Back in 1900, your risk of being diagnosed with any type of cancer was 1 in 30 people. By 1990, that number had jumped to 1 in 5. In 2000, the number is now 1 in 2 people will get cancer.
These statistics are quite frightening. Why has cancer surged so much in the last century? Dr. Martin attributes it to changes in our food, and particularly with the introduction of high fructose corn syrup. Cancer cells feed on sugar, and fructose provides the perfect storm for cancer to flourish.

Dr. Martin: Well, good morning everyone. Hope you're having a wonderful start to your day, and we sure appreciate you guys and thank you for coming on. Thank you for making this live nothing but fun, and then of course, turning these into podcasts and we appreciate the support and we appreciate our audience. Okay, so guys, let me read some frightening statistics. Frightening statistics, and we're going to show one of the reasons this morning that this happened. There are more than one, but I want to bring these risks of being diagnosed with cancer. In 1900, your risk of being diagnosed with any type of cancer was 1 in 30 people. Okay? That was in the year 1900, and 90 years later by the year 1990, it was 1 out of 5. Went from 1 out of 30 to 1 out of 5. In 1995, just five years later, it went to 1 out of 4. In the year 2000, your risk of being diagnosed with cancer the year 2000. So a hundred years later, it's 1 out of 2, 1 out 2. What happened?
And we talk about this almost on a daily basis. What happened? Well, things changed some things for the better, but not all. Okay? Not all. And in food, they changed from 1900. They changed the flour. They changed the fat to industrialized oil. They changed the sugar and the amount of sugar from, nevermind at 1900, but in the 1950s, people were consuming 25 pounds of sugar a year. And where we are today, it's 200 pounds of sugar a year. Now, today I want to talk to you about, I'll give you an overarching principle, then we're going to talk about fructose. Okay? What we found out in cancer cells is that cancer cells, what do we know? They feed on sugar. We know that. And that's not in dispute. They feed on sugar. They're ravenous.
In the early 1900s, people were saying that, that cancer cells were ravenous. There was a book written ravenous, meaning those cancer cells were looking for sugar. But here's another thing. Cancer cells have docking stations and cancer cells have 7 to 10 times more docking stations for insulin. Okay? Now we all know what insulin is. It's a hormone released from your pancreas, and it can become a real horror-mone, especially when we're consuming the amount of sugars that we consume. So one out of two 50% of the folks, will get a diagnosis of cancer in their lifetime. Guys, that's not good. And we're not winning the war on cancer. That would be a beat down, wouldn't it? When you say you lose, you know, ever play sports and you got beat? Well, how about you got a whippin? And it's amazing to me that the cancer industry, they want to be applauded. Are you kidding me? We're losing the war. We're getting beat. It's a disaster. What we're doing ain't working. Maybe we should try something else. Good luck with that. Good luck with that.
Now, I want to bring you, we're going to go over this. We're going to talk about a very specific sugar, one that we've talked about many, many a time, but it's different. I call it in my book, the Metabolic Reset. And in my book, Sun, Steak and Steel, I talk about the antichrist of sugars. And I mean it, and guys, since the early 1980s, I have been screaming. I actually got a letter back, this is years ago, and from the High Fructose Corn Syrup Association, they actually have an association. And they said Dr. Martin, you're all wrong about high fructose corn syrup because it's actually good for you. There's a lot of benefits to them. And of course, that gave me a migraine. They didn't know what they were talking about. Or if they did, they were lying about it. Remember in 1984, Pepsi and Coca-Cola, they switched sugars. Now, remember, Pepsi and Coca-Cola, they own a lot of things. Not only their sodas, they own a lot of the food industry. So when they switched sugars in their colas, they were switching sugars everywhere else and they went from glucose to fructose.
Now the sound of that, it sounds good. High fructose, okay? Corn syrup. Now, I've always told you the worst thing you can do is drink fructose. The worst thing you can do is drink it. You're meant to eat fructose. So when you eat an orange, there's fructose in there. That's all right. It won't kill you. Don't live on fruit. They're God's candies. But fructose, when you eat, it ain't going to kill you. Now, if you're a diabetic or whatever, you got to be very careful because fructose, okay, what's the difference between fructose and glucose? Fruit sugar. Well, a couple of things. One, and this is one of the reasons that they wrote me that letter, because I had publicly in those days, I had a radio show, whatever I was denouncing, the high fructose corn syrup, and they didn't like that.
But one of the things they said is, well, Dr. Martin, you know that fructose doesn't elevate insulin, not like glucose does. Yeah, I'm well aware of that. However, however, fructose, high fructose corn syrup doesn't elevate your insulin like glucose does, but it really elevates your insulin resistance more than glucose does. Glucose will elevate your blood sugars, okay? Fructose does too, but it doesn't elevate insulin near as much, but it really magnifies insulin resistance. So your cells when confronted by high fructose corn syrup develop resistance to insulin. We talk about that all the time.
