Dr. Martin answers questions sent in by our listeners in today's episode.
TRANSCRIPT OF TODAY'S EPISODE
Announcer: You're listening to The Doctor Is In Podcast, brought to you by MartinClinic.com. During the episode, the doctors share a lot of information. As awesome as the info may be, it is not intended to diagnose, cure, treat, or prevent any disease. It's strictly for informational purposes.
Dr. Martin: Well, good morning everyone. Once again, welcome to another live this morning. Nice to have you on with us. If you can join us live, of course, it's always fun and we know a lot of people can't. Then they watch The Doctor Is In podcast at a later time, but okay, let's get to some questions guys. Laurie's asking a question about menopause. Don't you just love horror-mones, Laurie? Okay, here's the question. "During menopause, when your estrogen level is decreasing and your bones, joints are achy, is vitamin D3 and K2 very good for you? Lifting weights, very good for you? High DHA enough? I do all this, but I'm still achy." Well, it could be a couple of things, Laurie. It could be your menopause. Okay? Because a big thing, hormones have a lot to do with bones. I would tell you to add one more thing.
I would tell you to get on our menopausal formula. Why is that? Well, okay, I know that you just said estrogen's going down, but you know me, okay? And if you don't, Laurie, here's how you know me. I'm a balancer of hormones and I can tell you my experience is it's never a problem with estrogen going down. The problem is progesterone and estrogen being balanced when that's out of balance. And remember, we live in a world that is full of mimics of estrogen. We live in a world like from plastic to pesticides, herbicides, anything almost you can think of that's a chemical, your body thinks it's estrogen. Because they're xenoestrogens, they mimic estrogen. And what the problem is, is you have to balance that out with progesterone and progesterone. Our menopausal formula is made exactly for that. It dims out the extra xenoestrogens and it elevates your natural progesterone.
So that's what I would tell you to do. I like everything else that you're doing. You're right on the right track, Lori. Okay? And of course, remember bones, eat lots of protein, protein and fat in eggs, meat in cheese. Okay, Jacque, what are the optimal numbers in blood work for Omega-3? Well, look, yeah, and there are labs that do omega levels and they usually go by percentage. Usually you want between optimally around eight to 12% omega levels in your body. And at the end of the day, I can tell you something, I was in a health food store the other day. I like to go in there just to compare. I couldn't find any product with a high DHA and they called it high DHA. Oh, this is a perfect Omega-3. The max I saw was about 800 milligrams of DHA in a capsule. We triple that. DHA is so good for you. So ZPA too EPA is good. It's just DHA is better. And remember that comes out of the animal kingdom, okay? Where you get your DHA and EPA is the animal kingdom. Okay? Thanks Jacque for that question. And Melissa's asking a good question. I don't eat eggs. Well, I feel sorry for you. Okay, Melissa? No, I understand a lot of people, whatever reason when I say eggs, meat, and cheese. Some people say, doc, I can't have dairy.
And usually though with dairy, it's milk. Okay? It's usually milk. But some people, you know what? I don't do well with cheese. Well, okay, don't worry about it. It's not the end of the world. I don't do well with eggs. I know a lot of people that don't do well with eggs. I feel sorry for them. Eggs are so good for you, but if you can't digest them, you can't digest them. And I've had people try different, take our enzymes and not and to see. But if you can't, you can't. And don't worry about it because if you're eating enough Melissa meat and you're eating enough dairy like butter and cheese and even like a Greek plain yogurt, good for you. You're going to get everything you need. Okay? So yeah, eggs are wonderful because they're full of choline. They're full, but so is meat.
So yeah, a lot of people can't eat eggs. Hey, don't worry about it. You're going to get your vital nutrients that I guarantee just load up on dairy and I don't mean milk. You guys know that Cream, yes. Load up on dairy and load up on meat. Okay, Lois, can you explain blood tests resulting in low neutrophils and high lymphocytes and monocyte? Well, usually lowest. Look, it could be several things. I'd need much more background. Okay, guys, with blood tests. You know me, I love blood tests and I really like looking at certain biomarkers in blood tests. Your lipids, your triglycerides, your HDL. You want to show me your total cholesterol or your LDL? Show it to me. I don't care. I don't. I want it to be high. How's that? No. Anyway, when it comes to monocytes and neutrophils, neutrophils are white blood cells, okay?
