Dr. Martin: Well, good morning everyone. Once again, welcome to another live this morning. Hope you're having a wonderful start to your day. We appreciate you guys coming on and thank you for doing that on a daily basis. So many of you are so faithful to this program and the morning. We love you dearly. Okay, you know what I want to talk about this morning? I sort of just been thinking about stuff and one of the things that I've been thinking about are three medications that probably have the most side effect. Okay? Now I want you guys to give me your opinion. Three medications, okay? That have the most side effects and the most serious side effects. Okay? So close your books. So three meds that have the most side effects, and we're going to talk about at least one of them this morning. Okay? You guys, the scroll keeps going.
Let's see your answers. If I can get you to put them in the scroll. Janice. Statins. Okay, very good. Annette. Antibiotics. Very good. Jude saying statins. Okay, give me a couple of more answers, guys. Carol, statins, I guess because you guys hear me talking about 'em. Marines saying statins. Rahe is saying statins. Carol Cpro. I like that. It's a good answer, Tina. You got it, Maria. Statins, antibiotics, Sue, designer drugs. I guess so. Sleeping pills. You better believe it. Prestor and baby aspirin. Guys, you guys are so smart. Gerie saying Painkillers. Bta. Steroids. Yeah, statins. Doug saying antibiotics. Gerie, you had three of them there. Statin, metformin, and antibiotics. Who was that? Bonnie? Gary PPIs. I love you guys. Karen Antidepressants. Wendy Saint PPIs, Georgi Saint Statins and Antibiotics. Marilyn. Statins every pill. Denise, I like that Sherry saying oep Sepic. You guys are, you're too smart.
I can't stand it, Cheryl. Now literally, Tylenol, Advil, ibuprofen. Those are all good ads. Okay, Jan is saying over-the-counter drugs. Karen saying, Tylenol. You know guys, I'm not arguing with any of you, David, you got it. And Nativity and who else was up there? Karen? St. Ozempic. Yeah, Sandy Tylenol and ibuprofen. Leila. Diet pills. Sharon, any long-term pill? Okay, you all got the right answer. Okay, but I'm going to talk to you this morning about a couple of things that I have found over the years and absolutely statins are horrendous. The more they study statin drugs, cholesterol lowering medication. The whole premise in my opinion is wrong. The whole premise on lowering cholesterol is wrong. You guys know that? I've been talking about it for years, and am I ever going to stop talking about it? Well, probably not. Probably not, but let me talk to you this morning about PPI been around a long time, okay?
Stomach acid lowering medication, very, very long term. If you ask me to give you the top three, in my opinion of the medications that are one over-prescribed and create serious long-term effects, I would give you three. All of you were right, by the way. All of you were right as ozempic because a lot of you said the GLP one medication, the ones now the designer drug to lose weight. You better believe it. The more they get a little bit of history on it, the more the side effects are coming out and I think it will be a catastrophe down the road. I really do. I think it will be catastrophic when it comes to side effects of that medication. So you're all right. And you know what? I tell you how smart you are? Do you think I'm just pumping up your tires? No, because I told somebody yesterday, my audience is the smartest audience because they like research and they like to do a lot of research themselves, and that makes our audience the number one health audience in North America.
I'm convinced of it, and you guys prove it to me every day, every day, every day, okay? By the feedback, the questions, what you know when I test you? Okay, so let me tell you about one medication that I've been harping on for a long time, by the way. My three, okay, my three, I put 'em at the top, but everything else is very close. One, PPIs, statins, and antibiotics. Okay? I've always put a little disclaimer on an antibiotic, okay? I always put a little disclaimer on it because I don't dislike it. If you need an antibiotic, it will save your life. So am I against antibiotics? Absolutely not. But antibiotics have done more damage than probably any other medication. It's a double-edged sword. Yep, it kills infection, but okay, and you guys know this, we talk about it. Fungus causes leaky gut probably. I've said one of the root causes of autism and a lot of things, antibiotics is okay, we'll talk about that, but let me start with PPIs.
