What is Leaky Gut Syndrome?
The Ultimate Guide For 2019
Did you know the majority of people that have Leaky Gut Syndrome have NO digestive symptoms at all?
It’s true!
Which is why if you’re looking for the ultimate guide to leaky gut syndrome, and how to heal the gut...this article is for you.
…first, let me get straight to the point of this article.
What is Leaky Gut Syndrome?
The bullet point version is…
• It’s a disease where the stuff in your gut from the food you've eaten leaks into your blood.
• Toxins that normally gets filtered out end up in your bloodstream. Then travel throughout your body causing a multitude of health problems.
• It’s among one of the big 3 causes of low grade inflammation which is ultimately found in every disease such as heart disease, cancer, and Alzheimer’s.
What about the longer explanation?
It’s all comes down to special cells in your gut called “Tight Junctions” that suddenly stop working properly.
What happens is your gut is separated from the rest of your body by a single layer of specialized epithelial cells that are linked together by something called “tight junctions”.
“Tight junctions” act like a bouncer in a club between your gut and your bloodstream. They let the good stuff in from the food you eat, while simultaneously keeping the toxins out.
In other words they control what is allowed to pass into your bloodstream from your digestive system.
When they stop working properly (due to a few causes I'll tell you about later), what happens next is disease-causing compounds that should never be able to enter your bloodstream start to travel throughout every organ in your body.
That's what leaky gut is.
Now…What causes your gut to leak?
Here’s the top 7 most common causes:
1. TAKING ANTIBIOTICS
Taking antibiotics anytime in your life causes a problem called “dysbiosis”, which means an imbalance between the good and bad bacteria in your gut.
What happens here is antibiotics act like a “nuclear bomb” when it comes to helping you get rid of a bad bacterial infection.
They are a life saver when you're sick…but their benefits come at a steep price. The price is antibiotics don’t just kill bad bacteria making you sick…
They also kill the good bacteria keeping your gut microbiome healthy. (Your gut microbiome is your gut environment).
Now, the good news is that after taking antibiotics your good bacteria will come back slowly.
But the bad news is bad bacteria like candida tends to grow back much faster.
When bad bacteria grows back faster than good bacteria it takes over your gut, and that change to your gut microbiome often causes leaky gut syndrome.
2. HIGH CORTISOL LEVELS
Another factor that causes leaky gut syndrome is high cortisol levels caused by too much stress.
Stress is a massive, massive cause of increased permeability aka leaky gut.
A bad diet, physical exertion, and mental trauma are all perceived by your body as stress which is why so many of us have sky high cortisol levels today.
When you are under stress your body produces cortisol, which helps you get ready to fight or flight by increasing your blood sugar levels to give you more energy.
Which is great if you're in a dangerous situation, but terrible if you're sitting on the coach stressed out about bills.
This causes leaky gut because one of the things that happens when you're secreting cortisol over a long period of time is — gut inflammation.
Inflammation irritates your gut lining, plus “tight junction” cells which increase the leakiness of your gut.
3. AGING
Most articles that talk about leaky gut don’t mention aging as a cause. Which is silly in my opinion. Because it's a major cause of leaky gut.
It’s an unpopular truth, but there's a reason most of the people that come into our clinic are over the age of 27.
And the reason is the natural aging process causes our bodies to start breaking down, which makes us less resistant to the lifestyle choices we make, stress, and the environmental pollution we’re exposed to each day.
For example I developed leaky gut in my 20’s from a food allergy I did not have when I was younger.
4. OVER THE COUNTER PAIN MEDS
Those tiny pills you take for your aches and pains also have the nasty side effect of causing leaky gut syndrome. Similar to antibiotics these medications hurt your good bacteria causing bad bacteria like candida to take over.
5. POOR DIET AND FOOD ALLERGIES
I hinted to this one earlier. The reality is the foods we eat everyday can also increase the permeability of our guts and cause them to leak.
For example food sweeteners like Splenda can kill your good bacteria and cause “dysbiosis” which leads to leaky gut.
Other foods that can cause problems include sugar, GMOs, alcohol consumption, foods you're allergic to, and dairy products.
Personally, for me it was eggs.
Which is a shame because I really loved eggs.
6. ENVIRONMENTAL TOXINS
We come into contact with dozens of environmental chemicals and toxins every single day including antibiotics in the meat we eat, pesticides from fruit, chlorine and fluoride in our tap water, and much more.
These environmental pollutants wreck havoc on our bodies and can cause a multitude of diseases including leaky gut.
7. GENETIC PREDISPOSITION
While not my go to cause for leaky gut, it's worth mentioning that some people are unfortunately predisposed to developing leaky gut because of genetic factors.
This is often the case when leaky gut syndrome shows up in younger individuals.
Sounds like I may have leaky gut, how can I tell for sure?
While there are tests you can take to confirm if you have leaky gut a simply, quick, and easy way is to see if you have any of the following leaky gut symptoms:
1. DIGESTIVE ISSUES OF ANY KIND
In our clinic I can’t recall a single case of a patient coming in with digestive problems such as IBS, or candida overgrowth that were not caused by leaky gut.
If you have any chronic digestive problems you can feel confident that you most likely have leaky gut and can move forward to the section on how to repair it.
However, remember in the beginning when I said the majority of people that have leaky gut syndrome have NO digestive symptoms at all?
Well, your body gives you clues that your gut isn’t healthy even if you have no digestive symptoms.
What's described next are 4 hidden leaky gut symptoms that have nothing to do with digestive issues…but strongly suggest you have a leaky gut problem.