Okay, now let me keep going here. High fructose corn syrup, okay? Elevates insulin resistance more than anything else, okay? And two, it doesn't go through the same metabolism as glucose does. High fructose corn syrup doesn't get metabolized broken down like glucose. It misses a step and it's like, guys, the best way to describe it is like alcohol. What does alcohol do? Well, alcohol loves your liver. True or false? Yeah, it does. Okay? Alcohol, it takes a rocket ship to your liver and so does high fructose corn syrup, and that's what I used to be screaming about, okay? It doesn't get metabolized like glucose. Now, nobody's telling you to live on glucose either, but fructose goes through your liver and especially if you drink it.
Now, let me say the word again, high fructose, okay? Corn, okay, syrup. See, it's crystallized, but it's a liquid. It's a liquid, and it makes a beeline for your liver. Okay? Now what that does, what happens in the liver doesn't stay in the liver, right? What happens with high fructose corn syrup when it goes to your liver? It creates lots of triglycerides, three fat balls, okay? That happens in the liver. That's not good guys. Remember triglycerides, okay? Everybody makes triglycerides, everybody. But when you elevate triglycerides, when you consume high fructose corn syrup, and listen, high fructose corn syrup is the antichrist of sugars. The reason I said it is because you have triglycerides being formed that is very, very dangerous when it comes to cardiac.
Here's what happens, food wise. Kids, imagine we would've never thought kids could ever have trouble with their liver. Are you kidding me? You'd have told me that in the 1970s, I wouldn't have believed it. I mean it, that kids can create high triglycerides. Come on. How can that happen? How can that happen? But because of high fructose corn syrup that gets metabolized in the liver, the byproduct of that is high triglycerides, which are fat balls and very dangerous. Now, in the same way, kids, adults, whatever, when they love their fructose, they love soda, they love orange juice or apple juice or even things that are in the middle aisles of their grocery store from crappy dinner to cereals, they use high fructose corn syrup. Frosted flakes are not great. Even if Tony the Tiger says they're great, they're not. High fructose corn syrup. Syrup, it goes to the liver. It packs on fat.
When the liver is full, make triglycerides and the triglycerides are sent into the bloodstream and these same people, and it's a double whammo. They don't eat from the animal kingdom like they should. They don't get enough cholesterol and cholesterol, guys, listen to me. Listen, Linda, listen. Cholesterol is out to save your bacon. What do you mean by that Dr. Martin? Well, cholesterol's on your side. Cholesterol has been made to be a bad guy, but it's a good guy. Cholesterol is meant to go grab those triglycerides and hitch their wagon in your bloodstream and take them back to the liver to be metabolized. But here we are. We have a society today that is hooked on high fructose corn syrup. They're making fatty liver like there's no tomorrow, and then we don't consume our portion of cholesterol. 85% of your cholesterol is made in your liver. God does it. You have nothing to do with it because God is smarter than we are. We need cholesterol.
And you're supposed to chip in 15% of it, 85% God, 15% cooperate with God and eat from the animal kingdom, and we don't get enough cholesterol. So what happens? Dangerous triglycerides and low H D L. When you send me your blood work, I don't care what your total cholesterol is, I don't. You can't make me care. I care about what your triglycerides are at, and I care about your H D L. Even your L D L, I care, better be high, better be high, or you're in deep doo doo, heart and brain. What happens in the liver doesn't stay in the liver. It's not Vegas. So that's sugar. Why did I call it the antichrist of sugars? It's a terrible sweetener, terrible. There's nothing like it.
And I had someone the other day, I think it was on our private... Well, it's better to drink a soda with real sugar in it than the artificial stuff. No, it's not. Not that I'm telling you to drink artificial sugars, but there's nothing like high fructose corn syrup. It's the worst of the worst, and it has brought disaster to our society. Okay? Disaster. Okay. Now, when you have insulin resistance, one of the things that gets affected too, and this is high fructose corn syrup, another whammy. It decreases your leptin. What is leptin? Leptin is really the opposite of insulin. Insulin resistance will make you hungry because your sugars are fluctuating. Leptin, which tells you you're full, doesn't work. You get leptin resistance too with high fructose corn syrup. Now you're wanting to eat all the time, okay?
So it drives fatty liver, it drives your triglycerides, it lowers your cholesterol. And remember your liver when it's getting packed up with fat, you're not producing near as much glutathione. You're producing way too much C R P, which is C-reactive protein because that gets done in the liver. Guys, this is disaster as inflammation. We know it's not Houdini, but if you have insulin resistance, inflammation. If you have fatty liver at all, and the Costco parking lot is getting packed up, you're creating inflammation. It's silent. Your C R P goes up, that starts destroying blood vessels, nerves, and cancer starts. Inflammation is a factor in every cancer. It lowers.
