Dr. Martin answers questions sent in by our listeners in today’s episode.
TRANSCRIPT OF TODAY'S EPISODE
Announcer: You're listening to The Doctor Is In Podcast, brought to you by MartinClinic.com. During the episode, the doctors share a lot of information. As awesome as the info may be, it is not intended to diagnose, cure, treat, or prevent any disease. It's strictly for informational purposes.
Dr. Martin: Well, good morning everyone, and once again, welcome to another live this morning. We are happy to have you come on with us. Okay, let's get to these questions. We really appreciate you guys sending these questions in. What kind of a show would we have if we didn't have questions coming in? So we thank you, we appreciate it. Lots of good ones. Janine, what do I think of Allulose? Well, allulose is a new kid on the block. Apparently there are some gurus out there, some people that I actually follow to some extent that really like Allulose as a sweetener and they're talking about its benefits in terms of blood sugar and things like that. I think the jury to some extent is still out because I know in Canada they haven't approved it yet. As far as I know, the Health Canada hasn't approved it for sale here to put in foods or whatever they're going to do with it.
But I've heard some good things. Look, any sweetener I talked this week about Stevia? Okay, and anything you use Stevia. I've done a deep dive on Stevia for a long time by the way. And out of all the sweeteners out there, it's natural number one, not artificial in small doses. I think it's good for you. Okay? I think it's good for you, but I always say in small doses you don't want to be living on stuff even though it ain't sugar. And even though there's no calories, it's still to me, so allulose, let's wait and see. Like I said, I guess it's probably for sale in the us. I don't know, but not in Canada yet apparently. Okay, thanks for the question, Janine. Daphne, what causes tendonitis? Well, look, I mean injury. You know where I saw the most? Tendonitis, elbows, shoulders and knees a lot of times repetition.
Tennis elbow, A lot of people get a tendonitis from gripping repeated use. Look, the other factor in tendonitis is what I call glycation. And that is when sugar attaches itself to protein, we call it glycation and a lot of people, and I mean thousands over the years who had a bad tendonitis, let's say in their elbow or their wrist or their knee or whatever, and then they lay off sugar and either doing the reset or what and they said, you know what doc? I got a lot less pain. And I said, well, because you had glycation advanced aging end products, we call that glycation. And so anyway, yeah, could be that anti-inflammatory diets help. What causes inflammation? Sugar. Sugar lay off. Okay, thanks Daphne. Judy, what would defer tonsillectomy? Well look, Judy, I'm going to ask a question to my audience, okay? Instead of me answering, I'm going to wait for my audience to answer. Okay? What mask should you wear to cover your mouth, your nose and your eyes? What mask should you wear waiting?
Annette vitamin A. Gerie vitamin A, Wendy vitamin A. You got it? You got it Dave? Vitamin A. Look. Gertie steak, that's where you get vitamin A. Okay, Diane, you got it Doc McEwen, you got it guys. Does it surprise me that you know this? So when you get a tonsil problem, remember one thing, okay? Your tonsils are there to protect you, okay? And when I was a little kid, I was one of the few kids in my class that didn't lose their tonsils in the 1950s, they would lure you kids like me, my classmates, they'd lure you at the first sign of tonsillitis to the hospital with ice cream. I remember telling my dad, okay, you didn't negotiate with my dad by the way, but I remember telling my dad, dad, I want to get my tonsils up. And he said, why? Because I said everybody else is, and they go to the hospital and they can stay overnight and get ice cream.
You know the Dixie cups? Do you have to be my age to know what I'm talking about here? The Dixie cups, they used to give you a Dixie cup of ice cream if you got your tonsils up, my dad said over my dead body, you need your tonsils. They're good for you. You don't take them out, you keep them. What if they get infected? Well, that's what they're supposed to do. My dad said they're the traps. Tonsils are trapped doors. They stop bacteria and viruses from getting into your lungs better to have an infection in your throat than down into your lungs. I learned that as a kid. Imagine that.
So what does vitamin A do? Vitamin A is an invisible mask. We don't talk about it very much. They want to talk about the other mask that doesn't work. First of all, you touch your eyes. Are you going to wear a mask on your eyes too? Wear the invisible mask, vitamin A. Where do you get vitamin A in vitamin S? Steak. Vitamin A is only found in the animal kingdom. Betacarotene on the other hand, and I'm not saying it's no good, is found in the plant kingdom. That's a precursor to pro retinol A. Okay, so for tonsillitis, put on your mask. Here's another thing that I always recommend, gargle, okay? Don't use mouthwash because it'll decrease your nitric oxide. You don't want that. I've always spoke against that. Use oil of oregano, gargle, gargle. Put a few drops and some warm water. Add a little bit of salt and gargle the best thing you can do without wiping out all your good bacteria.