I used to look at blood all the time, okay? When you look at tens of thousands of slides of blood, which I did for years, you get really good at it. And I like live blood because you could watch neutrophils, okay? I like them in action when they were chasing a bacteria. Okay? You can Google that if you want. I used to watch that all the time because I said, well, your immune system's working, and by the way, your neutrophils won't work properly if you don't have good levels of vitamin D. Okay? So Lois, if you have low neutrophils and high lymphocytes, you might have an infection, you might have an infection, you might have autoimmune, you might be on certain medications that affect that. And like I said, those things got to be ruled out and usually if they get flagged in your blood work, your physician will be interested in more information, so more testing or whatever, right?
Another thing that can affect that is low B12. People don't realize the importance of B12. I know I talk about vitamin D all the time, and if I could get into senior homes, what two vitamins would I bring with me? Vitamin D and B12. Every senior in those homes, every senior in those homes, I guarantee it are low in B12 and low in vitamin D, you can bet your boots that that's true. I did enough testing in my clinic to give me tremendous clinical experience and blood testing looking at the results of blood tests, thousands, tens of thousands, and I'll tell you something, seniors almost guaranteed low B12 and low levels of vitamin D almost guaranteed too bad. I heard a doctor the other day that, oh, you take vitamin D or whatever, or B12, your urine is going to be expensive. How silly is that? How silly is that?
When they went through covid, remember that? What was it, 80% of the people that went into the hospital with that virus? You know what? They were low in vitamin D if only, if only people knew. Well, we knew we said it, you knew, but all the powers to be, if they only had given out vitamin D, if they only would've told us to go outside, oh no. I was there when they closed the beaches in Florida. I was there, I was screaming blue murder. I remember the cops coming on, get off the beach. Are you kidding me? I have a picture of them people leaving the beaches and I was like, John the Baptist, go back, go in the sun. The safest place and you can cram each other on the beach too. Who cares if you got vitamin D? Oh, I got a migraine, a super migraine. Okay, why did I even go on that rant? Oh, that was Lois, because we're talking about neutrophils and things like that. Lois, thanks for the question.
Lois, if you have more information, you want to send it off to info@martinclinic.com, okay? info@martinclinic.com. Send an email, give me more info. I can give you a better answer. Okay, Nicole, what vitamin deficiency would cause? Nightmares an adult? Well, not necessarily a deficiency. It could be, I mean, it's possible, okay, to get nightmares. Usually though, I find when your cortisol is high, that's usually when people get more nightmares. I would say more that I've seen it though with B12. Again, you go brain, think of brain, think of P 12. You think of brain, think of vitamin D, you think of brain and the chemistry and everything going on in there. Think of high D, h, A, your brain's made up of it and there's always the gut brain connection. I've always talked about that. Leaky gut, leaky brain. And the other one too is perhaps melatonin. Can I say that I ever recommended melatonin? Probably not. I wasn't big on supplementing with melatonin. I was big on get your eyeballs in the sun, okay?
Don't look directly at the sun, but if it's sunny out, take your sunglasses off, let melatonin come in and then dark, dark, dark, dark, dark room at night, melatonin comes in. Look, other people might have suggestions. Iron. I don't know. I haven't scrolled here, but you guys are smart. Tell the call if there's anything else that you can think of. Joanne, I was wondering what you think of people over 60 taking creatine for their brains. I like creatine. Okay, look at me now, Joanne. Okay, look, one of the reasons you don't hear me talking about creatine, unless you're reading my book, sun, steak and Steel, remember the five Cs that are in vitamin S steak. One of them is creatine and there's been a lot of research on creatine and your brain and your muscles. Cognitive creatine, but you can eat it. I had creatine yesterday. Why? Because I had a steak yesterday.