Here's another factor, it lowers your nitric oxide. Why? Because what high fructose corn syrup does, it elevates uric acid. Why do we see so much gout? High fructose corn syrup. I've told you that a million times. People have a hard time believing me because if they Google gout, they're told not to eat red meat. But Google's changing that a little bit because I've seen a couple of sites where they said, yeah, well, you know what? It seems to be related to insulin. Hello? Hello? Yes, but they're still poo-pooing red meat. Red meat, it's so bad. It gives you uric acid. No, it doesn't. High fructose corn syrup elevates your uric acid. And a lot of people have high uric acid levels without gout. Gout is possible, but it's not even that. You become uric acid. It creates acidity. It's very, very high. Uric acid is hard on your kidneys.
So kidney stones, yeah, and you might get gout, but most people don't even get gout with high uric acid, but they get a lot of inflammation damaging to kidneys. Uric acid lowers your nitric oxide. What does nitric oxide do? Opens up blood vessels. Nitric oxide's important for your immune system too. Well, high fructose corn syrup. Do you think when they invented that, okay, it was invented. Okay, it was made in a lab. It's not like they went and found it. Oh, here's high fructose corn syrup. We picked it off a plant. No, they take corn in the lab and they took the syrup out of it and they made a sugar, a sweetener. Terrible stuff. Okay? This is really important when it comes to aging and when it comes to cancer.
Glucose, I've said this to you many a times. What is a word that I like to use? Glycation. Glycation is a form of oxidation. Okay? We all know what oxidation is. It's aging, right? We're rusting out. Glycation, okay? It's called A G E apostrophe S, okay? It's a byproduct of sugar, but when the sugar or the sweetener is high fructose corn syrup, glycation is increased 10 times. Why do I love the Reset guys? It gets you off all that. And when you're not consuming any high fructose corn syrup, your glycation goes down. That's better for your skin. We're all going to age. We're all going to age, but you won't age as rapidly. Glycation is very hard on skin and collagen. It's very hard on your joints.
Orthopedic surgeons have said when they look at a joint, okay, I've had orthopedic surgeons tell me when they look at a joint, oftentimes they see that it's been caramelized, okay? And meaning that it's worn out in a different way. It's not just bone on bone, but the bone is deteriorated, and we're getting that. I feel sorry for young people today that have been duped, that red meat is bad, but you can have the carbs. You need carbs to live. No, you don't. And then plus, they're not talking fruits and vegetables eating. They're drinking. When I see people lined up at Starbucks, Tim Hortons, you name the place and they got these sugary drinks. It's a candy bar on steroids. I want to scream. Here I am going for a coffee. And what do they do? They're going for these sugary drinks with high fructose corn syrup in it. Ah, they're killing themselves. They're aging themselves. Cancer, they don't know. They haven't been told.
And glycation is premature aging. What do you think cancer is? You ever seen a cancer patient in their advanced cancer? And I mean, you don't have to be a rocket scientist to figure out what they got. You go, ooh, right, you don't look good. Nah, very. Yeah. I mean, come on. And guys, what is that? It's free radical damage on steroids and glycation on steroids, 10 times more glycation with high fructose corn syrup than ordinary sugar. Why do I call it the antichrist of sugars? I'll tell you, I used to tell my patients this. When you do the reset, you've got horror-mones ladies and gentlemen, but ladies, mostly, you're much more susceptible to cancer. You got more moving parts than a man does. You're much more susceptible to it.
And what are the growth factors? And I'm not saying men can't get this dude, but I used to tell 'em, look, you need to cut out those crappy carbs because they have the bad sweetener, high fructose corn syrup? Stop drinking anything other than water and coffee. Okay, you can have a cup of tea. Stop drinking that stuff. Don't go to Starbucks and get a cappuccino or whatever you call it. Stop and no more fruit smoothies. No. You can have Dr. Martin's perfect smoothie with a little bit of berries in it, but you don't go get a fruit smoothie. Why do you think Steve Jobs died from pancreatic cancer? I tell you, this is the reason we got so much pancreatic cancer today. Pancreatic cancer, when I was in school in the 1970s was first of all, just about unheard of. And second of all, it was old men that would get a pancreatic cancer. Not anymore. Not anymore. Why? Here we are, one out of two 50% and let's give more money to the cancer societies. Why? What are they doing? They're not talking about food. They're not telling you what to do.
And then lastly, guys, lastly with the high fructose corn syrup, what makes it so bad? It's full of mercury. You know what they always don't blame the fish for what high fructose corn syrup did. That's what I used to tell my patients. Don't blame fish. Oh, Dr. Martin, I don't eat fish because there could be mercury in it. Don't blame fish for what the sugar did. True or false? If you did a survey and you said in the survey, how do you get mercury? How would anybody get mercury in their body? They'd say, fish. They wouldn't say high fructose corn syrup because they lied and people died. Mercury, high fructose corn syrup. You think that stuff's good for anybody? Nah, it's not.
Okay, that was tough sledding guys. From heart disease to aging to cancer to heavy metal, like heavy metal is a factor in Alzheimer's. It's not the primary thing, but it's a factor in Parkinson's, MS. Anything neurological mercury is so dangerous. It's not the fish guys. Anyway, I'm telling you. Okay. Okay, I got to breathe.
