The EMC. But when you cut out sugar, not only is your risk of diabetes like tanking, which is fantastic, which think about it. Okay? Think about it for a minute. The most chronic diseases that are killing us, and all the tea in China is not going to fix is what's happening in North America today. Whether you live in Canada or the USA, it don't matter. What's killing Canadians and Americans is diabetes one, but it's insulin resistance.
And guys, you know this at 93% of the population and that is the root cause of heart disease, cancer. Alzheimer's, type three diabetes, remember what it used to be called, diabetes itself. These are your big killers, guys. Okay? The only thing that beats these things is people get killed in car accidents, but these are the big killers. And then you add autoimmune, because I always add that because it's a terrible proliferation in autoimmune today. So now you're decreasing, just cutting out sugar. You're decreasing all of that risk. You're decreasing this. You're not eliminating all the risk, but you're decreasing it. Big time. Okay?
Let's talk about blood pressure because we were asked this morning. I saw it on the scroll. I had, over the years, thousands, not hundreds, thousands of patients tell me that after they cut out sugar in their diet. It was incredible to them. Their blood pressure normalized. Okay? Their blood pressure. Well, one of the biggest effects of sugar. Sugar left unintended in the bloodstream is very detrimental. We talk about this all the time, but where it is extremely important is kidney function. Okay? Kidney function. When insulin is high, when sugar is high, sugar affects kidneys big time. And when you consume too much sugar, your body retains salt. It retains it. And that's a big, big thing for blood pressure. When the kidneys retain salt, so don't blame salt for what sugar is doing. Your body's retaining that sodium because you're consuming sugar. Kidneys, major effect. I'm not even talking about what happens in your eyes, what happens in the brain, what happens ... No, we'll talk about that.
But what people found when they cut out sugar, jeeper's my blood pressure. How many thousands would be able to come off their BP medication? And doctors are. Look, I feel sorry for them. They're so ignorant at times. Like the cardiologists, they always blame salt for what sugar was doing. You got to eat salt-free. I have a friend of mine that was in the hospital, well, he's in the hospital, and I talked to him yesterday on the phone, and he said, because he's in there with heart problems and they won't give him any salt. They want to be salt-free. And he says, "Everything tastes terrible in here without salt." I said, "Yeah, and the problem is it's sugar. It ain't salt. It ain't salt. It's sugar." You cut out sugar and a lot of people have found this out by experience. Their blood pressure normalizes and they shock their doctors because they say, "Well, can I try without any medication for my blood pressure now?" And doctors are reluctant because, "Oh no, it was because I put you on medication that your blood pressure stabilized." Never even considered food for one minute, never considered sugar to be a culprit and how it affects the kidneys.
You know what other thing happens? This is very good for your heart because think what happens. You cut out sugar and your triglycerides go down. So what causes triglycerides? Three, try glycerides, fat. What causes three fat balls in the blood? Okay? Sugar. Sugar. You eat a lot of sugar stored in your liver and your body has glycoten. And when that gets all packed up with fat in the liver, your body responds to that. It says, "Okay, let's empty the liver of some fat." And it sends fat balls into the bloodstream in the form of triglycerides. Now, you and I know this because I talk about this all the time. One of the biggest risks is not cholesterol for your heart. It's triglycerides and low cholesterol. It's the opposite of what the world teaches out there, even today. Here we are in 2026 and they're still talking cholesterol. Better lower your cholesterol. You better lower it. And it gives me a migraine that we're still talking about this stuff like that. Yeah, migraine. Okay?
Now, when you lower your sugar intake, you're going to lower your triglycerides. And you know what? It's a teeter totter. It's a teeter totter. So when your triglycerides come down, your HDL goes up. Isn't that beautiful? Exactly what you want. You want more Amazon, FedEx, Canada Post, US post trucks on the highways and byways of your blood vessels. Why? Because cholesterol's not the boogeyman. Cholesterol, your body needs it. Every cell in your body needs cholesterol. Plus, your liver produces cholesterol. And the reason it does it is it because it's sending out hormones. They go out with hormones. Okay? Testosterone, estrogen, progesterone. They go out. Okay? They go out of the liver and with these horror-mones, hormones. Okay? They deliver.
On the back of their truck, you ever see those trucks with two trailers? Right? Well, your cholesterol has two trailers. One, it's delivering hormones. And a lot of women ... I'm just going to say this. A lot of men too, but a lot of women, they have trouble with horrormones because they don't eat enough cholesterol. You've heard this on this program a million times. Eat cholesterol. God doesn't trust you. God don't trust you. Your body makes 85% of your cholesterol. You can't live without it. You cannot live without cholesterol. And even if you take a medication to hammer it down, which is silly, okay? Your body's still going to make some because you can't live without it. You'd be dead.