PPIs like Prilosec, Nexium preface, I looked up 200 million prescriptions in the USA alone are given every year of that medication, 200 million prescriptions. Holy smokes, okay? And people have a lot of trouble with their stomach acid. They get acid reflux and the doctor's go-to is to put you on A-P-P-I-A proton pump inhibitor in your stomach, you have proton pumps, they release acid. Where do you want to be acidic in your body, okay? You don't want your blood to be acidic. That'll kill you. Your body knows how to buffer so that you're not acidic. Your pH of your blood must be alkaline. If it becomes acidic, you are getting ketoacidosis and you are going to die. Okay? So I'm not talking about that acidity. I'm talking about the acidity in your stomach, and the problem is not too much, it's too little, okay? Now the theory, well, you have too much acid, you're getting acid reflux, and it ain't no fun getting acid reflux.
I saw it every day, every day, every day in my office suffering from acid reflux. And how many thousands over the years did I see in my office that people were put on PPIs? Okay, you can get 'em over the counter now. A PPI, but Prilosec, okay? Nexium, the purple pill. I think that's how they marketed it. Oh, you need the purple pill. You're eating pizza and you want to continue eating pizza and enjoy it. Don't worry about acid reflux. We're going to give you the purple pill, but the purple pill should have a black box warning on it. What is that? A black box warning. It's where the FDA and Health Canada put a severe warning on a medication, a severe warning. Do you know that PPIs were intended to be given for a couple of weeks? Very short term, not long term, but it's amazing when the drug companies bring out a medication and they get it approved.
Okay? I watched this happen, guys. You're looking at Noah here. I've been around a long time as it was in the days of Noah, okay? I've been around a long time, guys. I watched this happen. Okay? Here's what I've said. I watched it happen in the seventies when SSRI came out, okay? Serotonin, okay, inhibitors, uptakers, remember? Well, there was a black box warning on them meant for temporary use only under an acute attack of severe anxiety, depression use temporarily. Oh, it didn't take long. Once the approval came, even with the warning, it didn't take long. They forgot the warning. And physicians were handing this stuff out on prescriptions like candy. And here we are today, 50 years down the road, and there's no end in sight for those medications. There's no end in sight anyway. PPIs were meant to be temporary. Your acid reflux is so bad.
You're taking a PPI according to your doctor. You got to take Prilosec. You got to take Nexium, or you got to take Prevacid or one of those. Okay? Here's the problem. And this research had been around for a while, but guys, long-term use never meant for that. It doesn't fix the problem. It mask the problem. It's a bandaid. It doesn't fix your problem. Well, I'm getting less acid reflux. I know, but it's not fixing the problem because the problem in your stomach is that you're not producing enough acidity, so you're pro proton pumps increase your acidity in your stomach.
You got proton pumps. Yeah, but doc, it's going up. I know, but the root of the problem is you're not acidic enough when your body's senses, okay? Your body's so smart. Remember what I said? Your pH of your stomach, you should be more acidic in your stomach than a lion's stomach, but you know what happens, okay? Here's what happens. When you eat the wrong food, your pH and your stomach changes. It's the biggest cause of acid reflux is eating the wrong food, not pizza. Well, yes, pizza in a way. Okay? Here's what it is, guys. You're supposed to be eating like a lion, but you're eating like a cow.
What? You're supposed to be eating like a lion, not a cow. Let me explain that. A cow eats grass so you don't have to. I say that all the time. A cow has four stomachs. That's how many stomachs you need to live on. Salad. A, you only need one good stomach with a lot of acidity in it if you eat like a lion. Now, I have not followed lions around, but other people have, and they know what they eat. They eat meat. They're not chomping at the leaves on trees or they're not chomping on the grass. They lie in the grass, but they like meat, okay? They like meat. And guys, I can prove to you, and this is one of the biggest proofs, and you guys know this because I've been talking about this for years, one of the biggest proofs that you're supposed to eat meat is the acidity in your stomach.
