Dr. Martin answers questions sent in by our listeners in today's episode.
TRANSCRIPT OF TODAY'S EPISODE
Announcer: You're listening to The Doctor Is In Podcast, brought to you by MartinClinic.com. During the episode, the doctors share a lot of information. As awesome as the info may be, it is not intended to diagnose, cure, treat, or prevent any disease. It's strictly for informational purposes.
Dr. Martin: Well, good morning everyone, and once again, welcome to another live this morning, our question and answer Friday. Always a lot of fun, and I thank you for coming on with us and making the Doctor is in such a very, very popular program. Okay, let's get to our questions, Deb. Why is it that some people get fevers easily and others don't get fevers at all? Well, that's a good question. Look, a fever is actually good for you. A lot of times we spend too much time and effort to lower fevers. Fevers are part of your body's immune system. People that never get them. I wouldn't be bragging about that too much, but Deb, everybody's different. Yesterday I was answering a question that was sent to me on autoimmune, and I just want to use it as an example for like a pharmacist told this person who sent me an email, well, you shouldn't be on probiotics because probiotics help your immune system and you have an autoimmune disorder.
We don't want that. Well, look, first of all, your immune system is complex and when you have autoimmune, your body is turning on itself. But you still want probiotics because where did autoimmune come from? Leaky gut. Deb, back to your question. Look for some people, everybody's different. Their immune systems, some of them work better one way than the other way or whatever, but I'm never against a fever. You want that? That's your body's response to a virus or a bacteria. And someone that doesn't get that, I would say their immune system is faulty. I'd certainly have them on more vitamin D. I've seen it a few times. But anyways, Deb, there's Deborah and Deb. Deborah is asking, is it good to take chlorella even though I'm taking Navit all? Well, they're two different things. Chlorella, look, I mean it's a green lipid. I've used it in the past.
I don't mind it. There's nothing wrong with it. You're using it for iron. I mean, it will elevate your iron a little bit. I would rather, Deborah, just to tell you the truth, I'd rather you eat a steak or eat some liver than chlorella as far as iron. You got more iron in a steak and you got a better iron too. You got a heme iron, H-E-M-E heme iron is found in steak in red meat, liver. But Deborah, look, I like chlorella. Okay, I got no problem. You like it? Take it. Okay. Okay. Caroline, I have heard that living on ketosis is not good and causes health issues in the long run. Maybe the doc can talk about it. Well, thank you for the question, guys. The answer is fuel ketosis means you're burning fat rather than burning carbs, you change fuels and that's why you hear keto all the time.
A keto diet, okay? Now I'm not big on keto per se because the food industry, you think they're stupid. When the food industry realizes that people are reading, they're doing their own homework type of thing, and they like the low carb diets, the food industry tries to get involved in order to make money. And so you go to Costco, you go to the grocery store, you go and you pick up keto foods. Most of them are processed. I don't like them. A lot of them are very high in omega six. I'm not big on that. I'm big on eggs, meat and cheese. So when you eat, I'll tell you, okay, because it's a very good question, Caroline. When you go on the reset, you're going to go into ketosis. Why? Because you're burning fat, you're changing fuels. It's better for you. If you ever met an Inuit or you go to different tribes around the world that still exist today and most of their lives, they live in ketosis.
They're not sitting around eating cookies and bread. They're eating meat, they're consuming dairy, they're eating eggs. You're going to get a better fuel. I'm all about rocket fuel. So ketones is just burning rocket fuels, okay? That's all it means, and it's actually quite good for you. So what you've heard, Caroline, is not true. I know some of our followers here have been really burning ketones for years and years and years. It's so good for your brain. Look, this idea that your body needs carbohydrates, look, I'm not saying never eat a carbohydrate. All I'm saying is your body can live without a carbohydrate because your body has the ability to take a piece of steak literally and turn it to glucose if it's needed. The best fuel is ketones made by eating eggs, meat and cheese. I stay away from keto foods. I don't like them.