Think of those trucks on the highways. They're delivering. And then they got a wagon in the back. They got another trailer. And you know what they do? You know what HDL does? It takes triglycerides in your blood vessels. Dangerous. And says, "You get back in that wagon there and I'm bringing you back to the liver for processing. You're clogging up these arteries here. We're going to bring you out of here." That's why you want to have high HDL. And really, you want to have high LDL too. Don't tell anybody I told you that they go crazy because they got a medication to lower the LDL. And they say, "Well, LDL is bad. It's bad cholesterol." I learned that in the 1970s. It's bad cholesterol and it's not bad. The lower your LDL is, the faster you're going to die. Okay? Can you see people in their graves going, "Yeah, I'm dead, but boy, at least I got low cholesterol. I hammered my LDL down. Oh, I'm dead." You need LDL. Your immune system needs LDL. Your body needs LDL. It's not a bad guy.
You're blaming it like blaming the police. They're at the crime scene. Well, they're not the bad guy. They're there to help. Like the firemen at a fire in your blood vessels. Are they the bad guy? Get out of here, firemen. We got a fire going on. We don't want you around. How silly is that? That's what cholesterol is. Since when is it bad? When they made it bad. They lied and people died. Millions have died. Silly. I'm not moving off that. Follow the science, lower your triglycerides and elevate your cholesterol. Elevate it. In particular, your HDL cholesterol, high density lipoprotein. Don't get into the weeds. Just get it up. That's what happens when you cut out sugar. It's amazing. Your body goes, "Thank you. Thank you." That's a big effect on the heart. Has a big effect on the brain. You cut out sugar.
Your brain, look, you need some glucose in the brain. You don't need much, but you're going to get a little bit, but you eat a steak and you'll get glucose in your brain. Okay? So you don't need to eat sugar to get sugar. Your body, look, it's much better when it's burning fats like ketones. Okay? It's so much better for your brain. So when you cut out sugar, your body says, thank you. Your brain, cognitive. You know how many times brain fog and memory, short-term memory, so much better? And doc, all I did was cut out sugar. Yeah, because your body wasn't made for that. It wasn't made to live on sugar like that. Not the amount that we have.
Here's what I found too. This came back, I don't know, over the years, a thousand times. I don't know. I don't want to exaggerate, but lots of times. Doc, my headaches went away. My headaches went away. Yeah. Well, one of the biggest factors is in headaches. Okay? Look, obviously dehydration. Okay? A lot of people are dehydrated. They've got blood as thick as molasses and they don't know it. I'm not thirsty. Why would I drink water? Right? Why would I drink water? I'm not thirsty. And it's amazing how much water you need, especially when you're consuming sugar. Because your body, guys, listen to me. This is really important. Your body is dedicated. The world's not dedicated, but your body's dedicated to getting sugar out of your bloodstream. Remember, in a no parking zone, sugar does not belong in the bloodstream. Incy, weensy, teeny, weeny, yellow polka dot bikini size of sugar you need. You don't need much. You need very little. Your body's dedicated to keep that sugar out of there. Dedicated.
And one of the ways, you know what happens? Your body will suck. And I mean this, guys, and I've proven this to patients over the years. Your body will suck the water out of everywhere. Your bones, your tissue. It takes all the water and it puts it in the blood going, we need to clear this. Get the river moving to get the sugar out. And when you consume sugar, you get severely dehydrated because your body says, "Man, oh man, oh man, I got to get this sugar out of the bloodstream." And of course, insulin's got a big job to do. We're not even talking about that. But one of the things that happens is the water. I've seen this with people. Their heels are dry like sandpaper and their elbows like sandpaper. And I go, "Well, you know what? You're dehydrated. You know why? Because your sugars are high and your body's pulling the water out of your skin. It's pulling the water out of your skin to dilute the sugar." That's how your body operates. Your body knows what the world doesn't know. Moderation. Have a Coke. Have a Pepsi. You'll feel better. Have an orange juice. It's Tropicana. It's so good for you. No, it ain't-a because your body's got to deal with that boatload of sugar.