Isn't that nice? Oil of oregano knows the difference between bad and good. Why do you think God gave us oil of oregano? Okay, vitamin A oil of oregano. Love it. Tonsillitis, but remember the tonsils are just doing their job. Isn't it funny now that here we are in 2023, almost at the end of it and it just shows you the paradigm shift in physician's thinking because in the 1950s you don't need, and you'll tell you why they said it, you don't need your tonsils. They're part of evolution. You just haven't lost them yet. But we will as a species, I'm not kidding you. That was in the medical textbooks and you know what? They found out they were stinking wrong. That tonsils are actually on your side and the body needs them. Now you can live without tonsils, but God gave you tonsils as trapped doors for bacteria and viruses. My word, isn't it funny? My dad knew that. Anyway, okay, that was Judy by the way, with the tonsillectomy Jackie, Gary Harris. Skin disease. That's vitamin a deficiency, isn't it? I can't remember now. Dare he ears. Look, anytime you get skin, I think that's a genetic thing. If I'm not mistaken. It can be a genetics that you're not absorbing Vitamin A. I got to Google it. I can't remember now exactly, I've seen it before.
Anyw who? Anything with the skin. Remember what I've always said? I don't care what kind of skin condition that is, it starts in the gut. Now there may be some genetics in that and nutritionally Jackie, lay off the sugar. There's usually fungus, there's yeast, candida on the skin. Okay, let me look that one up so I give you a better answer. Okay? Shona or Shauna for vitamin D, if the blood work shows that your D levels are above the threshold and you do not supplement, what does this mean? Well, Shauna, I wish you would've put some numbers in there because what I like in vitamin D and what the powers to be like are two different numbers altogether, okay? I like vitamin D in blood work to be optimized. I like B12 in blood work to be optimized. Doctors, okay? Their training is vitamin D, the waiting rooms, the emergency departments, and it's almost like millions of people a year are dying from too much Vitamin D.
They scare the living life out of you on vitamin D. I've never seen anything like it. And guys, you know what I say all the time? There's a war on vitamin D. Here's the research, okay, here's the research. In order to become toxic on vitamin D, you would have to take 50,000 units a day, seven days a week for six months in order for it to be toxic. My word, but Google it and you'll see vitamin D, hyper vitam os D. It's unreal, but here's the truth, okay? Here's the truth, Shauna, it's actually the opposite.
People are dying and the waiting rooms are full of people dying and unwell because they don't have enough vitamin D in their body. It's the opposite. Now you're not going to hear that other than here. Generally I have been so consistent about vitamin D for the last 40 something years and I have been preaching it, I have been talking about it, I write about it. Sun steak and steel and sun. Sun, sun is not the boogeyman. Now back to your question, okay? Because you're asking the question, and that is if you get high vitamin D above the threshold, whatever that is, that depends.
My threshold is different, but if you're told you got high vitamin D and some people get high vitamin D for several reasons, the number is high, but it doesn't concern me too much, but I'll tell you why it can happen. A lot of medications, people that are on medications, especially antacids, high blood pressure medication including diuretics, estrogen replacement therapy can elevate your levels of vitamin D conditions like hyperparathyroid, okay? Not your thyroid, but parathyroid glands that regulate your calcium can give you high vitamin D levels in your blood. Lymphoma, sarcoidosis, what else?
Tuberculosis, which is coming back by the way, can give you high levels of vitamin DI don't worry about that too much and I mean it if you take vitamin D as a supplement and you should make sure you're vitamin D with K two. Okay? And when you eat vitamin D, think of it, vitamin D is found in food, eggs, meat and cheese. It's only found in the animal kingdom, okay? Isn't it interesting? God puts vitamin D in food, calcium in food with the vitamin, it needs to put it into the right place. What is that? Vitamin K two. Okay, thank you Shauna. You got me excited. Anytime I talk about vitamin D, I get excited. Okay, Francis Pericarditis, how do people get it? Well, you can get an infection, you get a virus. Your tonsils didn't block it, it got down into your heart. Some people get pericarditis.
