In this second part of Dr. Martin’s series on the Super Bowl, he looks at offense and how to score points for your overall health.

What can you do offensively that's really gonna help you? Dr. Martin says you need to start with food. There’s nothing that will affect your body more than food. Food is fuel, and when you choose nutrient, protein, or fat dense foods, you’re giving your body the best fuels. Eggs, meat and cheese are the perfect examples!

Dr. Martin:  Well, good afternoon everyone, and once again, welcome to another live PM edition. Okay guys, let's get going. Yesterday we talked about the Super Bowl. Okay? Yesterday we went on defense. Okay? The best teams in the NFL, they have both. They have great defenses and great offenses, and you don't have a good offense without a good part of it, right? So even if you know nothing about football and you know that, yeah, that's who usually wins the super. You know, even to get to the Super Bowl, you gotta have a good offense, then you gotta have a good defense. And when it comes to being healthy, you need to have a good offense and a good defense. And yesterday we spent our time on defense. Okay? I happened to be yesterday, your defensive coordinator. <laugh> If you don't know anything about football, meh, I just went over your head.

But the defensive coordinator is the guy that handles the defense for the NFL teams or the CFL teams, football. And so we talked about defense and yesterday we focus mostly on the four parts of your immune system, okay? We talked about your gut, we talked about your T-cells, your lymphatic system, how your body is unbelievable, guys, fearfully and wonderfully made. We talked about a specific immune system in your brain called your glymphatic system. Not lymphatic, but glymphatic. It's a separate system altogether. And your brain self-cleaning oven immune system works detoxifies only when you're sleeping, okay? That is really important. Sleep is a big part of your defense. And guys, by the way, a lack of sleep will really affect even your T-cells. Your immune system goes down big time with a lack of sleep. Having too much cortisol... If your cortisol is high, you don't sleep as well. If you don't sleep as well, your cortisol is high. I mean you can't win. But high cortisol is sort of a distraction for your immune system.

When you're stressed, well, your body's not thinking about fighting viruses or bacteria. They're thinking of fighting some other human being. <laugh>, you're stressed. The fight or flight, okay? So that is what we call a distraction to the immune system. So defensively, that's where we spent our time. Now, the fourth part of your immune system hardly ever gets talked about are what we call your kupffer cells. They're in your liver, they're a part of your immune system. Your liver does 500 things, probably 600 things. But your kupffer cells are important part because they're part of the production of glutathione. And glutathione is your Velcro, okay? It's Velcro that travels through your system and garbage sticks to it, Velcro, and you detoxify that way. So that is a very complex short version of your immune system, guys, okay? So that's defense.

Today, let's go on offense. Okay, let's go on offense. We wanna score points for your overall health, okay? Offense, defense, let's do a little bit of offense today, okay? What can you do offensively that's really gonna help you? Well, I gotta start with food. I gotta start with the quarterback, all star quarterback, in terms of your health, is food okay? Nothing, and I mean nothing will affect your body more than food. So if you wanna go on the offense to be very, very healthy, you need to start in the kitchen. Okay? And like someone said actually in the grocery store, yeah, yep. Okay? I use the expression of the kitchen because of food choices that you have to make. Okay? And I said this consistently for a long time, you and everybody you know needs to go low carb. Okay?

I'm not saying no carb, I'm not a carnivore, I'm a nutravore. There's a difference. I'm a nutravore. I am into nutrition. I'm not a carnivore. People think they accuse me of that, but I'm not. I never tell anyone unless they're on a 30 day program, which is a temporary program to fix your insulin resistance. Okay? Insulin, my friend, is your quarterback. You're gonna go on offense and he's gonna score touchdown after touchdown after touchdown if you lay off the carbs because there's no defense that can stop you. If you start with food. And if you understand the fundamentals and you guys do the fundamentals of nutrition, nutrition 101, you've got three macros, you've got carbs, you've got protein, and you've got fat. Okay? And you need to change fuels. If you wanna go on offense. The key is to change fuels.

Listen, your body operates unbelievable what happens inside the body. Here I am almost 50 years. Uh, yeah, it is. It's over 50 years in the study of the human body. And I just can't get over. I can't how complex, how dynamic, how precise your body operates. You get a brand new body, you get a brand new gut every two or three days, your cells are regenerated, you get a brand new liver don't take long, you get brand new bones just about every month you get brand new skin cells. Holy moly, get new skin what? Every week, right? Even cells within your eyeballs regenerate very quickly, very quickly. But if you want to win, you have to change fuels. And every cell in your body has batteries. They're called mitochondria. And mitochondria released energy ATP from the food that you eat. And we have an epidemic. I know we use that too much of low energy people and they go, I wonder why? Why am I low in energy? Well, one of the biggest reasons that people are low in energy is the fuel that they fuel their body with. They got the wrong fuel.

Your mitochondria, are looking for slow burning, high octane fuel. Where do you find that? Eggs, meat, cheese. And you can have some fruits, you can have some vegetables, but don't rely on that. Don't rely on that for your energy because that burns too fast. They're paper and twigs. It's 87 gasoline in a jet. A jet needs almost a hundred percent octane. You don't put 87 in there. You put that in your car, but you don't put that in a jet. If you want your body to perform at a higher level, you've gotta give it the right fuel. And when your body absorbs nutrient dense... What do I mean by that? Vitamin dense, mineral dense, protein dense, fat dense food, and your fat soluble vitamins, your body's mitochondria go, thank you. You're giving me the best fuel possible and your body will burn a much better fuel. If you insist on eating carbs and living on carbs, your body will slow down. Your body burns that food way too quickly. You're gonna find yourself hungry all the time. Your mitochondria, yes, they will release energy, but it's not gonna be top notch and you're going to be underperforming in the Super Bowl. Okay?