I remember going, I told you this before, going on a TV show years ago when I wrote a book. I can't even remember which one I wrote. I think it was Serial Killers, Two Hormones that Want You Dead. I can't remember if it was that one or one before. Anyway, I actually brought a prop on TV. Okay? You know what I brought? A glass of water, a bowl of sugar, and a teaspoon. And as I was being interviewed, I started putting sugar in the glass of water. I was just talking and the host is looking at me like I got two heads. What are you doing? And then when I got to 14, I stopped and I said, "Drink this." And he goes, "What? I ain't drinking that. That's all sugar." I said, "Yeah, that's what a Coke has got. That's what a Pepsi has. That's what orange juice has. That much sugar." I said, "Why won't you drink it? You drink Pepsi?" He said, "Yeah, I do. " I said, "Well, that's what you're drinking. It's just colored. It's just colored." I said, "You know what you're doing to your body?" I said, "Your body's dedicated to get that sugar out of there." Even after a Pepsi, 14 teaspoons. I said, "You know what your body's doing? It's going into a panic mode because it can't allow sugar to be in a no parking zone." He said, "What's the no parking zone?" I said, "Your blood vessels. Sugar destroys blood vessels. You don't believe me? Ask a diabetic." They know.
So what happens? A lot of headaches go away because you're not dehydrated anymore and you're drinking water, hopefully, right? It's amazing. Better horror-mones. I already talked to you about what your HDL does, carries hormones. Okay? When your liver's empty, guys, you remember me singing this song and I got in trouble with it. I hope I won't anymore because I've got to sing it. Six days on the road and I'm going to get a home tonight. Six days, you empty your liver. Cut out sugar for six days, you empty your liver. And when a liver is empty, oh, does it ever enjoy that? A liver works when it's empty because it's got a lot of work to do and it doesn't want fat because sugar's going to turn to fat in your liver. Fatty liver. You know when I graduated? Fatty liver. What? Cirrhosis of the liver. I know what that is. Fatty liver? What's fatty liver? Never heard of it. No such thing as fatty liver. See, because we never seen it. It wasn't even in our medical textbooks. Fatty liver wasn't in medical textbooks in 1970 because nobody had fatty liver. If they did, nobody knew how to diagnose it. And today it's an epidemic. And you guys know this better than any other audience in the world. What happens in your liver doesn't stay in your liver. It ain't Vegus. What happens in your liver does not stay in your liver. It affects everything in your body because when your liver is all gummed up, you can't detox properly.
People say, "Dr. Martin, can I do a detox?" Yeah. Cut out the sugar. You'll detox. What? What about my bowel? Because they always think detox starts with the bowel. Should I eat more fiber? Dr. Martin? I know how to detox. I'm going to eat more fiber. No. Eat less sugar. And your liver, which is your major detox organ that produces glutathione, Velcro, right? Your liver. Keep it empty. Keep it empty. It works the night shift. You go to sleep, your liver detoxes you. As long as it's empty. You see what I'm saying? That's why you guys are superheroes. What? Well, you guys understand this. You guys are superheroes. You're so smart. You understand the poison that sugar is. It's a poison. Your body says, "No, I don't need that stuff." Dedicate it to get rid of it. And until it can't, that's what diabetes is. But way before, diabetes is the last thing to happen in the human body. It's not the first thing. It's the last thing. Your body, it fought and fought and fought and fought, and then it lost the battle. Oh, I got diabetes. Right? Well, diabetes probably started 20 years before that. It's incredible.
Let me tell you one thing that I saw. This is just a by the way. How much better the stomach became. How much better the bowel got. And I'll give you a third one. How much better the stomach got because the pH changes. The pH of your stomach, when you cut out sugar, your stomach wasn't made to consume that kind of sugar. You know what happens when you consume that sugar? Your pH goes up. You become sugar like crazy. You want in your stomach, okay? Your stomach. You want to be very acidic. More acidic than a lion's stomach because you got to break down steak. And that's what your body wants. Steak. You know what sugar does? Makes your stomach more alkaline. You don't want that. You want to be alkaline? Yes. But not in your stomach. This is why we have so much acid reflux and silent acid and people, they can't break food down. They got big tummy trouble. And I'm not saying it's only sugar, but it's a big factor.
The second one is your bowel. Why? What to think I'm bloated? Gurgling and I can't eat this and I can't eat that. Well, you remember sugar feeds the bad guys. Sugar feeds your bad guys in your gut. It feeds the bad bacteria and it feeds the third army, which is yeast, fungus. Fungus needs sugar. It hates steak. And then, ladies, this is for you. Amazing how many times I heard this. You know what, Dr. Martin? I'm not getting urinary tract infections like I used to. Hello? Because what causes urinary tract infections is really not bacteria. It's fungus. It's yeast. That's what gets in the lining. And then the E. Coli bacteria finds a spot on that inner wall of the bladder. But it's yeast, it's fungus. It's amazing what happens when you cut out sugar in your diet. There's more, but I got to stop.
Okay. I had a lot of fun today, but okay. You know what Friday is? Q&A. Okay. Friday's Q&A. So send in your questions, info@martinclinic.com. Don't be shy. Ask your questions. Okay?