An infection in your gums can travel through the bloodstream and hit your heart pericarditis. A lot of people can get pericarditis virus bacteria. One of the biggest things that I really like in anything around the heart is coq 10 ubiquinol. Okay? Coq 10 ubiquinol. You should see the studies on ubiquinol. It's incredible. Whenever I think of ubiquinol coq 10, okay, the only coq 10 that's absorbed by the way, and you get coq 10 when you eat steak. Hallelujah. And coq 10, good for the brain. Think of battery packs. Heart. Think of your battery packs. Mitochondria, think of your liver. Some people, how do I cleanse my liver? Well, first of all, lay off the stinking carbs so that you empty it, but coq 10 is good because you got a lot of mitochondria in your liver cells and you want to supercharge. Think of batteries. I was using a remote the other day and it didn't work. That's the only power tool that I know how to use a remote.
My wife said don't pick up a tool, you're going to destroy things, okay? You can't fix them, you're going to destroy. Well, I'm good with a remote except that the batteries were no good. You got to change the batteries. That's what mitochondria are. And you got a lot of mitochondria in your brain. You got a lot of mitochondria in your heart and if you get a pericarditis, you really want to take care. Of course there's inflammation, infection, oil of oregano, probiotics. Okay, high DHA and coq 10. Okay, that was Francis GaN. You know what I can't even say here. GaN Hirt. Why do some people bruise more than others? Well, I'll tell you why. Okay, put your finger up. Put your thumb up. You got a fingerprint there that no one else. Do you know that we're over 8 billion people on the planet now If we leave it up to Bill Gates, we'll be down to about 2 billion or less.
They want to wipe us out. Oh, anyway, put your thumb up and your fingerprint is different than everybody else's, okay? Some of us never get bruising. Some of us bruise easier. It could be your capillaries. I mean, whenever there's bruising, if it just shows up for no reason, I always got that checked out because it could be a sign of a blood disorder, a leukemia or something like that. But generally just some people bruise easily. I don't bruise that easily, but I know people that just, you look at them the wrong way and they bruise, eh, not too worried about it. Okay, thank you for the question. Lisa, are copper bracelets worth getting for arthritis? Look, good question. I would say no generally, but some people swear by them. Good for them. I got no problem with it. You know my expression, if I thought hanging you upside down from a building would help you with any condition, I'll go and hold your feet.
I used to tell my patients that all the time, but generally when you ask me something in a general fashion, I would say copper bracelets, nah. I mean look, they've been around a long time. I remember in the seventies, people, copper bracelet, Dr. Martin and I could see the ring around their wrist or whatever and I said, is that working for you? And they said, I think so. Okay. I said, I got no problem with it. You like it? I wouldn't want something around my wrist. I got to watch. That's enough. And don't give me one of those smart watches. I don't like the idea of people talking to me all the time or tracking me or I guess they can track you through your phone anyway. Okay, thank you Lisa. Lisa, if it works for you, good for you. Kathy. Process meats. Should we steer clear?
No, no. Look. Okay. Philosophy. Philosophy 1 0 1, Dr. Martin's philosophy 1 0 1. Okay, good. Better, best. When I say eggs, meat and cheese, I mean it all meats are good. Some are better and steak is the best. Okay? All meats are good. If you're on the reset, you don't even have to ask the question. All meats are good. And then somebody else asked it because I thought I saw that. Wait a minute, let me get to it so I can answer it at the same time. Oh, Sherry, I understand nitrates are found in veggies. Yep. But what about the ones added to meats? Yep. Added by man. Yep. Limiting this. I'm confused. Well, Sherry, don't be confused. Processed meats, they salt them. Nitrate is a salt. Are nitrates bad? Nah, they got a bad rap. Come on. You know what I mean? But again, you are better off taking a hot dog than a chocolate bar.
You are better off taking salted meats, deli meats. Oh, I don't go near a deli all bad. No, it's actually quite good for you. Now there's better. There's better, but there's still good. And the reason I say that, okay, again, I'm giving you philosophy 1 0 1 is because process meets will not increase your insulin. What is the overarching principle that 93% of the population have? Sherry and Kathy, what do 93% of the population have? What did 93% of the population are on the Titanic? Don't worry about the deck chairs on the Titanic. Okay? Don't worry about the deck chairs. Worry about hitting the iceberg. Worry about the big picture and then when you get your, Hey, I'm in really good shape. My A1C is down, my triglycerides are down, my HDL is up, everything is wonderful, well then I am only going to eat the best. Got it. See, that's my philosophy and I'll tell you what. Okay, I think it's important to understand this. I used to give my patients a recipe for success, not for failure. The reset is tough enough on anyone. I don't care who you are. If you're a carbo holic, the reset is tough. You're not having any carbs or sugars.
