Dr. Martin answers questions sent in by our listeners in today's episode.
TRANSCRIPT OF TODAY'S EPISODE
Announcer: You're listening to The Doctor Is In Podcast, brought to you by MartinClinic.com. During the episode, the doctors share a lot of information. As awesome as the info may be, it is not intended to diagnose, cure, treat, or prevent any disease. It's strictly for informational purposes.
Dr. Martin: Well good morning everyone, and once again, how are you? Welcome to another live this morning. Hope you're having a great start to your day and Q and A Friday. We're going to have some fun, I'm sure of it. Okay, Joanne, "my husband went off statins in April after seven years. He is still on blood pressure pills and 81 milligram aspirin for blood thinner. Should he be taking ubiquinol?" I think he should. Absolutely. On the bottle it states not to take them upon blood pressure meds. Well, if you want to see me, Joanne, get a migraine. I just got one. Look the labeling laws in Canada like ubiquinol, which is so good for your heart and then they make you put on the bottle. If you're on blood pressure medication, what could be the possible side effect other than you'd feel better?
Your heart has millions of mitochondria in the muscles battery packs and coq10. Ubiquinol is one of the best things for it. I can't get over it. Hey, it's the laws in Canada and let me just give you a heads up. They're about to get worse. They're about to get worse. In my opinion. The pharmaceutical industry has taken over Health Canada and they always did, but they always owned it. But the healthcare products or the natural products had their own division. Now they want to blend that in. The pharmaceuticals want to get rid of supplements or they want to sell the supplements and it's unfortunate, but that's what's happening in Canada.
Connie, "is it safe to do intermittent fasting if you have hypothyroidism or does it stress it out more?" Wouldn't stress it out more. There's nothing wrong with intermittent fasting. You're not doing 48 hour fast or whatever. Intermittent fasting is really eating within windows and one of the best ways to do it, stop eating at six o'clock at night and don't eat till 10 o'clock in the morning or noon and now at noon you got 18 hours of fasting. A lot of people like that. Some people don't do well with that, but most people do. And with hypothyroid, I got no issue with that. I got no issue with that. It wouldn't stress it out more. Look, I mean everybody's different. Some people don't do quite as well with intermittent fasting, but the vast majority of people do and there's easier ways to do it. Intermittent fasting is at least 12 hours, preferably 14 hours of not eating. Try it. See how you feel.
Suzanne is wondering, "can high cortisol from stress," okay, "cause achy joints, hip and back problems similar to osteoarthritis?" Cause, good question. I don't think so much Suzanne cause, but remember what I always say about cortisol, it's an accelerant. If you already have inflammation, you're pouring gasoline on the fire of inflammation. So I wouldn't say that it causes achy joints or whatever, but it sure aggravates it. Aggravates it. That's where I lean on Suzanne, thank you for that question.
Cheryl is asking, "what does Dr. Martin think of pure copper cups if there's any benefit to them?" Well, copper, I mean almost like silver, like silver cups were used. The king had a silver cup. It was antimicrobial. Okay, copper antimicrobial. Copper is beneficial to some extent. Okay, so when you see copper bracelets, copper wristbands, copper bands for your elbow or whatever, is there any benefit at all? Yeah, maybe. Is it life changing? No. You want to get copper cups? I got no problem with it. It's just how much benefit are you really getting from copper cups? I got no problem. You want to drink out of a copper cup? No problem at all for me, how much benefit you get? It was like for years, like these copper bracelets, how many patients I saw that put on a copper bracelet on their wrist to get rid of arthritis?
And I mean I never laughed at that. I never did. But if they asked me, I'd say, well, if you got rheumatoid arthritis and you're putting on a copper bracelet, well good luck with that, okay? You got generalized arthritis? Maybe you get a little bit of a benefit. Hey, if it helps you, I got no problem with it. I used to tell my patients if I thought hanging you upside down from my office building would help you, I'd go up on the roof and hold your feet. Hey, if it helps you, go for it. But when you ask me my opinion about something, well like copper's all right, I got no problem with copper, but all the years of experience, 50 years, I never saw anything dramatic with copper. Do you know what I mean? I never did, but some people really liked them. Okay, copper cups ain't going to hurt you. Thanks for the question. It gets me to pontificate.
Theresa, "what supplements should a 33-year-old man take if he's diagnosed with Graves?" Well, Graves autoimmune, thyroid. Graves is hyper thyroid. The thyroid is going crazy. Woo spinning way too fast, right? And you can get a lot of symptoms from that. Your heart races, you're sweating, your metabolism is off the charts, you're losing weight for a lot of people. Your eyes can bulge out. Literally. I've seen it. So there's no magic, but I would do the reset for sure. Look, anytime it's autoimmune. I mentioned this even this week on our program. You know what? Always look to the gut, leaky gut, leaky thyroid, either Hashimoto's or the opposite Graves. Okay? So I would look, if you're looking for a supplement, I'd start with probiotics and that would be the one that with Graves I'd be really, really going. But the reset, eat properly. Probably need to be on the cortisol formula too that I would recommend they're connected. Okay, thanks for the question, Theresa.
