1189. Sugar Shock: 8x More Addictive Than Cocaine?

Sugar is not your friend. This is something that Dr. Martin preaches all the time, encouraging listeners not to buy the lie of moderation. It’s not moderation, it’s elimination and it is really important that you understand this.

Join Dr. Martin as he discusses the destructive effects of sugar on our brains. For kids it can lead to ADHD, and for adults, Alzheimer's and dementia.

TRANSCRIPT OF TODAY'S EPISODE

Announcer:  You're listening to The Doctor Is In Podcast, brought to you by MartinClinic.com. During the episode, the doctors share a lot of information. As awesome as the info may be, it is not intended to diagnose, cure, treat, or prevent any disease. It's strictly for informational purposes.

Dr. Martin:  Well good morning everyone, and once again, welcome to another live this morning, the start of another week, and we're always happy to have you on with us. And I promise, I promise we're going to have a fun week. So how are you? Okay, now guys, got my little board back here. If you do nothing else, guys, if you do nothing else, what do you want to do? Get rid of sugar, okay? Don't buy the lie of moderation. Nope. Sugar terrible. And eight times more addictive than cocaine. Okay? Eight times more addictive than cocaine. And I want to show you this morning what we talk about all the time. It's not moderation, it's elimination. And this is really important that you understand it. Sugar is not your friend. Sugar is not your friend.

And in this day and age, when the average North American is consuming about 200 pounds of sugar a year each, not good. Okay? Not good. So let's just go over some stuff that is frightening and everything we're going to point to today has gotten a lot worse. A lot worse. Okay, let's start. Sugar and children. Okay, sugar and children. What do we got? ADHD, ADD. Listen, when I was a kid, I majored in recess. Did I like school? No, I didn't. I liked recess. I liked getting outside. I liked playing outside. I loved sports and I needed to move. I was a kid that couldn't stand to sit down. But today we have a whole different class and perhaps we're a little bit trigger happy to label kids. I get that. We're a little bit trigger happy to label kids, but parents would agree. Teachers agree that when you give sugar to kids, it does something to their brain. Okay?

Now, grandparents, we don't care so much. We always say, well, I am going to give you sugar. Okay, so that you go home and give your parents back what they gave us. No, I don't do that. You know what? As a matter of fact, my grandchildren are so smart. They say, grandpa, you always, always talk about sugar and how negative it is for us, okay? And I'm just because I love 'em and I want to protect them and listen, I know their kids and whatever, but the truth is the truth. And we have an epidemic of sugar in the brains of kids and they get ADD, ADHD and all sorts of behavioral issues. As a matter of fact, I'll say this, when you look at kids that get into trouble all the time, and I used to sit kids down in my office and have a little chat with them, I had a little chat with kids that would come to the office.

I said, listen, do you like being in trouble? No. I'm going to tell you what sets you off. If you start your day with cereal, with Pop-Tarts, whatever you start your day with, you are going to be in big doo doo by the time you get to school. Your brain is going to get on another level. It's going to race and you're going to be in trouble at school. You're not going be able to focus. Your brain is going to be all over the place and your body is trying to follow your brain. Your body wants to move, and the teacher wants you to sit. True or false? I used to say to these kids, true or false? Yes, that's true. I said, okay, I'm going to show you something. I'm going to help you in this area. Okay, kids, I'm going to help you.

Now you got to take some responsibility. It's not just mommy and daddy, it's you. Okay? You're smart. You and sugar don't get along. You got the memo? "Yeah, but Doc, I love sugar." I know, but it don't love you because you and sugar have a bad relationship, especially your brain. And now you're in trouble. And I said, you got to understand that you're like a canary in the coal mine. Your brain is hypersensitive and it's very hypersensitive to sugar. I said, you got that? And then I would teach them all breads, pasta, noodles and all this and that, your muffins, bagels, blah, blah. I said, look, they're not better options. They're not because they all turn to sugar rapidly. I said, you got that? Yeah. And kids are smart. They get it. I said, look, just understand this. I'm not telling you to leave the planet. I'm not telling you if it's your birthday that you can't have birthday cake. I'm not telling you that you can't have a treat. All I'm telling you is you and sugar don't get along. You have to understand that, okay? Sugar in the brain of children, you got trouble. Okay?