I don't like anything that's processed or whatever. Look, you want to have a keto snack, and I'm not asking you to leave the planet, nor am I asking you. Look, I give you a plan to succeed. Now for 30 days, I'm pretty strict because that's the reset. The reset puts you into ketosis. The reset detoxifies. The reset lowers your insulin, the reset lowers your inflammation. The reset will help you to lower your blood pressure because it takes pressure off your kidneys. The reset is good for your liver, it empties it and all this and that. So that's pretty strict for 30 days, but there's nothing better for you. And people have extended that out. And there's a lot of people that eat very little carbohydrate and they'll have some fruits and vegetables, but they don't live on them. And they realize that the better burning fuel is eggs, meat and cheese.
It's just a better fuel for your body. And I know there's a lot of propaganda out there, and you're going to get it thrown at you every day. I do. Vegan, vegetarian, vegan, vegetarian, better, less acidic, yada, yada, yada. Nonsense. Nonsense. And doctors knew. Remember yesterday I was saying that by 1929, we already knew that cancer and sugar, there's a huge connection. Auto Warburg, the Warburg effect that cancer cells were ravenous. Do you know what? Also, we knew in the 1920s that if someone had epilepsy and you put 'em on a ketotic diet, no carbs, okay, no carbs. They still do it a little bit today for kids that have epilepsy. I know that for a fact. It's so helpful. We knew that in the 1920s. But again, ketones and ketosis got mixed up with people that don't know better between ketosis and ketoacidosis. That's a different puppy altogether.
Ketoacidosis is no good for you. It's when you're dying. Your body goes into ketoacidosis, your body starts eating its muscle, and that's not good ketoacidosis. A diabetic can go into ketoacidosis because their blood sugar got so out of control. That's a different puppy altogether. But in a lot of people's minds, ketoacidosis, that must be the same as ketosis. No, it's not. No, it's not. But it was mixed up. And that's where you heard Caroline, that being in keto for a long time is not good for you. That's nonsense. It's not true. They're mixing up ketoacidosis, which is a medical condition. It's at the end of your life. I mean, you want to know if you're dying, you're going to go into ketoacidosis. You're on your way out, okay? Thanks for the question. I appreciate it, Marty. The book, the Calcium Lie, okay, what about it?
Okay, here's what Marty asked. Our bones are not made of calcium. Well, not exclusively, okay? And I never read the book the calcium lie because I've written books about the calcium lie. Okay? Now listen, you need calcium, okay? Your bones need it along with a lot of other minerals, by the way, your teeth need it, okay? Now you need calcium. Okay? But Marty, but calcium, okay, here's the illustration I love to use. Take a piece of cheese, okay? You got calcium in there. Yep. But not in the absence of the vitamin needed to take calcium because that was one of the big things I think in the calcium lie, right? In the book, that calcium, I mean you need a little bit in your blood, but you don't want a lot in your blood because calcium hardens the arteries. But you see what God did is he gave us food, eggs, meat and cheese.
And I know I repeat a lot, but in eggs, meat and cheese, you have calcium. Okay? Did you know when you have a steak, you have calcium, but in steak, in cheese, in butter, in an egg, you have calcium with vitamin K two. Why do you need that? Because vitamin K two will take calcium and put it where it belongs. That's the key of vitamin K two. But it's found in nature, it's found in eggs. Vitamin K two is not found in the plant kingdom. It's found in the animal kingdom. And then there's people that fold their arms and go, well, you don't need the animal kingdom to eat. And I get a migraine. I get a headache. Why do I get a headache? Because we're given K two to take calcium and put it where it belongs. If you're eating plants and you're getting calcium, okay, you can get some calcium in plants like spinach, but it doesn't have K two. Now, I'm not saying it's bad, I'm just saying, hey, that calcium ain't getting to the destination.