Claude, how are you, Claude? "Doc, I enjoy soaking up the sunshine and all the vitamin D benefits. Sun, steak and steel. I was wondering if my skin is not burning in the sun, is it okay to spend hours in the sun?" Yeah, don't burn. But if you've got skin that's darkened usually and allows you to stay in the sun, I got no problem with it. I really don't. Just don't burn. So Claude, yeah, you get all the benefits. Look, your vitamin D tops up at 10,000, so you're not getting 20,000 in the sun. Your body stops it at 10. That's a good reason that I often recommend around 10,000 IUs of vitamin D a day. Your body tops up at 10,000, but good for you Claude. No shirt, no sun. Get those panels, those sun panels exposed. Very good for you.
Deb. "Ataxia. I recently heard about the autoimmune system being a concern. What do you say?" Yeah, probably. Ataxia is a neurological condition. Is the gut involved with that? Probably. Is autoimmune involved? Possibly. You certainly see autoimmune in Parkinson's and MS and ataxia. Probably fungal. Deb, probably the thing that I would see very, very common in ataxia was fungal. Maybe parasitical too.
Sharon, "when you start taking progesterone, do you have to take estrogen as well to protect your heart?" I don't understand that connection. Sharon, what's the connection? Progesterone in the heart. Progesterone for a woman is very good. If you followed me for any length of time at all, I'm not big on estrogen. Women and men today, we live in a world that's estrogen dominated. There's way too much estrogen and way too much xenoestrogens. I'm not big. That's me personally, and I think I'm right about this. I would never give a woman estrogen. It's too dangerous in my opinion. Estrogen is a growth hormone. Progesterone is not. Now bioidentical progesterone and I try and get women to up their progesterone levels.
That's why we created the menopausal formula, which actually blocks extra estrogen. Doesn't block all estrogen blocks extra estrogen, especially in the form of xenoestrogens and it dims out that estrogen. That's why I love flax seeds. And then we build up the progesterone. I'm big on progesterone. Women need progesterone. We don't have enough progesterone in our world today. Women are guinea pigs for estrogen dominance, and so are men by the way. Men, no more testosterone in the world. It's all estrogen. It's terrible. Men at 50 years old got more estrogen than their wives. No wonder you see so much prostate problems and cancer problems in men. Thanks Sharon.
Okay, Natalie, "what are my thoughts on levothyroxine being linked to a higher risk of bone loss in seniors?" That's true. Google it. Okay. And if you've been on it for a long time, you need to protect yourself. Okay? And one of the ways of doing it, you're taking any medication, you should be on probiotics. They help to negate some of the side effects of it and vitamin D, most women are low in vitamin D and they don't realize that vitamin D with K2 is the best thing they can do for osteoporosis. Plus, plus plus. Get strong. Make muscles. Strong muscles make strong bones. Strong muscles make strong brain. Strong muscles make better pancreas. Yeah, strong muscles make a better liver because your body don't have to use the liver to store fat. Your muscles take it. Okay, thank you Natalie.
Marjorie. Another thyroid question for a hypothyroid for long-term COVID with symptoms. "Are Navitol, Cortisol Control the best supplements to reduce fatigue, brain fog and carb cravings?" Yep, I like that. I like that. Navitol very good. Cortisol control, yes. Excellent, excellent. Yeah, especially for the brain fog, carb cravings, cortisol control, ashwagandha in it. Very, very, very good for craving sugars, crappy carbs and reducing fatigue. Navitol's fantastic for fatigue. So combine the two together. Marjorie, you're on the right track, my dear.
Debbie, "I have chronic solar uticaria." Now uticaria is hives. Okay, solar, sun, sun causes hives for Debbie. No fun, Debbie. Okay, "what can help with this as I cannot go outside?" Well, you can't go outside covered up, Debbie? You got to cover up anytime you got uticaria. Okay? You got to look at your gut, leaky gut, fix that. Okay? Now make sure you don't have lupus or whatever, an autoimmune condition because that can give you solar uticaria. Now probably your doctor knows that, so they will rule that out. But you can't go outside because you get uticaria if the sun is out, even if you're covered up? Debbie, let me know that. Okay? Because you want to get outside and get the benefits of being outside, even if you can't get your vitamin D from the sun because you're covered up. But at least you get your melatonin levels go up. All your endorphines are going up because you're feeling better out in the sunlight. But Deb, you got to tell me what's going on there. But fix the leaky gut too. Get on the reset. Really makes a difference.