You know the song, Sugar in the Morning, Sugar in the Evening, Sugar at Supper Time? Okay, I can't sing it. Okay. Sugar and adult brain number two, got that. See it. Sugar and the adult brain, what does that happens there? Alzheimer's, dementia. Yeah. Sugar is destructive in an adult brain. It's destructive in kids, but it's very destructive in the adult brain. 2005 Nobel Prize in medicine, the discovery of sugar. Sugar and Alzheimer's. Type 3 diabetes it was called, in the brain. The brain is diabetic, maybe the rest of the body isn't, but the brain is, and that my friend is the primary cause of Alzheimer's and dementia. Look, there's connection to leaky gut. You know me and my fascination with leaky gut. But all I'm saying guys, is if you want to be into prevention, if you do nothing else and cut out sugar in your diet and all those added sugars that are in the foods, in the middle aisles of your grocery store. Stay awake because nobody on God's earth wants to get Alzheimer's or dementia, right? The biggest fear in seniors is losing our brains. Sugar is destructive to a child's brain and an adult's brain. It's amazing how many children when they got this memo, got better. It wasn't that complicated.

Now you need cooperation because I wasn't Houdini, I had no magic for them. I would give them a couple of supplements for their brain that really helped. High DHA for kids and Navitol, I found that to be extremely effective. And teachers often would call me, holy moly, Dr. Martin, what did you do? I'd said, well, it's really what they did. They changed their breakfast. Kids when they get it, okay, adults, Alzheimer's, what can you do? It's not genetics. Okay? Medicine loves genetics. I'll tell you why. They love genetics. They like to go, hey, it's not your fault. So here's medication. It's not your fault. I mean, look, see this face? You can't see it. But there should be a sign written right across my forehead says, my name is Tony and I'm a carboholic and me and sugar don't get along. Me and carbs don't get along. I got diabetes in my family coming out the wazoo. It should be written right on my forehead. But I don't try and fool myself. I admit my weakness.

And listen, folks, when Nobel prizes are given out in medicine for finding the connection between sugar and an adult brain, Alzheimer's or dementia, they, take that seriously. And like I said, hidden, you can hardly even find anybody talking about it. It's too bad, but that's the truth. Number three, well, we all know this one. There isn't a dentist. There's not a dentist in the universe, so it wouldn't say number three, sugar destroys teeth. Would you not agree with that? Yeah. Every dentist agrees with that, and yet they give a kid a sucker or a lollipop on the way out. Okay? But really any dentist knows that sugar causes cavities. True or false? Of course, it's true. Yeah, but sugar does a lot more than that. Not just bad for your teeth, it's bad for your oral health too, because it feeds fungus, it feeds bacteria in your mouth. Bad guys, sugar in the teeth, cavities. We all agree.

Number four, sugar in the skin. Okay? The skin and wrinkles. Okay? Now this is similar. I'm just going to show you something. Sugar in the skin and sugar in the joints. Okay? Can you see that down there? Sugar in the joints, but we'll come back to that. You know what glycation is? Okay? And actually we're going to talk about when we get to A1C down here in a minute or two or five, okay? We're going to talk about A1C this morning. Now sugar in the skin. You know when they say your skin all wrinkles up, it's the sun? Well, it's not the sun. It starts with an S. It's sugar my friend, because what it does, it glycinates the skin just like it glycates joints. We call that glycation, and I'm going to prove it to you when I talk about your red blood cells in a bit. Okay? I'll get there. I promise.