So is food important? Absolutely it is. Is it that hard to understand? No, not really. When you think about it, it's not that hard to understand. And I know, you know, like I did a conference, uh, this afternoon on Zoom and a lady was on there, this group that I was speaking to, and she said, I'm a vegetarian. I said, I feel sorry for you because she'd been taught that that probably was the best thing for her. But folks, she got taught wrong. It's not the best thing for you. I'm not saying that vegetables are not good for you, I'm not saying that, but you're not getting fuel for your mitochondria. I'm sorry. You get very little. It's not nutrient dense. You want the vitamins, you want the minerals, you want the protein and animal protein especially, and animal fat. Guys, I talk about it on a daily basis. And Lord willing, if I get to talk tomorrow, I'll do it again. If Monday next week and every time I talk about food, if you're waiting for me to change my mind, and it's not even because I'm old, okay? It's because I know it to be true.

You know what was one good thing about being in practice? I love researchers by the way. Okay? Am I a researcher? Eh? Not really. I was a clinician, okay? Not that we don't do research, but I left the research to other people. I wanted to see people. My experience is based on patients. And um, I was a guy. I love to listen to patients. I wanted to hear their story. And I was big into looking at certain numbers on their blood work. Very non-traditional because I was looking for metabolic syndrome. I was looking to see how those mitochondria of yours are working. What would I do to know that? Well, I check insulin, I check A1C, I check triglycerides, I check HDL. Okay? I like uric acid. I like B12, I like vitamin D. You guys know that. I like CRP, C reactive protein. Why do I like those tests? I even like ferritin. I like it because it gives me, it gives me a picture of what I'm looking at when it comes to metabolic syndrome. 93%. It's hard to believe it was at 88. That was hard to believe. 93% of the population by the year 2022 that just gone past us were unwell metabolically. I just named you the test.

We live in a world, you and I we're the vast majority of people. And they don't even know it because they're not even tested proper. You know, medicine, God love them, but they always wait til you're sick. Oh, you're a diabetic. Oh, you're a diabetic. So now let's put you on medication. Oh, you have heart disease, let's put you on medication. Oh, you got cancer. Let's put you on medication. Why wait? Why are we waiting? Now listen, I, you know, it's not like you give up on yourself if you have any of those chronic diseases. And folks, they are lifestyle diseases, okay? They're not genetics. I know your mummy might have had a heart attack. Yeah, well that makes you more susceptible, but you can override that. I know. Listen, look at this face, okay? It's scary. I didn't have to tell you that, right? <laugh>, you guys know it. Scary face. No, but I look like my father, okay? It scares me. I love my dad. Oh, I miss him dearly. Oh, you have no idea. But I look like him. And he was a diabetic. My grandfather was a diabetic. But you can override that. You know, like Tony Jr. says, genetics load the gun, but food will pull the trigger. Yeah, you might have a loaded gun. Police walk around all day with a gun that's loaded. That doesn't mean they're gonna shoot it.

Genetics plays a part, there's no doubt about that. But it can be overridden when you go on defense and when you go on offense. And I'm telling you, my friend, that you cannot be healthy. Don't tell me about your uncle that lived to 102, smokes cigars, ate whatever he felt like and drank like a fish. And he lived till he was 102. Dr. Martin. Well, you know what that is? That's the grace of God that had nothing to do with him or her. It's the grace of God. I am talking in generalities. I'm talking about not the exception, but the rule. And the rule is, if you wanna be healthy and you're a carboholic, I'm sorry you're not healthy, nor will you be. You know, cuz people, okay, I I talk to people all the time, Donna. I didn't know it was gonna be so hard. Well, nothing worthwhile is ever easy. Okay? <laugh> Easy. It's not easy. If you're a carboholic, how can it be easy? It's not easy, but is it worth it?

You see, you know, I get people and uh, I tell 'em, well look, here's what you have to do. I can't go home with you in my practice. You never left my office without a plan. Ever, ever, ever, did you leave my office without a plan. Okay? And I mean it. What made me successful, at least part of it was accountability. You're coming back and we're gonna redo all, all those tests again. And I know I'm going to know if you've cheated, I'm going to know if you've been a good girl or a good boy. "How are you gonna know, doc?" Because I'm gonna do blood work and I'm gonna see where you're at. I'm gonna look and see, is your leaky gut better? Is your inflammation gone down? Is your triglycerides gone down and your HDL gone up? For those that I tested, uric acid or whatever, is it gone down? You're going to get on a program to help all those things. Is it gonna be easy? No. For some it's easier than others. Okay? For some it is easier. They love the fact that they got a plan in front of them, right?

And I don't know if you guys follow football at all, but football probably more than any other sport is all strategy. It's all players, right? And you have the offensive coordinator up there and he's talking to the quarterback usually right in his ear and he's telling them what the next play's gonna be. And then you have the defensive coordinator talking to the defense saying, well this is what I think they're gonna do. Here's what we do to defend and here's how we go on offense, guys. You need a plan. Part of being healthy and winning as a plan, a plan to succeed. I never make it so you can't do it. You can do it. And what I like about our little group is that we're so supportive of each other, right? Have you been on the Martin Clinic Facebook group, <laugh>? We got so many partners there that are so good. So encouraging. It's not easy. It's not easy. If you're on the Titanic, don't worry about the furniture, okay? Start in the kitchen. Start in the kitchen. It'll make a difference in everything. Don't make it complicated. Lower your carbohydrates. And if you wanna do the reset for 30 days, no carbohydrates. None, nada. Give your pancreas a holiday to a Hawaii. Does it work? You better believe it does. And that's why I'm so consistent and constant. Make changes, they're worth it.