Judy takes 4 DHA and Navitol a day. Probiotics, bone broth. You're a smart girl. She has astigmatism and you got trouble with your eyes and cataracts. Anything else I can do? Well, you're doing what I would have you do. I love that combination of navitol and DHA, because for your eyes there's nothing better, nothing better in my opinion. Judy, hold on. What are you asking me here? What else can I do? Four navitol, probiotics. Lay off the sugar. Get off the sugar, Judy. But I like what you're doing. I really do. You're taking the right things. It's circulation, circulation, circulation with the eyes, microcirculation. You're doing what I would have you do
Madelaine. "I've been taking cortisol control since June the 14th for a couple of weeks." Okay. "I take one tablet before bed," okay, "it helps with my sleep, but I sweat excessively during the night. Is this normal?" Well, it's not normal, Madelaine. Are you talking about you're sleeping better but you're sweating more? Okay. Is that what you're saying? Or did you always sweat and that hasn't fixed that yet? Madelaine, you got horrorMadelainemones. Now cortisol control. It is not normal. I mean, you know what nice about cortisol control? If you go to Martin Clinic website, you can read all the reviews there. I mean there's thousands of reviews on cortisol and look, everybody's different. Everybody's got a different fingerprint. We're all different. So sometimes people, oh, I get sweaty when I take cortisol.
Can I tell you, Madelaine, it's the first time I've ever heard that. It might not be the only one, but it's the first time I've heard that as being even a possible side effect of taking cortisol. But everybody's different. So if that's what you're finding, yeah, now you got to weigh the benefits versus the symptoms you're getting, the side effect, which I'd never heard of before. But again, I don't negate it. Okay? I started taking it during the day, but it makes you drowsy and tired. Well again, Madelaine don't take during the day if that's what happens to you. But most people, that doesn't happen at all. It calms you down, but it shouldn't make you drowsy and tired. But again, Madelaine, you just started, so maybe see, you're going to have to sort of play with it to figure yourself out.
I used to tell patients this in my office, aspirin has been around for about a hundred years and 99% of people with aspirin, I mean other than internal bleeding, which is serious if they take an aspirin for a headache of it, they didn't get any side effects from it. I said, but one out of a hundred will, and that might be you. So everybody's unique. That's what I try to get people to understand. You're unique and you're fearfully and wonderfully made and no one else is like you. No one. And so you got to sort of figure yourself out. And even with taking a supplement, but it's certainly not normal to sweat taking cortisol.
Krista, here's Graves disease again. "Should I not eat too many eggs because of iodine?" Nah. Look, eggs is a good source of iodine. So is meat. It's a trace of it though. So you get a trace of iodine. You'd have to eat a hundred eggs, Kristen for that to affect your Graves. A hundred. You plan on eating a hundred? No, of course not. I wouldn't worry about that. Okay. "Can you take the prescription meds with the thyroid formula?" Yes. "My husband's doctor ruled out Graves. He has to go see a specialist. He is always hungry, eats so much food, but doesn't stay with him. He has frequent bowel movements." Yeah, can't sleep. He might have Graves. He's sure getting a lot of the symptoms of it. He's lost seven or eight pounds. Yeah, his thyroid could be in trouble for sure. Krista got to be checked out.
Lynn, "is beef tallow good for us?" Very good. Okay, beef tallow very good for us. And you know what I like, in the US? A lot of people don't like Robert Kennedy Jr., I do. Okay. I might not like his politics. I don't know about that, but I like what he's doing at the FDA and all that. And what restaurants said they're going to start cooking their fries and I think their nuggets or whatever in beef tallow. Wonderful. McDonald's used to do it until the stupids got after them to change their oils. Because beef tallow that gives you cholesterol. How can you cook anything with cholesterol in it? It's the best thing you can do. Beef tallow is fantastic.
Okay, Elaine, "is it true that you're not to take oil of oregano daily?" Uh oh, uh oh. What? Well, I take oil of oregano every day. Am I in trouble? Are you telling me something Elaine that I don't know? No. You know why? I'll tell you why. Because oil of oregano is a natural antiseptic. It's a natural antibiotic. It's a natural antiviral. It's a natural antifungal. It's a natural antioxidant and it don't kill your good guys. It don't kill your good guys. So people equate oil of oregano with an antibiotic. Well, it's an antibiotic, but it's a natural one. It knows the difference between your good and bad bacteria. Oil of oregano promotes your good bacteria, doesn't kill it. It doesn't cause dysbiosis. It's good for you. And I've been preaching that for 40 years and I've been consistent.