Soho, you need K two. But Marty, I agree with the author that your bone is not made up exclusively of calcium. Absolutely. And again, I didn't even read the book, but I have a feeling I know where the author is coming from, that calcium is overrated. Well, I don't necessarily put it overrated, but calcium needs to be combined with vitamin K two because somebody else asked another question. Let me get it. Here it is, Karen. Hi Karen. If someone has kidney problems, is it safe to take large doses of vitamin D three? Well, not without K two, okay, not without K two. Now guys, again, I just got to do it because there's always this notion mistaken, there's a war on vitamin D. Oh, you're going to destroy your kidneys with vitamin D. No, it's the opposite. If you don't have vitamin D, what did we talk about yesterday?
Vitamin D for the wind in cancer. What have I been saying for a kazillion years? Vitamin D for the wind. I mean, they looked at meta-analysis studies, meta meaning many, hundreds and hundreds of studies. They put it all together and they said, well, we talked about three things yesterday, right? Vitamin D, essential omega essential and exercise. Okay? 60% decrease in your risk of cancer. My word, why isn't that huge? Headlines everywhere, okay, but there's a war on vitamin D. I told you yesterday, if Health Canada gets their choice, you know what they're going to do? You can take vitamin D with a prescription.
That's their goal. Guys. You need to scream blue murder to your members of parliament and whatever. I mean it now, okay, vitamin D, okay, first of all, if you go out in the sun, you're going to get in 20 minutes. Well, not in Calgary, not in Edmonton, not in Canada, and not even in Florida. You haven't seen a lot of sun, but if you do go out in the sun, you get 10,000 IUs in 20 minutes on your arms and legs, don't use sunscreen on your arms and legs. I don't even want to go there. It makes me so angry. Okay? Anywho, get that vitamin D guys. But when you take a supplement, take vitamin D with K two, okay? And thank you for the question. Hold on a minute here. Marty and Karen Rose. Hello. My friend took berberine and his blood sugar spikes two hours after he takes it.
Does he eat some carbs? He does eat some carbs. Why would this be and what should he do? Well, look, if he's eating carbs, I don't care how much berberine you take, okay? Your blood sugar's going to go up, okay? You're eating carbs, they break down into sugars rapidly. And again, there's better carbs in fruits and vegetables than in a piece of bread. I know that, but I'm just telling you, you can take all the berberine or whatever, you cannot out supplement a bad diet. It's like people that are on metformin, okay? For diabetics, I tell 'em, look, that ain't going to end well. What doc? Well, you're taking something to control your blood sugar, right? Yeah. Well, it works. The problem is it's going to stop working unless you switch your diet. Because if you're a diabetic or a pre, if you're in the 93% of the population that is metabolically unwell, you and carbs don't get along and you can take berberine, you can take, I like afolaic acid.
The things that I like. Listen, they're good. I like them, but you got to do it with a diet. You got to just understand that you and carbs don't get along, okay? You just can't take a drug or a supplement and cheat on that. I mean, you could for a bit, but it's going to catch up to you because it's, at the end of the day, it's food. Okay? Thanks for the question. But Siah, let me just see here. Where are we at? Very good questions, Margaret. Margaret is getting personal. Okay, Margaret, I don't know if there's two Margarets or Margaret's. Got two questions. Here's one of them. Does Dr. Martin ever feel unwell?
Yeah. You know what? I used to tell people in my office, even on my radio show for years, don't brag. If you never get sick, don't brag to me, okay? Don't brag to me because let me go back a little bit. When a kid gets sick, mommy doctor, mom and daddy, okay, your kid is sick, your kid's got a fever, you are worried babies very sick, right? They got a bug and they're not, well, no, I'm not minimizing it, okay? I'm a parent. I'm a grandparent. I'm a great-grandparent. I'd rather get in front of a bust than have my kids get sick or my grandchildren or my great-grandchildren, okay?
But sickness is part of your body's immune system. And if you get a cold, I never get a cold doctor, man. I said, don't brag about that. That little virus that you couldn't see. If life depended on it, your body is going to respond to it. And you want to supercharge your immune system every once in a while. You know who asked early, early, who asked the question? I just got a Deb. Deb, Deb, I never get a fever. That's not good. You want your immune system to go through the drills because I'll tell you something. And like I said, I used to say this on my radio show because people was alive phoning. They call in Dr. Martin, I never get sick you. I said, well, yeah, I get a bug. I don't get a lot of them.