Whenever I get a chance, steak, creatine carnitine, carine, coQ10. No, I'm serious guys, okay? Because steak is so complete in amino acids and creatine, I love, I love creatine. I do. You want to take it in a powder and a supplement? I don't care. Go for it. I'd rather eat a steak. You're going to get your B12 and a steak two. Sometimes you have to supplement not maybe so much with creatine, but with B12 because there's a lot of factors with B12 and it's a finicky vitamin. Okay? Kevin said he had a prime rib. Kev, I love you. Listen guys, I grew up, this was my dad in 1968, diagnosed as a diabetic, and I'm not kidding you here. My dad, he lived on stake, okay? I mean, there's nobody in the universe. I used to say this about my father. Nobody golfed more than my father.
Maybe tiger woods. That's it. Okay? Nobody golfed more than my dad did, and nobody ate more steak than my father did when he found out he was a diabetic steak, I was 16 when my dad became a diabetic. I said, dad, what the heck are you eating steak all the time? Not that I didn't like steak, I'd love steak as a kid, but my dad had steak. We had something else, and my mother would make my father a steak when he got home from his office. I said, dad, don't you get tired of it? He said, ah, I'm a diabetic. I got to eat steak. Nobody ate steak more than my dad. And then Kevin, you know what he had on Sundays, prime rib. We always had roast beef every Sunday. That was just our tradition at home as a family, okay? And we were lots prime rib.
I remember my mom would make a roast. Oh my word, you would die for that rose beef. Okay? Prime rib, okay. I like to tell you stories, guys, because that's where I come from. I come from a long line of watching blood sugar, a long line of understanding way back when that diabetes is a sugar problem. You and carbs and sugars don't get along. That's what it means. And some people don't get along with carbs more than others, but don't fool yourself. Okay? Thank you for the question. Okay, that was Joanne. Thanks, Joanne. Victoria, my husband and I finished the reset. We stay hydrated, take electrolytes, but my husband still gets migraines a lot. What else can he do to stop them? Well, a couple of things. Victoria and I know electrolytes, you got magnesium in electrolytes. Usually if you take an electrolyte, you've got magnesium.
It's part of it. But usually to put a small amount, I always found with migraines, like if it was a woman horror, mos, too much estrogen, but sometimes in migraines, a couple of things, okay? Magnesium, okay, migraine, relax. And again, Victoria, I don't have all the information that I would ask you about. If I could ask and you could respond to me. Maybe he is taking magnesium already, but I would put him on magnesium if he's not migraines. Men might look at chiropractic because sometimes, like I said, women usually was hormonal. Almost invariably I could fix migraines in women once I balanced out their hormones.
Men are usually a lot less complicated, but something's missing could be B12. I've seen that too. I don't know what his numbers are. Check that out. Okay, vitamin D. Vitamin D for everything, right? So anti-inflammatory. Okay, check that out. Thank you for the question. That was Victoria. I'm just reading and I'm trying to figure out what she's asking. How often can a blood test be wrong on a thyroid test? Barb, I get the question, Barb. Every time. Well, it depends. Okay, look, the thyroid test doctors usually rely on TSH unless they do a full panel. Even then they don't understand the thyroid. The thyroid, Barb has so many strings attached to it, okay, I had a little secret. If you read my book, sun Steak and Steel, I got a whole chapter on testing and even the thyroid, okay? I put my little secret in that book on what to look for in the TSH test.
It's just years of experience looking at, like I said earlier, tens of thousands of blood tests and saying, yeah, you know what? Usually when the thyroid is sluggish or whatever, it's hard to pick out. And that's why the other thing, that's why for me, I was always big on history. Give me your symptoms. I made you fill out a questionnaire, Barb, you didn't get to see me until you spent a half an hour just about in my waiting room, filling out a questionnaire and I meant it. And some people come in, they were irritated at me. I asked you to come in a half an hour early. Why fill out the questionnaire? And I had a thyroid questionnaire. Why did I do that? Well, because sometimes blood tests can be unreliable. Not that I didn't like blood tests, I did, but I like symptoms. I like the two together.
