Are you getting enough Vitamin D?
I have talked a lot about Vitamin D over the last few weeks. At this point it should be clear that absolutely everyone should be supplementing with vitamin D. It really doesn’t matter what condition you may have, there is no question that you would benefit from optimizing your blood levels of vitamin D. Even if you are healthy, there is plenty of research suggesting that maintaining healthy vitamin D levels will make sure that you stay that way.
Now, probably the number one reason why we strongly recommend vitamin D has to do with it’s ability to inhibit inflammation. We are functional health care practitioners at the Martin Clinic. This means that we mostly work in the area between health and disease. One of the first major event that occurs when someone moves from health and steps on the path to disease is inflammation. This is why we do a lot in our clinic to determine the level of inflammation of a patient. Between our biomarker testing and thermography scanning, we try to get an understanding of how much inflammation a person may have.
There are a lot of things that can trigger inflammation. Chemicals are a big reason why we are constantly producing inflammation. I put up an article on our Facebook page last week that talked about how for the first time, almost 75% of people tested had a flame retardant in their urine. It most likely got there, not from eating chemical-laced food, but from sitting on sofas and walking barefoot on carpets. The point is simple, we are surrounded by chemicals.
However, chemicals are not the only source of inflammation. A majority of people develop from inflammation from a messed up hormonal system. When we are stressed, we eventually make inflammation due to elevated cortisol. Last week, I mentioned that a study found that diabetic men with lower testosterone were more likely to develop heart disease. Part of the problem was that low testosterone levels caused an increase in inflammation.
A big part of our approach to healthcare is dealing with inflammation. This is where, along with other supplements and dietary changes, vitamin D comes into play.
Research has shown that low levels of vitamin D resulted in the inability of a person to stop the chain of events that leads to inflammation. This is huge. As I’ve mentioned, we will come into contact with chemicals, even if we eat only organic or GMO-free foods. If you are low in vitamin D, you will be more likely to develop inflammation as a result. As someone has already said, if vitamin D was a patented drug, it would be hailed as the greatest, most important thing you could take for your health. However, since it is not a drug, nor is it patented, we are left with people being told to “watch out” if they take more than 1000iu per day.