And by the way, I get it, you got to travel to Timbuktu to find bacon where they don't add a little bit of sugar to it. But I would still listen, listen, get the big picture first, get off the Titanic or at least change directions of the Titanic, your body, and then you can get into the deck chairs, then you can rearrange the furniture. Then if you want to go organic, go organic. But you have to understand that I saw tens and thousands of patients over the years and I understood that if I said no, you'd never, ever, ever have processed me. Some people do that. Don't you go near a deli. I like deli. Oh, too bad you can't have it. Not me. I used to say I want to give you a recipe for success. You like deli meat? I do. Dr. Martin, do you eat deli meat? You bet your boots. I do. I love deli meat. I married an Italian.
I used to go to my father-in-law's and man, he'd slice up that meat. I love that meat. Okay, I'm a meat guy in case you guys didn't know. Okay, so thanks for the question because it gives me a chance to pontificate. I want you folks to succeed. And then I've got people on our group, they are so religious about not putting anything in their mouth. Well, good for you. You got there. That's all right. I got no problem with that. But again, when I talk to people generally and I'm trying to get them, they steer their ship in the right direction, I want them to win, not to lose because what used to happen, a lot of people are like, you know what doc, I can't afford organic. Okay, you don't have to go organic. It's better, but you don't have to. You can be healthy without it.
Got it. Okay. Thank you for the question, Kathy. And I got excited and I didn't mean to. Okay, a few more questions and I am not going to hit everything today. Maria, do you have comments on tea drinkers compared to coffee? Well, just about every day, Maria, I talk about it. I feel sorry for them. I even wrote it in my last book, why would you drink tea when you can drink coffee? And to some extent, I'm pulling their leg tea's good guys. Tea is good for you. Did you know that? Yeah, sure it is. It's good. But it's not best coffee's best. Okay, it is Scott. A lot more research. Tea is good. I feel sorry for people that don't like coffee. I love them. I do. I care for them. I feel sorry for them because they're not getting the real vitamin C.
They're getting a little bit of vitamin T tea tea's good. Don't put garbage in it. Okay, now tea's. All right. And oh, what were you saying, Maria? More caffeine and tea than coffee. Yeah, there may be a little bit more. But anyway, it's, look, the reason I like coffee so much is because, and I've been saying this guys, you know that, okay, one thing you can say about me, Dr. Martin is consistent. Okay? That doesn't mean you can't change my mind, and I don't think I got a cement block up there, but you know what? Coffee, I've been saying it for so long and so consistently. And the more research they do on coffee, is there a supplement like the real vitamin C, the real one, it beats ascorbic acid, it beats it down. It's so much better now. I'm not against ascorbic acid. It doesn't hold a candle to the real vitamin C, coffee.
And boy, we got a good one coming. Oh, I excited. Okay, and maybe one more here. If cleaning or detoxing the liver in six days when doing the reset, would doing an extended fast, let's say 48 hours when starting the reset would speed up the process of emptying your liver? Yeah, I think it would Celine, look again, you to understand me, okay? I'm big on fasting without fasting, okay? If you eat the right foods, and I mean that, there's two things. The biggest thing in food is how much insulin you need to break it down and how much of the digestive process when you eat the right foods. And it's one of the reasons, Celine, let me finish with this. It's one of the reasons that people that eat when they go on the reset, Dr. Martin, I hardly go to the bathroom. I hardly, and I'm so worried about that because guys, listen to me, poo number two is overrated. I'm not saying you shouldn't go, but you don't need to have big poos. You don't win a prize for having that. And when you're a carbo holic, oh, fiber, fiber, fiber. You know that coffee's the best fiber water's the best fiber anyway, okay? Anyway, what I'm saying is, okay, when you want to clean your liver, if you eat the right foods, even without fasting, you're going to clean your liver.
Remember what gets up into the liver in nanoseconds, high fructose corn syrup, there's nothing that will pack up your liver faster than that. The other thing I like is intermittent fasting. Don't eat at night, okay? Don't eat at night. Try and have an early supper. Try and don't eat at night. That helps your digestion and it helps your insulin. The two biggest things that I'm looking for, and if you can do a 48 hour fast, like no eating at all, just drinking water and coffee, go for it. I got no problem with it, but the vast majority of people won't do that. And that's why I don't talk about it that much, okay? I am not saying it's no good, I'm just saying me. Got it. Okay. Thanks for the question. Okay guys, I am going to probably take up the rest of this on Monday, so we'll probably have a question and answer Monday. We got lots of questions and I pontificated way too long. Love you guys very dearly. Talk to you soon.