Okay? Blood tests and symptoms, and I used to tell my staff symptoms, Trump blood tests symptoms. Trump blood tests. Why? Because I learned from the best my father. If it walks like a duck and talks like a duck, it's a duck. Thyroid. Well, you got all the symptoms. Hair is falling out, feel terrible. Eyebrows thinning skin dry doc, I don't feel good. I look at food, I gain weight. Yeah, that's a thyroid. Now, like I said, there's a lot of strings attached to it. That's why I like to look at estrogen, progesterone, okay? I like to look at cortisol. That has a major effect on the thyroid. I like to look at the liver that has a major effect on the thyroid pancreas that has a major effect on the thyroid. I like to look at all of it. Okay? That's a functional medicine doctor, okay?
Looks at all of it. Sees the big picture, okay? How often are those tests wrong? That's a good question, mark. They can be wrong every time on it. Okay, Joan, for some reason, my body does not absorb magnesium very well. I read one reason because of a lack of B six. Would you agree? No. Well, look, I guess it's possible. Usually when you got to malabsorption syndrome, there's a couple of things that you can bypass that Joanne, okay? Epson, salt baths and magnesium on your skin. Get a magnesium cream, put it right on your skin, goes right to your bloodstream, okay? There are very few people that can't absorb magnesium in a supplement, but if you're one of them, I never found B six to be helpful. I want you to eat your B vitamins. Eat steak. You get all your B vitamins. Did you know that?
Eat an egg. You get all your B vitamins, not enough. B12, you get cheese, all your B vitamins, not enough B12, but steak does, but you get all your other B vitamins. That's why you don't hear me talking about, I talk about B12, but I don't talk about the other B vitamin. Do you think? I don't know about 'em. Of course I know about 'em, but when you eat steak, you get 'em all. Okay, malabsorption, eh, put it on your skin. Some people just use magnesium under skin. It gets into your bloodstream and so does Epsom salt bats. Very good way of getting magnesium. Okay, that was a good question. Thank you very much. And that was Joan Darcy. I don't think I looked at this the other day. Did I do these alternatives for sugar? Even in magnesium drinks affect my liver just as bad as sugar would.
Well, no, no. When you mean alternatives for sugar, I'm suggesting you're thinking Darcy, Stevia, what else were you thinking of? Artificial sugars or thinking of your alternative sugars like areal and mallet all don't touch 'em all at all with a hundred foot pole. Those are sugar alcohols, okay? Do they affect my liver? They wouldn't affect your liver bad as like a high fructose corn syrup. Nothing worse than that. They're going to have more effect on your microbiome and your gut. Okay, now stevia is good. Okay? I find stevia to be very good. I don't like the taste of it so much. I find it a little dry for me, but I got rid of my sweet tooth. I don't need the sweetened stuff.
But if you do, more microbiome effect can cause dysbiosis than affecting your liver. Good question. You guys are so smart. I can't get over it. Can a person be cured from atrial? This is Kim atrial tachycardia with proper diet and exercise. Well, cured is a good word. I like the word managed better. Okay, look, each steak you get coq 10 with tachycardia. I would usually, when I ever saw it, deficiencies B12 vitamin D, magnesium coq 10, I'd have you on navit all too pine bark extract. Okay? And yeah, I like proper diet and exercise for sure. I mean, it's good for you. Absolutely 100%. Can you cure it? I don't know. I've seen it where it was fixed. Raymond is having a lot of bacon bad for your heart, Raymond. You eat as much bacon as you want and it's the, I'm not saying the best thing for your heart because steak is better, but bacon is so good for your heart. I was explaining this to someone yesterday. They see grease greasy and they see the fat on bacon. Ooh, that's got to be bad. Fat, bad. Cholesterol, bad.