You should have more acidity in your stomach than the lions, okay? Between 1.3 and three on the pH scale, that's very acidic. Your stomach just so acidic, you put a penny down, it will melt it. It's so acidic, but people you see, they have a higher pH, more alkaline than it should be. Why number one? Cause eating way too much non-meat, okay? When you live on bread and you live on noodles, and you live on pasta, and when you live on salads and when you live on vegetables and fruit, okay, you can have some, I'm not saying you can't, but you can't live on it. Why? Because your stomach was designed like alliance, but even more acidic than alliance, people have a hard time understanding that because all of their lives, they've been told a lie that fruits and vegetables and grains, they're the best thing for you and eat meat and eggs and dairy in moderation.
No, it's the other way around because your stomach is designed with the huge amount of acidity in it, food comes in, it gets mulched big time. That acidity, very, very important to break down your protein. See, you're meant to eat a lot of protein. You can have some protein in the vegetable kingdom. I agree with that, but it's not the best protein. You want protein from meat from, you want it from mostly from the animal kingdom. Why? Because it's much more bioavailable. Your body knows what to do with it, plus you get complete amino acids, the building blocks that you need from your food, amino acids.
When you don't have enough acidity, your body reacts to that. It's trying to make more. And when your proton pumps try and make more and you don't change your diet, you're going to make more and more and more acidity, and it's going to come up the esophagus. And we call that heartburn acid reflux. Is it any fun? Nope. I mentioned this the other day. It's no fun, guys, when you don't have your help, true or false? Yeah, it's no fun. You know when you don't feel good, it's no fun when you got acid coming up your esophagus, enough of it for some people used to tell me, doc, I got it coming out my ears. It ain't no fun. I agree with you, man. It's no fun when you don't feel good, right? That acid, okay, but just understand the fundamental problem. The fundamental problem. I used to tell my patients, you're eating the wrong food. What? Well, I said, you're not a cow. I'm not. No, you're not. You don't got four stomachs. You only got one when you're eating salad. You need four stomachs, so quit living on it. Oh, dog. You know, women especially, I love my salad. Yeah, I know you do.
Salad. I got to have my salad. I don't know where women got into salad. It started. Hey guys, that started, by the way, in my lifetime, again, remember Noah, okay? In my lifetime, I watched it happen mostly in around the eighties. It became sort of, you know how I talk about designer drugs? Well, it became a designer food because vegetarians out there and vegans who get Hollywood and whatever sell it. It's so good for you. It's got fiber. Fiber became sort of the number one on the hit parade. Food still is to a lot of people. Fiber. And now here's how they couch it. Even now. Dr. Martin talks about the microbiome all the time. The bacteria, the friendly bacteria, you need to feed it with fiber. And I get a migraine because that ain't true. That ain't true. You heard it here at the Martin Clinic. On the doctor is in. What did you hear? Fiber's overrated. There's nothing that will feed your friendly bacteria better than a steak. Do you hear me?
I know I'm not popular when it comes to that. I know that when I talk about the stomach's, pH people dismiss it even though they know it's true. I didn't make up your stomach. God made your stomach and he gave you acid in it. And to be real acidic, take some acidity out of your stomach. It'll burn a hole in your kitchen table, or at least it should because you need that acidity. Break down protein, break down your B vitamins. Why do you think we have such a huge issue today? Why do you think we have such a huge issue today with a low B12? Well, most people don't even have the intrinsic factor. You need acidity in your stomach to be very, very, very acidic.
