High "normal" blood sugar can still hurt your brain

Research has shown that there is a direct link between diabetes and brain health.  When someone has diabetes, there is a greater chance of their brain shrinking and when this happens it greatly increases the chances of getting dementia or Alzheimer’s.  

However, what is very interesting is that new research is suggesting that even if you have blood sugar levels that are on the high end of “normal” you may be at a greater risk of your brain shrinking.  How many people today are walking around with “normal” blood sugar and yet their brains are suffering as a result.  

We believe that brain shrinkage and neuroinflammation are major causes of many dementias and other brain disorders such as Parkinson’s and Alzheimer’s.  We also believe that this is occurring at an epidemic frequency.  This is a serious problem.  Not only can high “normal” blood sugar levels causes brain problems, but so can a higher body fat percentage.  The fat cell releases hormones that can affect memory.  These hormones can also cause neuroinflammation which can lead to a host of issues.  This is another of many reasons why it is vital to have a normal body fat percentage.

Now that we know that our brain shrinks with even high “normal” blood sugar levels, is there anything we can do about it?  The answer to that question is ABSOLUTELY.  This is where Omega-3’s come in.  Omega 3’s are a family of fats that occur naturally.  Omega 3’s are very important for our health.  Out of all the Omega 3’s, Docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) is the most important for your brain.  Brain cells use Omega 3’s, in particular DHA to build their cell walls and our body is no good at making them on their own.  We need Omega 3’s and DHA every single day.  Also, Omega 3’s are essential for the communication between brain cells.  Studies have shown that low Omega 3 causes a communication breakdown in the brain.  Just like every machine out there, your brain needs oil to function.

What is shocking is that studies have shown that people with low Omega 3 have smaller brains compared to those who have higher Omega 3 levels.  Here is a list of other symptoms and diseases that have can occur with low Omega 3 levels, in particular low DHA.  Memory loss, depression, bipolar disorders, ADD, ADHD, Schizophrenia, Autism and Alzheimer’s disease.