I said no. Look at that bacon fat as oil. Do you like olive oil? Oh yeah, I heard that's good for me. Well, bacon's got the same oil. It's called oleic acid. Bacon tastes better than olive oil. Bacon is better for you than olive oil. Olive oil is good. Bacon's better. It's got more vitamins, got more amino acids, got more minerals, got more protein, got more healthy fat. Why would you choose olive oil and not bacon? Bacon's better and it's only good for your heart. Why? It gives you a lube job. Just brought my car in for service. Oil change and lubrication. Squirt, squirt, squirt squirt, squirt, squirt squirt, right? They lube. I don't know anything about my car, but you better change the oil. Eat bacon, changing your oil and you're lubricating. You're making those blood vessels slippery. You don't want them to be sticky, do you?
You know what destroys your blood vessels? Sugar does, not bacon. Sugar glycates, hardens, damages your blood vessels, not bacon. I don't care what your doctor tells you. I don't care what your dietician tells you. They don't know what they're talking about. Bacon, bad, bacon, bad cholesterol, bad, fat, bad, especially saturated fat. No, it's not. It's good for you. Okay. You guys know me. I've been consistent. Eat bacon. I had so many patients in the office, especially men. Okay? Especially men, because I said, look, I want you to do the reset. What the heck, Dr. Martin? Am I going to eat in the morning? I usually have my oatmeal. I said, do you like bacon? You bet your boots. I love bacon. Well then go home and have bacon in the morning. You like sausages? Yeah, but I said, I don't care what your doctor said. Go to your plumber. You're going to get better nutritional advice than your doctor has.
Your doctor didn't take any nutrition in school. All or he or she took was that cholesterol is bad and fat is bad. No, it's not, fat head. It's good for you. Oil. Sugar glycates, fat lubricates. I like that. Sugar, glycates, hardens and fat lubricates. Eat the right fat. Got it? Bacon. Anyways, they used to leave giving me a high five. Well, my doctor said I can't have bacon. I'm telling you to have as much bacon as you want. You like bacon. Have it every day, have it every meal. I don't care what? I don't even want you to count. Have as much as you want. Do you like it? I love it. Well go for it. You want to make the reset easier? Eat bacon. You like bacon and eggs? Yeah, I love bacon and eggs. Have it leave the toast behind what I told you about my dipper friend, right? He said, doc, I can't have eggs, bacon and eggs. I don't have toast. I got to dip. I said, pretend take bacon and dip it in your eggs. The dipper, I call them. Okay?
Anyway, I had a lot of fun in my practice, in my word. Okay guys. Okay, we're done. I think, wait a minute, let me make sure here because then I'm going to get Doc, you forgot about me. Oh yeah. We talked about sourdough bread the other day, didn't we? Sourdough bread is a better bread. I had to answer the question yesterday. Somebody was talking to me at church, okay? And said, doc, you said sour. Well, it's a better bread that's fermented. But if you got trouble with insulin for 30 days, you don't have any bread. And I don't care if it's sourdough. I want that insulin down. Now, sourdough is a better bread, there's no doubt about a real sourdough. Okay? But I don't want you living on bread, man shall not live by bread alone. Okay? I told that to a waitress yesterday when she brought me bread. I said, you read your Bible? She said, no. I said, can I tell you what's in it? Man shall not live by bread alone, but every word that proceeds out of the mouth of the Lord. And she looked at me and I said, yeah, that's in the Bible. That's why don't bring me bread. Okay? Okay, guys. We love you dearly and sincerely, Patricia with baby boomers to make sure we don't get dementia. Okay, let me answer that.
You know what? Maybe I got a couple of more here. Yeah. Okay. I got a couple of more to do. We can look at these. Yeah. Two questions here that I see. Three that I haven't done yet. Okay. This week, just giving you a little heads up and then we'll post this tomorrow morning and Wednesday, Thursday, Friday. Watch guys for it. I am traveling. Tony Jr. and I are going to a conference in Denver, so I think I'm going to do it. Denver time would be Mountain Time, isn't it 6:30 AM which would still bring me back to 8:30 Eastern. Okay. I'm looking at that. I haven't seen the schedule for the conference, but I don't think there's anything going on at 6:30 in the morning, do you? I should be good guys, okay to do the podcast all week, including question and answer on Friday. Okay? Love you guys, talk to you soon.