Sugar in your skin, the best thing you can do for your skin is to lay off the sugar. Now, there's a huge connection. You and I know this again between the gut and the skin, okay? But I'm just talking about aging of the skin. Lay off that sugar and you'll be surprised how much better your collagen and your skin is. Okay? It's amazing. People will talk about that tens of thousands of times, once they've done the reset and they laid off the sugar just for 30 days, it starts making an enormous difference. Okay? Sugar and eyes, get an optometrist, get an ophthalmologist and tell 'em Dr. Martin said, and this is a fact. Sugar in the eyes equals glaucoma. Sugar in the eyes equals cataracts.

Now remember, here's the point I want to make. In behind your eyeballs, okay, are highways. Pretend you're going to Toronto. The 407, the 401, the 403, the 404, okay? You know those highways around Toronto? And if you're in Florida, highway 95, all those main highways, think of a big city with all the highways around it. Got it? That's your eyes. Now, what destroys blood vessels faster than anything else? Sugar. Sugar and capillaries. The little connecting roots. Your rural roots. I like that connection between those major highways. Your arteries and veins are called your capillaries. Oh, sugar is so destructive to little microcirculation capillaries, your eyes. Why do we see so much glaucoma? Why do we see so much cataracts? Why do we see so much diabetic retinopathy? Why? Why, why, why? Sugar, sugar, sugar, eye problems.

Number six, sugar in cells. Hello, sugar in cells, cancer. Cancer cells need sugar. It's their primary fuel. They love sugar. They feed on sugar. And I know medicine wants to talk to you about moderation, medicine and the big food and the big pharma will tell you, yeah, maybe cut back a bit, but you don't worry about, that's not cancer. Cancer's genetic. Cancer comes from the moon, I'm telling you. And it's something that is as obvious as a PET scan, okay? As obvious as a PET scan, not for your pets. A pet scan's not for your pets. Your PET scan is for a cancer detection. It's imaging for cancer. It only works if you feed the patient sugar. It only works, well hello? Hello?

And here we are. We have an establishment, medical establishment, and they won't acknowledge that. I told you this story about an oncologist calling me one day. "Dr. Martin, why do you tell my patients to stop having Ensure?" I said, well, Ensure is going to ensure that cancer grows. Well, what about Boost? Well, I'm just going to boost their cancer. What? Well, I said, do we have PET scan technology in Sudbury? Yes. Well, how does it work? I don't know. This is years ago. Well, they give them sugar, glucose, either IV or they make 'em drink it. And if they have cancer anywhere from their brain to their toes, you light up like a Christmas tree. I said, I rest my case. I rest my case. I said, that's why I tell your patients not to drink Boost, not to drink Ensure, not to drink anything like that. It's crap. Your cancer cells are going hip, hip horray.

Number seven, sugar in the blood, diabetes. Now we all know that, right? If sugar's in the blood. Everything you own in your body. Hello? You out there I'm talking. Everything you own in your body tries to keep your blood sugar down. Your body is so smart. It says, I can't have sugar in my bloodstream. An incy wincy little wee bit. That's it. So your body is so fearfully and wonderfully made. It's so stinking smart. It's smarter than the pharmaceutical industry. It's smarter than the medical industry. It's smarter than the average bear. Your body. And it says to itself, I cannot have sugar in my bloodstream. Why? Sugar is toxic, left unattended, sugar is destructive. Your body knows. We think we're smart. Moderation, sugar's all right? You need sugar. Your brain needs sugar. You know how many millions of times I've heard that? "Ah Dr. Martin, your brain needs it, don't it?" I said, no, it don't. No it don't. If your brain needed sugar, it'll take a piece of steak and make some. That's how smart your body is. It's unreal. Sugar in the blood, we all agree is diabetes, left unattended.

And by the way, sugar in the blood, I'll explain this at the end before you get to diabetes, you're in deep doo doo way before that because your body, like I said, everything you own in your body says let's get your blood sugar down. I mean, you need elevated blood sugar temporarily when you wake up in the morning and all that. But get that out of your brain for a minute, okay? I don't want anybody coming after me because saying that you're a growth hormone and all this, and I know, I know, I know all that. Okay? I'm talking about you want that sugar out of your bloodstream rapidly, and that's what insulin does. Okay? We all know that.