And oil of oregano, you know where, I'll just tell you something, Elaine, that this I found out, I'm talking 20 years ago that the number one sales in all of Canada for oil of oregano was Sudbury, Ontario. Do you know that? Yeah. You know why? Because I had a radio show and I talked about oil of oregano all the time. They used to joke on my radio show. It was a phone in. What's Dr. Martin going to tell them to do? Take oil of oregano. You like copper cups? I like oil of oregano better. I'm not saying copper cups are no good. I'm just saying oil or oregano's better. Elaine, thanks for the question. It gets me to pontificate. I like that.
Gerti, how are you? "I would like to ask for a female friend diagnosed with alopecia, hair loss, ovarian polyps." Way too much estrogen and she's got leaky gut big time. Okay, leaky gut and estrogen coming out her ears. Gerti. "Other than the EMC diet, she buys Martin clinic supplements." Tell her she's smart. "Is it better to take one dim, one saw Palmetto, vital X to increase her progesterone." Get her on the menopausal formula, or black kosh. We already have it in a menopausal formula that increases estrogen to some extent right now it balances estrogen and progesterone. I'd have her on the menopausal formula. Gerti. Okay. I like what she's doing, but she's got way too much estrogen. You want to dim that out big time. I've really helped a lot of patients over the years with alopecia and autoimmune. They were so messed up. They had a hormonal cascade. Horrormones, cortisol elevate their progesterone, lower their insulin, thyroid. I aimed at all of them to help that leaky gut. Big time. Get rid of the fungus and don't feed the bears.
Debbie, "see the lots of hype about health benefits of hydrogen water bottles for chronic inflammation. I'm tempted to buy one. Are they worth investing in?" Look, Debbie, it's a good question. If you have money to spend, I'm not against it. Okay? I've read everything I can on hydrogen water. Do I buy it? I'm skeptical. Okay. I'm skeptical. Drink water, hydrogen water. I listen to the hype. I'm not convinced. It doesn't mean that you can't try it. It doesn't mean if you have the money, you want to put it into hydrogen water. I got no problem with that. You want to do it like me? For me, I'm not drinking hydrogen water. I don't buy it. I've read it, I've studied it. I've looked at the science. I'm skeptical, but I got no problem if you want to try it. Okay. I've seen some of the testimonies. Good for them. I just don't buy the science that it's the greatest thing. Cures everything from colds to cancer. I don't buy that. Okay, Debbie, that was good.
Janine. "An hour after I drink coffee, my blood pressure goes up. Should I drink decaf?" I love the question. Yeah, maybe. Okay. Maybe you need to drink decaf. You get a lot of benefits from decaf. Okay? I love decaf at night. I got to have that. It's not because my blood pressure goes up. I can't sleep if I have a regular coffee. Even in the afternoon now. It used to be at night and now it's in the afternoon. If I have a coffee in the afternoon, it's got to be decaf. I love coffee. The real vitamin C. So yeah, you might have to switch that up, Janine.
Okay, Heather and Jaron. "I eat healthy." Good for you. "Exercise often." Good for you. "I cannot lose weight for the life of me." Join the cast of millions. Heather, "I am 41 years old female. I have just finished the 30 day reset." Smart girl. "I've always been active but bigger. Since hitting 40, I've gained 30 pounds and cannot do anything to get rid of it. Doctors say my blood work is good and they want to shove ozempic on me." Don't do that. "Do you have any suggestions?" Yeah, I got a lot of suggestions, Heather. But the overarching principle I want you to get to understand. Look for all the metabolic syndrome first. Fix if you got any issues with that, okay? So if your blood work is good, your A1C is good, your triglycerides are good, your HDL is good. Your uric acid is good, your vitamin D is good. Your B12 is good. If that's what you meant by blood work being all good, a lot of times doctors don't look at that blood work. They only look at certain things. But those are the things.
So make sure you don't have metabolic syndrome. Now, one thing I can almost guarantee you, Heather, is that you got horrormones. Thyroid might be a little sluggish maybe because you don't have enough progesterone. So there's a lot of little things that I would tinker with. But if you are feeling good and your health is good and you don't have metabolic syndrome, you're on the right road. And you probably need some more balance in those hormones and we can help with that. And I'm not in practice anymore, otherwise I would tell you, look, come and see me. It's worth the trip wherever you are from. But in terms of guidance, Heather, yeah, maybe send me an email to info@martinclinic with, give those numbers I just asked about because sometimes we can tweak that. What is your vitamin D levels has an effect on weight loss. It really does. But if you're healthy, that's the first thing I'm interested in.
Okay, guys, we got through all the questions this morning. Isn't that wonderful? We had fun. I don't know about you. I had fun. Okay guys, we love you guys dearly, sincerely and every other way. You guys are the greatest audience in the world. Thank you for being so faithful to this program. And we love you dearly. Talk to you soon.