You need that. Otherwise, you're not developing the intrinsic factor. You're not going to be absorbing B12. And you know me, I talk about B12 all the time as an essential vitamin that the world's population is extremely low in, and it's worse today than it ever was. It's worse today than ever because people are eating the wrong foods. That's the number one reason plus one of your biggest parts of your immune system. Come here, come closer. I want you to hear this. One of the biggest parts of your immune system is your stomach. It's its acidity in the stomach. Why do we see so much h pylori today? Why do we see these bacterial infections that are so bad, like seed difficile Now? Yes, the overuse of antibiotics for sure, but one of the reasons internally is the lack of acidity in the stomach. It's one of your body's major defense systems, not allowing bacteria or yeast. Candida, parasites.
We talked about parasites and ivermectin. What's better than ivermectin is your stomach acidity. When you have a robust acidity in your stomach, bacteria, they hardly have a chance. But today we're carbo holics. Put your hand up. You don't have to, but most people do. My name is Tony and I'm a carbo holic. What's the problem with that? Besides insulin and insulin resistance and fatty liver and obesity and Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. All of that. It's what it does to your stomach. You were never meant, and your stomach especially was never meant to have the amount of sugar that people eat today. Sugar is so destructive to your stomach because it changes. Its pH. One of the things, and it's amazing when you clean up the diet, one of the benefits of the reset is changing the pH in your stomach, making it more acidic.
You want that. You want to be able to turn those proton pumps down, not off down. So I can't almost handle sometimes the way the FDA in Health Canada operate. They allow these medications. They don't educate at all. You go to the pharmacist, and I get mad at pharmacists because they know better. If anyone knows the side effects of medication, it's a pharmacist, but they've been silenced today by the pharmaceutical industry, they should be on the phone. Hey, okay, let me give an example. Hey, Joe, this is your second prescription for Prilosec, for preface for Nexium, and the geniuses allow you to get Nexium, I think in Canada over the counter. Anyway, here's the pharmacist. Hey, Joe, how are you?
You come to renew your prescription? Well, hold on a minute. Hold on a minute. You shouldn't be doing that. Now, let me get your doctor on the phone. Hey guys. Pharmacists are professionals. They're educated in medication. Hey, doc, I got Joe here in the pharmacy and you've given them a renewed prescription for A-P-P-I-A proton pump inhibitor doc. You're not supposed to do that because you're only masking the problem, and there's enormous side effects to this medication. So doc, I am going to suggest to Joe, let's put a stop to this. Okay, let's put a stop to this. Do you think this happens? It doesn't happen. It should, but it doesn't. Okay? It doesn't. That's why I get mad at pharmacists because they've been hijacked, just like medicine has been hijacked by the pharmaceutical industries. So have the pharmacists. The pharmacists are educated in medication and their uses and their side effects. They should be screaming blue murder.
Hey, doc, nah, don't do that. This stuff is deadly. Let me give you a couple of examples of it, okay? And then we'll close on this. 200 million prescriptions a year, three to five years. If you take this medication three to five years, your increase of heart attacks and strokes go up by 40%. Alzheimer's, four years of taking A-P-P-I-A proton pump inhibitor up 40%. Why B vitamins? Why amino acids? Your brain needs. Your brain needs these vitamins. Your brain, your heart needs these vitamins and minerals. You get low in magnesium, you get low in potassium, chromium, iodine, thyroid. Oh, the list goes on and on and on. When you don't have enough stomach acidity, and these things only master a problem. And when they look at the long-term side effects, boy, they're not good. Well, doc, at least I didn't have acid reflux. Yeah, but you got Alzheimer's.
Oh, I don't have acid reflux, but I had a heart attack. But that's all right, guys. Okay, we're going to do the other ones. My top three, okay. Okay, guys. Friday is what q and a often ends up q and a, Monday and q and a Friday. But we start Fridays with q and a. Send your questions in info@martinclinic.com. If you have questions about medications you're taking, don't be shy. I'll give you my opinion. Now, I don't want you to have acid reflux either. I don't. I don't want you to suffer. I want to help. Okay? I mean, but I got to give you the background. I got to tell you where it's coming from. Why are these medications so prevalent today? Okay. We love you guys. And we love you dearly. Talk to you soon.