The 4 hidden symptoms of Leaky Gut Syndrome
1. SKIN PROBLEMS AFTER PUBERTY
Your skin is your largest organ AND it’s strongly connected to your gut. It’s safe to say that if you have any skin condition at all after puberty then you also have Leaky Gut Syndrome.
If you have psoriasis, eczema, hives or adult acne then most likely you also have Leaky Gut Syndrome.
2. JOINT PAIN
Did you know that there’s a connection between your gut and the health of your joints?
If you have joint pain and it isn’t from an old injury or excessive wear and tear, there’s a good chance that it’s caused by leaky gut.
Leaky gut causes chronic inflammation which we feel as pain, and can cause autoimmune disorders that force your body to attack your own joints.
3. BRAIN PROBLEMS
“Leaky Gut, Leaky Brain” is a saying that I use all the time in my clinic. If your gut isn’t healthy then your brain won’t be healthy either. Why?
Research has shown that your good bacteria actually plugs the holes and forms part of the barrier in your blood-brain barrier.
When you have Leaky Gut Syndrome and you are overrun by bad bacteria, your brain is at risk of being attacked by fungus, toxins, bacteria and other junk.
An unhealthy gut puts you at risk for dementia, Alzheimer’s, and Parkinson’s.
4. ESTROGEN DOMINANCE
While this hidden symptom mostly effects women it can also affect men.
When your gut isn’t healthy, it’s impossible for your body to have a normal metabolism or balanced hormones…especially when it comes to the hormone estrogen.
What happens is your gut bacteria contain specific estrogen metabolizing microbes called the estrobolome.
When you have leaky gut, your ability to balance estrogen decreases because you lose access to estrobolome.
When that happens it puts you at risk for obesity, cardiovascular disease and osteoporosis.
If you have estrogen dominance symptoms such as weight gain around your hips and abdomen, mood swings, fatigue, cold hands and feet, hair loss, bloating, or headaches…
Then there’s a good chance you have Leaky Gut Syndrome as well.
Ok, I think I have leaky gut how dangerous is it to ignore it?
A lot of folks were taught early on to “push through the pain”…which may lead some to wonder just how dangerous is ignoring leaky gut syndrome…if you have it?
Well, consider this before you tough it out.
Now, while the word “leaky” often conjures up an image of something not so serious…when it comes to your gut any leaking can cause life threatening illness over time.
Leaky gut syndrome is often the FIRST step towards terrifying diseases such as Alzheimer’s, Heart Disease, Cancer, and more.
The reason it can “downward spiral” into these diseases is because when your gut leaks an “oil spill” of toxins pour into your bloodstream. Which immediately causes chronic inflammation.
Which is terrible for your body because chronic inflammation is the root of all diseases. Ignoring leaky gut syndrome is almost like signing up for the “give me all the diseases package” if such a thing existed.
Lifelong untreated leaky gut disease can downward spiral into:
Parkinson’s disease
Multiple sclerosis
Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS)
Crohn’s
Ulcerative colitis
Celiac disease
Thyroid disorders
Esophageal and colorectal cancer
…And many more diseases.
Ok, that sounds horrible how can I fix my leaky gut?
The good news is leaky gut is fixable.
However, most people find repairing leaky gut a bit tricky because there is no prescription medication that will help you repair your leaky gut.
On the contrary, both over-the-counter, and prescription medication such as proton-pump inhibitors will actually make your leaky gut worse.
So, what should you do?
What I recommend you do is use our free, 100% all natural protocol for repairing leaky gut called the 3 R protocol. We've used it to help patients conquer this disease for over 30 years.
It uses a specific combination of leaky gut foods to avoid, gut healing foods, and supplements designed to help you quickly heal your leaky gut at home without having to pay to visit us in person.

P.S. How long does it take to heal leaky gut?
The honest answer is it depends on how long your gut has been leaking. Using our 3 R protocol we’ve seen patients fully recover within 12 weeks. Feeling much better 3 weeks in.
While with other patients that have been suffering leaky gut disease for a long time it can take 12 full months to fully repair their gut.
P.P.S. Please don't be intimidated by the name “3 R Protocol”. It's actually quite simple to follow. The 3 R’s stand for reduce, remove, and rebuild.
What the protocol entails is removing certain toxins from your diet, while simultaneously adding beneficial supplements to your diet in order to rebuild your gut and remove the junk hurting you.
A lot of people are afraid of making diet changes or outright refuse to make them.
However, even if that describes you I believe you'll still find it very beneficial to download our 3 R Protocol because the supplements, and gut healing foods outlined in the protocol are easy for anyone to take…
And will greatly improve your leaky gut condition even if you're unwilling to make diet changes.
There are a lot of health supplement companies to choose from. But here’s the #1 reason you should choose us. Most other supplement companies never meet their customers. If their stuff doesn’t work…it’s no big deal.
Many of them know little about health…and if they do, they’ve never been involved in any form of patient care at all. They’re strictly a supplement company.
We’re different. Our clinic has been around a LONG time (since 1911).
Like many of you, we were frustrated by the lack of results our patients were getting with the other company’s products.
Their supplements either weren’t strong enough or in the wrong form (which made them impossible to absorb).
And since they had no actual experience dealing with patients and their symptoms, their formulas were also lacking key nutrients.
So…we made our own supplements.
What happened next blew us away.
People from all over the world who couldn’t visit us in person, starting calling our northern Ontario clinic for help with fatigue, hormones, digestion, pain, autoimmune, heart, and every other symptom imaginable. And after a lot of calls…
We knew what we needed to no next.
We had to make our formulas available online to everyone who couldn’t travel to see us in person.
At MARTIN CLINIC, every formula was created using our long history of patient care. We knew what worked…and what didn’t.