And then the last one, I'm just going to finish with this and then I'm going to get to some teaching on the A1C. Sugar in the joints. If you get an orthopedic surgeon that looks at a joint in surgery and they say, man, that joint looks like it's been carmelized. It's actually a term used. That is similar to the skin in glycation. We call it A G E S, okay? Advance glycation end products. Your joints deteriorate faster with sugar. And today, I mean every second senior you talk to is having hip replacements. Look, if you've had an injury, I get it, okay? You're an old football player, okay? Your joint, but one thing on its way to going bone on bone is glycation. Look, it's not everything, but you cut that sugar out. It's amazing what happens inside that joint. Okay?

Now we're going to talk about A1C. This is the way that I like the best in terms of testing A1C. Okay? What is A1C? A1C is an average of your blood sugar over three months. And the reason is, okay, the reason is this. Let me give you this. Sugar, again, A1C is measured. Listen to what I'm going to say. A1C much better than your blood glucose. Okay? You want to do your blood glucose, I don't care. Go for it. But the best reading is A1C. Why is that? Because sugar destroys your red blood cells. They attach onto it, they glycate it. Remember the word glycation? Glycation here in your skin, glycation in your joints, and glycation in your red blood cells. Sugar is so destructive that you can measure it because it latches on to your red blood cells. Do you need red blood cells? Yeah, your red blood cells bring you all your oxygen, okay?

They're oxygen trucks on the highways of your blood vessels bringing you oxygen every time you breathe. You got hemoglobin, Velcro inside your red blood cell that attaches to oxygen and brings it to your tissue. From your brain to your toes. Can you live without oxygen? Nope. Not long. And then you know what your red blood cells are? They're really important, you know that? On the way back, after they delivered those trucks, they become waste management trucks. They're green. They're green trucks because they're bringing all your waste out of your body. Aren't they smart those red blood cells? But one of the things and doctors, oh, I want to grab them by the throat. Would you do the A1C test? I know you're focused in on glucose, but I'm more focused in on the three month average and the damage done to red blood cells.

So let's go over this. This is key, 4 to 5.4 normal. Now I even like it less than 5.4. Your A1C three month average of sugar monitored by your red blood cells. Got it? Four to 5.4. That's normal. Like I said, even lower better. Some have said in terms of research, 4.7 and below is what they shoot for, but I don't want to make it too difficult. Four to 5.4 normal. When I see anything above that, you'll see. If you send me your blood work, I tell you that you have pre-diabetes, which is insulin resistance. What is that telling you? You and carbs don't get along. You're on the Titanic, you're on the road to diabetes. You're prediabetic if it's over 5.4. "Oh my doctor," I don't care what your doctor said. Your doctor needs to take nutrition 1 0 1 again. No, they never took it in the first place.

If your A1C, your glycated red blood cells are over 5.4, you're on the Titanic and that goes right to 6.5, the Titanic. Change course, change your diet. Now, 6.5 and up even in medicine is considered diabetes. You're a diabetic. And guys, this is the last thing. You see what I wrote here, wrote the last thing that happens, the last thing, that diabetes is the last thing that happens because again, your body is so smart, it will do everything to keep you away from diabetes. This my friend, ought to be taught in medical schools. It should be taught to dieticians. It should be taught to every stinking guru in natural medicine. Sugar is destructive my friend. Sugar is eight times more addictive than cocaine.

I'm going to post this on our Facebook group, okay? After I will. I'll post it. I'll take a picture of it and I'll post it. Did you have fun this morning? Okay, guys, I run into people all the time that tell me they watch our program all the time. You know what? We really appreciate that. You have no idea, okay? You have no idea how much we appreciate our audience. We do. We do. We do. We do. Okay. Can I tell you, you need to get people the copy of our book, Sun Steak & Steel and Sleep. What a great book. Well, I think it's a great book. I do. And again, thank you for making it the number one health book in Canada. Let's make it the number one health book in the US of A. Let's do that. Okay, guys, have I told you lately that I loved you? Not since Friday. Okay, well, I do. And I mean it, talk to you soon.