And your body says, get to bed. A dog knows what to do when they're sick. They just lie there. No, but it's supercharging your immune system for something bigger. That's what I used to tell people all the time on the radio, be careful for what you wish for because when your immune system doesn't go through those drills dealing with a virus or a bacteria, it's not ready when cancer comes around. So you know what? Look, I got to go back to this whole virus thing that took the world and the world went stupid. The world went stupid. Dr. Fauci yesterday, I think in front of Congress. You know what he said? Well, we just made up the six foot rule. It had no basis in science. Yeah. Hello. We just made up the mask. Because even Dr. Look, the first day in medical school, the first day they teach you a mask is crazy.
It doesn't work. Plus, plus, listen, Linda, listen. You know where a virus comes in more than anywhere else? Somebody give me the answer. Where does a virus come in more than anywhere else? And that's why I talk about the invisible mask. Ah, Mary, you got it. Oh, my audience. The eyes. When you touch your eyes, when you got a mask on your eyes, you learn that in medical school, on day one, a virus comes in mostly by the eyes. You touch your eyes. You know how many times, even with glasses, a I touch my eyes in a day, okay? The world went stupid because the virus. The virus instead of the immune system. The immune system, what is the invisible mask? Vitamin A. What was I screaming through? The whole thing. Get in the sun. They closed the beaches in Florida. I was John the Baptist. Stupid, stupid. Bring everybody to Florida and let them sit beside each other. What about the six foot rule? They made it up.
They made it up. I knew they did, but they threatened me. Shut up. I go crazy. The world went stupid. It went stupid because they weren't worried about our immune system. They were worried about the virus. Good luck. Touch your eyes. That's how it's transmitted more than any way else. Guys, I'm sorry if I rant, but I just sometimes I can't stand stupidity. I just can't stand it. It bothers me. Okay? It bothers me. I get upset. So guys here at the end of the day, what am I saying to you? Take care of your immune system. Wear the invisible mask. Eat vitamin S to get vitamin A. There's no vitamin A in the plant kingdom. Why do you think I scream so loud?
Yeah, but Dr. Martin on Netflix. I'm confused. Don't be confused. It's interesting. Yeah, sure. They're Hollywood production. Give them credit. They want you eating crickets. Yikes. Okay, thank you for that question. And Margaret, I really do try and practice what I preached. By the way, Margaret and I thank the Lord because you could be the healthiest person in the universe and walk across the street and get hit by a bus, okay? There are no guarantees in life. So I try and I mean it guys. I really try and eat well. I really do try and take care of myself, okay? Because I don't want to be a hypocrite. I don't want to be a hypocrite. I want to be able to lead by example. And I'm a pretty disciplined person, but do I ever get sick? Yeah, you bet. Your boots. I do. I'm doing everything I can, including vitamin D.
I take eight to 10,000 a day. And for me, and I take Omega-3 high, DHA, I take the best every day for my immune system. There ain't anybody on the planet that eats as much steak as me. Okay? Or red meat? Well, if there is, I haven't met them yet. Okay, thanks for the question, Margaret. Okay. Okay. No, Margaret, I don't know if it's the same Margaret or not. What's the difference between bone broth powder and beef gelatin powder? Well, look, my wife would give you a better answer and I'm going to give you, but beef gelatin is good for you, and it's usually used for thickening and it's got vitamins and minerals in there, but bone broth is different puppy, okay? It's got collagen, not gelatin and collagen.
It is full of amino acids. It's full of L glutamine and L lysine and L. You name all those amino acids, those essential carnitine and carn, zine and all that. That's all in bone broth. That's why I love bone broth so much. Do I like beef gelatin? Yeah. Yep. Okay. But they're not the same. They're not the same. Okay, thanks for the question, Margaret. Rita, do eggs feed pathogens like Epstein bar virus in the body? Nope. As a matter of fact, eggs because of their high level of protein and healthy fat, okay, would be anti Epstein bar virus would be anti that because your T cells, your navy seals of your immune system, they'll go after pathogens and they will go after viruses, but they need to be supercharged with vitamin D and don't put them to sleep with eating sugar. You'll put your t cells to sleep. This has been shown, I think it was back in 2005. I've got to go look it up again. And don't eat sugar. It's not good for cancer, as we well know, but it's not good for your immune system either. It sends your T cells into a siesta, into a siesta. So eggs don't do that. Eggs, supercharge eggs. Got vitamin D in there. Did you know that? Yeah.
Okay. They're not enough vitamin D in my opinion, but it's good for you. Just a complete food. Okay, thanks Rita. Billy, Joe, is there any testing you would recommend for adults with A DHD? I'm just trying to think of any medical tests. Usually. Here's what I found. Okay, and just generally it's a good question. Okay? It's a good question and you can get this done today. Okay? Get your omega levels checked, okay? If you can get a lab, that'll do it. I like checking A D, HD or anything in the brain. I like vitamin D because the brain don't work properly without high levels of vitamin D and B12. So get that tested. Now there's other things like A1C that's really important. I would add that tested because I find with A-D-H-D, A-D-D, anything in the brain cognitive wise, when they can't focus or whatever, usually their A1C is not good.
And then I go to the gut, but your microbiome, but good luck getting that tested. Okay, thank you for the question, Billy. Joe. Donald, I'm starting the reset today. Well, good for you. I'm happy with my weight. Okay, good for you. It suggested I take a teaspoon or two of extra virgin olive oil to help maintain my weight through the reset. Look, I like extra virgin olive oil. Okay, I like bacon better. Okay. Extra virgin olive oil, by the way, I really do like, okay, if it's real, make sure that you got real cold pressed, not diluted, extra virgin olive oil. But what makes olive oil famous is oleic acid. What makes bacon famous? Oleic acid plus bacon has a lot more potassium than a banana. How do you like that? I choose bacon for the wind.
Okay. And remember the reset, even though it's the healthiest weight loss program in the world, it's the healthiest, okay? But it wasn't created for weight loss. If you can do this, make weight loss a secondary issue for people, because if you do the reset and you need to lose weight, you will, you will. And I had a few people, oh, doc, I didn't lose any weight. Well, you're weird and you could have horror hormones and you want to fix those horror hormones. And one of the ways to fix the horror hormones is to do the reset. It really helps. But again, the reset is the healthiest weight loss program around. But if you don't need to lose weight, you shouldn't be losing weight on the reset. And if you're working out, you're gaining muscle. You see, the idea is your body is switching fuels. Plus not only that, you are going to, when you eat the right foods, you are going to burn fat, not muscle.
A lot of people, they lose weight. It's called yo-yo dieting and they were losing mostly muscle. You don't want that muscle is the greatest thing metabolically that you need. And when you're eating lots of protein and fat on the reset, you're helping your muscles to empty the bins so that you can even store more glycogen. Okay, and the last question, Margie. Margie is the way it's on my board here. It could be just Margie, could be Mar. I don't know. Anywho, what's my thought on? Well, I don't know much about it. I know it's a product and it's got lots of different herbs in there. But to be honest, I don't have any, and I don't even remember ever a patient that I remember in my practice that ever used it. So I can't tell you. Okay. I can't tell you. I have no personal experience with it.
Okay, guys, thank you for the questions. Thank you everyone for listening. I love you guys. Love my audience. Smart. I ask a question, the answer, you guys are just unreal. Okay? I mean that what an encouragement it is for me because my job is education. I'm going to educate you. I'm not in practice. I'm not your doctor, but I'm an educator. Okay? Can you imagine the poor college students or whatever? If they had me every day, I did a lot of teaching on nutrition over the years. Lots of it in lots of different venues. And again, like I said, I was more public because I had a radio show for 20 years. So I'm used to it. Okay guys, we love you and we'll talk to you soon.
